The cast of The Romanoffs talks the first two installments in the anthology series.
Matthew Weiner’s long-awaited follow-up to Mad Men, The Romanoffs, is finally streaming on Amazon. The pricey project–estimated to cost upwards of $50 million for eight episodes–is an ambitious, globe-spanning anthology series that follows descendents of the Russian royal family, The Romanovs. The spelling of the titled is intentional, meant to reflect the pronunciation and how it was spelled up until recently.
Amazon released episode one and two on Oct. 12 (you can read our review here), with subsequent episodes releasing every Friday thereafter. Each episode is a self-contained story with the look and feel of an indie film. As he did with Mad Men, Weiner included a long list of spoilers that critics are not allowed to share. So to preview episodes one and two, we spoke to the cast to understand...

Streaming dramas are often tricky to recap, as much for their flaws as for the fact that all the episodes drop at once. The Romanoffs, however — Matthew Weiner’s new anthology series about people who believe they’re descended from Russian royalty — is a special case in a couple of ways. First, Weiner convinced Amazon to release one episode a week (except for this premiere week, which will feature two: “The Violet Hour” and “The Royal We”). Second, while the new show’s problems are many — starting with early installments...

Amazon's anthology series from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner comes up short of its royal ambitions.
Amazon is planning on spending $8 billion on original content this year, a billion more than rival Netflix. The two streaming giants are in an arms race, each sweeping up reliable TV content creators like Shonda Rhimes, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Ryan Murphy to bolster libraries already bursting with titles. The guiding philosophy here seems to be that if you have the means, you might as well shell out. It’s a win-win for both the platforms and the artists; Netflix and Amazon get the highly anticipated new works from some of television’s brightest minds and the creators get to execute their vision with little to no creative or budgetary oversight. The only party that may end up losing is the viewer, now more likely to suffer through self-indulgent series when there are no constraints.

One of the key characteristics that distinguished Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men from its prestige-drama peers was that it was serialized, but focused first and foremost on making each episode its own beautiful, handcrafted work of art. Instead of a novel for television, it was a short-story collection set in the same TV universe. The best stories, like “The Suitcase” (Don and Peggy bond during a long night at work), benefited from our collective knowledge of the characters, but many installments could function as gorgeous standalones for the sake of...

They’re back: Matthew Weiner’s laundry lists of forbidden plot points. In the days of “Mad Men,” screeners for each new season, half-season, or episode came with a laundry list of spoilers critics could not include under penalty of death, and similar letters have become so prevalent they’re now parodied by other creators. With “The Romanoffs,” those special requests have resumed. However, this review of “The Romanoffs” is relatively brief for reasons that have nothing to do with censorship: The first two episodes of Weiner’s Amazon Prime series are a serious disappointment. There’s not enough to spoil beyond the show’s many, many missteps.
For the first time, Amazon Prime will release one new episode of this anthology series per week for eight weeks, departing from its usual approach of releasing the full season at once. Each installment appears to be feature-length. (The first two clock...

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner magnifies the lingering “poison” of royal blood in his upcoming Amazon anthology series, The Romanoffs. The network previewed the eight-episode project with its intriguing new trailer, which previews an all-star cast featuring Aaron Eckhart, Amanda Peet, Diane Lane and Mad Men alumni Christina Hendricks, John Slattery and Jay R. Ferguson.

If we (and we do mean the royal we) weren’t excited for “The Romanoffs” before, we certainly are now, as Amazon has released a batch of first look photos and the Season 1 episode lineup for Matthew Weiner’s new anthology series.
The shot at the top of the page and the first one below are from Episode 102 (‘The Royal We”), which will star Corey Stoll, Kerry Bishé, Janet Montgomery and Noah Wyle. That story centers around a married couple in a rut, faced with their own temptations.
The following two shots are from the premiere episode, “The Violet Hour,” starring Aaron Eckhart, Marthe Keller, Inès Melab and Louise Bourgoin. Here’s Amazon’s description for that one: Set in Paris, an ancestral home holds the key to a family’s future.

Meet the Romanoffs.
Amazon has released several first look images of the new anthology series from “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner, along with a lineup for each of the eight episodes, each of which features different cast members.
“The Romanoffs” marks the first Amazon series to be rolled out on a weekly basis: The first two episodes, “The Violet Hour” and “The Royal We,” will debut on Friday, October 12, with subsequent episodes following each week.
“The Romanoffs,” which is created, written, directed and executive produced by Weiner, features eight separate stories about people in contemporary times who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. The show’s first trailer, which was released earlier this month, features the sprawling cast discussing their connection to the Romanov family. Each story centers around a new cast in a new location, set in seven countries around the globe.

Brush up on your Russian for the right reasons: A metric ton of your favorite prestige actors are taking over Amazon to depict Matthew Weiner’s new anthology series, “The Romanoffs. As seen in the new teaser trailer, they’re all consumed by the question of family — one specific family in particular.
Appropriately scored to a Tchaikovsky track from “The Nutcracker,” this teaser promises “three continents, seven countries, eight stories, one family?” What it also sells, like the first teaser which debuted during the Television Critics Association press tour, is its stacked cast.
Spread out across eight episodes, the official cast list currently includes Isabelle Huppert, Marthe Keller, Aaron Eckhart, Diane Lane, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Amanda Peet, Jack Huston, Corey Stoll, Andrew Rannells, Mike Doyle, Jj Feild, Janet Montgomery, Paul Reiser, Noah Wyle, Kathryn Hahn, Kerry Bishé, Jay R. Matthew Weiner’s “The Romanoffs” is finally coming to Amazon Prime, the streamer announced Saturday during the Television Critics Association press tour. The news was a bit of a surprise, as Amazon hasn’t said a word about the long-gestating project for months, following accusations of sexual misconduct posed against the “Mad Men” creator last fall by a writer who worked on the AMC series.
Amazon revealed the highly-anticipated original anthology series will debut on Friday, October 12. And, because you’ve been waiting so long to find out when it’s coming, Amazon also decided to tell you who is coming when it lands, with a teaser announcing a line-up of huge guest stars.
