Peacock’s new limited series “Apples Never Fall” is cut from the same cloth as “Big Little Lies,” with both shows adapted from the novels of Australian author Liane Moriarty.
“Apples Never Fall” follows a family, led by four adult children, trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of their mother Joy (Oscar-nominee Annette Bening). Bening is reliably excellent in this limited series, as is “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neil, who plays her on-screen husband. And Jake Lacy and Allison Brie shine as two of the four adult kids. All four performances have been praised by critics and its these turns that could lead the Emmy charge for the series.
Brian Lowry (CNN) stated: “As for the old expression ‘How do you like them apples?,’ in this case, happily, the answer is quite a lot.”

“Shōgun” is looking to become the next “Game of Thrones” Emmy sensation thanks to its similar awe-inspiring world-building combined with political machinations and stunning performances. The FX series adapts James Clavell‘s 1975 historical novel of the same name. The story follows an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) who ends up shipwrecked in Japan while Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) uncovers secrets that could benefit him in the political wars to come as he tries to rule one of the five Regents in Japan.
Husband and wife duo Rachel Kondo and “Top Gun: Maverick” story writer Justin Marks oversee this spectacular mini-series, which is a comprehensive, historical study that transcends world-building to present compelling characters. The expansive cast all deliver career-best work while Kondo and Marks handle each plot thread smartly and expertly.

It was going to be a difficult task to play Obi-Wan Kenobi after Alec Guinness’ incredible portrayal of the powerful Jedi but Ewan McGregor somehow managed to live up to the high expectations. After starring as the Jedi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Ewan McGregor got to play the character yet again in a Disney+ miniseries named after Obi-Wan Kenobi.

After the success of the miniseries, fans were left wondering if Ewan McGregor would ever return to the Star Wars universe to play Obi-Wan Kenobi one more time. A British solicitors is threatening to sue Netflix over alleged injuries sustained by contestants during filming of Squid Game: The Challenge.
Leaving aside the question of whether Squid Game: The Challenge entirely misses the darkly satirical point of the show on which it’s based, it sounds as though Netflix may one day come to regret commissioning the show in the first place.
A story at The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a British firm of solicitors – which specialises in injury claims – is on the cusp of filing a lawsuit against the streaming giant. Express Solicitors claims that several contestants on the game show have sustained injuries during filming, and that its producers “pushed the boundaries of safety in the name of entertainment.”
Those injuries are said to include “hypothermia and nerve damage” which, the lawyers say, arose as a “result of poor health and safety standards on set.”

This article has been corrected to include Alexander Payne’s first feature film, “Citizen Ruth.”
Alexander Payne has a near-perfect record when it comes to his movies being nominated for Academy Awards. The acclaimed writer, director, and producer — one of our very best — has made eight movies so far including his latest flick “The Holdovers” and five of them have been nominated for Oscars. Here’s the breakdown.
Payne’s debut feature film was “Citizen Ruth” (“The Passion of Martin” was only 49 minutes), which follows Laura Dern as a drug-addicted pregnant woman who finds herself in the middle of an abortion debate as she weighs up her choices regarding the pregnancy. This 1996 movie was not nominated for any Oscars.
His next movie was “Election,” which stars Matthew Broderick as a high school teacher who meets his match with Reese Witherspoon‘s over-achieving student. In 2000, the film was nominated for Best...

Last week at Star Wars Celebration, Disney released a flurry of exciting announcements, such as an Ahsoka trailer and three new movies (which are really, truly going to happen this time, promise!). Yet while fans embraced the news, the crown jewel of Disney’s Star Wars TV universe — The Mandalorian — was arguably having its worst week ever.
The show’s latest episode, “Guns for Hire,” scored the drama’s weakest fan reviews (via IMDb) since the neo-Western sci-fi drama launched four years ago. The episode wasn’t entirely an outlier, as fan gripes about the show’s third season have been rising in general, with the series’ Rotten Tomatoes user reviews this season plummeting from their usual low-90s perch to just 57 percent and its IMDb average similarly (though not as sharply) ebbing downward.

M3GAN, 2023’s newest horror sci-fi to release in cinemas, has shattered box office expectations and received widespread critical acclaim.
The thriller stars Get Out’s Allison Williams as genius roboticist Gemma who becomes the unexpected caretaker of her eight-year-old niece. When Gemma gives her niece a prototype of her new AI doll, M3GAN, the results are nightmarish.
Since its theatrical release over the weekend (6 January), the film has garnered a critics score of 94 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.
While horror films are notorious for failing to impress critics, M3GAN seems to have subverted the genre’s typical pitfalls.
So, what exactly is it that some of the top critics are loving about the movie?
“It’s incisive, sardonic and totally mean-spirited,” The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey writes in her four-star review. “Picture the Mean Girls queen bee Regina George if someone had given her a knife and a death wish.

One of the few certainties going into the 2023 awards season seems to be that Steven Spielberg will receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for his acclaimed semi-autobiographical drama “The Fabelmans,” starring Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and Seth Rogen. (He’s currently #1 in Gold Derby’s predictions.) Critics have been raving about the film since its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, with Katie Walsh in Tribune News Service saying it’s “a playful, honest, and ultimately gracious childhood memoir that derives its universal lessons from its specificity,” and Brian Lowry from CNN.com writing that “it’s a deeply personal chronicle from one of the cinema’s greatest talents.” With the filmmaker poised to become front and center in the upcoming awards season, let’s revisit all eight of Steven Spielberg’s Best Director Oscar races.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has spent 15 years developing his superhero film “Black Adam” which finally hits theaters on Friday, and based on the reviews, critics found the superhero film “underwhelming,” “super messy” and “baffling.”
In his review of the film, TheWrap’s Alonso Duralde wrote, “That task is the capture of an exceedingly powerful ancient metahuman known as Teth Adam (Dwayne Johnson), and despite the movie’s best efforts to jazz up the increasingly predictable superhero genre — this one doesn’t care if he kills people — “Black Adam” feels like both too much and not enough, and none of its narrative gambits are helped by a sludgy visual style that’s either distractingly artificial or dispiritingly gloomy, except when it manages to be both.”
Johnson produces and stars in “Black Adam,” which is his live-action entry into the DC universe and reunites him with “Jungle Cruise” director Jaume Collet-Serra. The film also stars Pierce Brosnan,...

A funny thing happened to Black Adam on its way to the cinema: critics finally got a look at the movie. While the film has undeniably been a passion project for Dwayne Johnson, with the actor circling the role for more than a decade before finally playing the part, that love has not necessarily translated into a movie that’s winning over a majority of film journalists.
Nonetheless, it should be noted that this is only the early reception for the DC Extended Universe’s most hotly anticipated film of the year, and that Black Adam’s current Rotten Tomatoes score of 52 percent (as of press time) is based on just 54 submitted reviews. Even so, there tends to be quite a bit of praise for Johnson… and plenty of criticism about most other elements in the film.

With the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks approaching next month, many networks will be airing what will hopefully be respectful and poignant specials of one America’s darkest days. We doubt anyone would consider the one TLC has announced among those.

“Soulmates” continues the trend of anthology series in today’s TV landscape, but this one has a particularly unique premise. Taking place 15 years in the future, human beings are now able to identify their soulmate after taking a scientifically-devised test. The AMC series comes from Brett Goldstein, actor and writer on “Ted Lasso,” and William Bridges, who won an Emmy in 2018 for co-writing the “Black Mirror” episode “U.S.S. Callister.”
Much like “Black Mirror” on Netflix and the Amazon series “Modern Love,” each episode tells a new story with fresh cast members, with the first season of “Soulmates” set to feature numerous actors from beloved TV shows.
The first episode centers recent Emmy nominee Sarah Snook from “Succession” and Kingsley Ben-Adir. Other episodes showcase Betsy Brandt (“Breaking Bad”), Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”), David Costabile (“Suits”), Malin Akerman (“Billions”), Sonya Cassidy (“Lodge 49”) and Bill Skarsgard (“It”).

While America and the world have been on the edge of their proverbial seats anticipating the looming US presidential election (among other breaking news stories), Showtime pounced to premiere its two-night limited series “The Comey Rule” on September 27 and 28, just five weeks out from the most heated and divisive presidential contest in decades.
“The Comey Rule” is based on former FBI Director James Comey‘s tell-all book “A Higher Loyalty,” adapted by writer and director Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips” and “Richard Jewell”). It is a riveting exposé on the controversial role played by Comey and the FBI in shaping the events leading up to the surprise victory of President Donald Trump over his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. It also deftly depicts the political machinations behind the scenes during the transition from former President Barack Obama to the current administration and Comey’s ultimate firing by President Trump.

20th Century Fox released their new super hero/action film, "Fantastic Four," into theaters today, August 7th,2015 and all the reviews have been turned in by the top, major movie critics. It turns out that it really didn't resonate well ,at all, with most of them, getting just an overall 27 score out of a possible 100 across 37 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Jamie Bell, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller and Toby Kebbell. We've added blurbs from a few of the critics, below. Clark Collis from Entertainment Weekly, gave it a very mediocre 50 grade, stating: "In short, this Josh Trank-directed reboot had a very low hurdle to overcome to become the best Ff movie so far. The most fantastical aspect of the movie is that it may not achieve that goal." Kenneth Turan over at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a 50 score. He stated:...

The first reviews for Fox's "Fantastic Four" reboot dropped this morning a few days out from release and the word is not good.
Even the most skeptical doubters of the new reboot were expecting Josh Trank's film to at least be an improvement on the two previous films from a decade ago, but some of the reviews seem to suggest we're in for something on about the same level. Here are some excerpts:
"Joining Spider-Man in the annals of dizzyingly rapid reboots, Fox's second stab at "Fantastic Four" comes just eight years after the first try and its sequel, which didn't set the bar inordinately high. Yet if this latest version, with a significantly younger cast (one's tempted to call it "Fantastic Four High"), clears that threshold, it's just barely, drawing from a different source to reimagine the quartet's origins without conspicuously improving them... Nik Wallenda’s blindfolded Chicago tightrope walk a success — next, he’ll do a headstand on a wire Discovery Channel’s “Skyscraper Live” walk mostly uneventful, despite Wallenda wearing a blindfold for the first time. But Wallenda hopes to add doing a headstand to his next feat. As Brian Lowry points out, the actual walk consumed about seven minutes of screentime, so hosts Willie Geist and Natalie Morales had the thankless task of filling time for 95 minutes. With a controversial monologue, Chris Rock gave “SNL” a pulse "It’s been so long since transgressive comedy was welcome on ‘SNL' that (Saturday’s) opening monologue was shocking,” says Jeremy Gerard, "for which we should be deeply grateful. Rock stormed not bravely but gleefully, which is a lot better, into forbidden territory. The locked room behind the sign that says Don’T Go There, and which therefore is irresistible, a siren...

Amazon's first original series has now begun its second season. Alpha House, which follows a group of Republican senators who live together in a house in DC, has added ten new episodes to its library on Amazon Prime. Alpha House stars John Goodman as Gil John Briggs, a Senator who, during the second season, must fend off a Democratic challenger and win re-election. This plot is ripped straight from the headlines; Alpha House's debut comes less than two weeks before midterm elections in the Us. When the first season of Alpha House arrived last year, critics met it with middling reviews. This year, the early consensus seems to have come out a little more positive, with critics from Variety and the Los Angeles Times praising the series' low-key brand of comedy. "Alpha House isn't the most popular or celebrated title amid the present onslaught of D.C.-set political series,...

"Scandal" appears to have moved past its dependence on cliffhangers “Scandal” was written around cliffhangers in its first three seasons, but the cliffhangers have now passed on to “How To Get Away with Murder.” As Joshua Alston says of “Scandal,” "It’s no longer a political thriller with heavy-to-a-fault spy genre flourishes, it’s 'Grey’s Anatomy' in the White House. And if that’s indeed what the writers are going for, the absence of a central, hashtag-friendly mystery makes perfect sense. I’ve been suspiciously anticipating this direction, but I’m far less worried than I was. If 'Like Father, Like Daughter' is any indication, that version of Scandal would be well-worth watching, if perhaps not the Twitter fuel it once was.” Plus: “Scandal” Secret Service agent talks about his big role. “The Simpsons” boss worries Sunday’s major death may be overhyped: We never said we’re killing off an “iconic” character “I’ve done everything I can to temper any disappointment by saying that, although the press is claiming this is an ‘iconic’ character, we never said that,” says executive producer Al Jean, in an interview with TVLine. “We just said it’s a ‘beloved’ character. I think it may have become overhyped, though I’ve never heard the term ‘underhyped’ before. Either way, it’s an emotional story, and it’s one we’re really proud of.” Plus: What TV critics said of “The Simpsons” when it debuted, and how “The Simpsons” looks at night -- illustrated. “Family Guy’s” crossover with “The Simpsons” is alternately fascinating, frustrating, amusing and annoying In other words, it’s your typical “Family Guy” episode. “Family Guy” Season 13: Stewie will get pregnant...

If the early reviews are to be believed, Amazon may have found its House of Cards. Jill Soloway's Transparent has debuted its entire first season on Amazon Instant Video, and the reviewers who got a chance to see the series in advance have showered it with universal acclaim. Transparent stars Jeffrey Tambor as a family patriarch who is transitioning from a man to a woman. Tambor's Maura character is at the center of the series, but her children, played by Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker, and Jay Duplass, are working through conflicts of their own. A trailer for the series is available on Amazon Studios' YouTube channel. If you're on the fence about Transparent, the show's reviews offer plenty of reasons to tune in. All 12 of the critical responses compiled on Metacritic offer effusive praise, and Amazon was eager to compile a few choice quotes for its press release announcing the show's debut.

HBO has a remarkable success rate, if you think about it, from "Boardwalk Empire," "The Newsroom," "True Detective" and "True Blood" to "Game of Thrones." All these series mix TV and film creative elements with strong characters, a fair dose of sex and the good old uber-violence. So what went wrong with HBO's latest series from "Lost" creator Damon Lindelof, which debuted to mixed reviews (here's Variety's Brian Lowry) and ratings Sunday night? It had all of those things. (HBO is making the first show available until Sunday July 6 on Yahoo.) First, the advance TV spots looked grim. Two per cent of the world's population vanishes in an instant, as poof! the baby vanishes from the rear car seat. Per the well-reviewed Tom Perrotta novel, how does everyone cope? Three years later, the story focuses on one struggling family, as single dad police chief (unbelievably played by too-tattooed and...

“Silicon Valley” doesn't premiere till next Sunday (April 6) but the sitcom about young software developers is already earning rave reviews. Calling it HBO’s best comedy in years, one that is “flat-out brilliant” and “consistently funny,” Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter effusively discusses the series’ “mass-appeal prospects” and says that it has the potential to become “HBO's first bona-fide, broad-based comedy hit.” And Brian Lowry of Variety echoes that praise, writing that “HBO has its most fully realized and potentially commercial player within [the comedy] genre in some time.” -Break- These early reviews paint “Silicon Valley” as the perfect antidote to potential “Modern Family” fatigue at the Emmys. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “James Rebhorn: Remembering the Quintessential Character Actor” — Brian Lowry at Variety praises a hard-working That Guy who was everyone’s favorite pharmacist/teacher/principal/judge/dentist/doctor. The great thing about Rebhorn was that he did so many movies that he’ll continue to pop at random whenever we all dip into the past three decades of film. For me, he was best when tricking Michael Douglas into playing The Game. “Captain America’s Chris Evans on life as Marvel’s superhero go-to guy” — Marvel arguably has a lot of go-to guys now, but Jonathan Bernstein at The Guardian has a solid profile of an actor who enjoys taking the lead, but who’s happy to join ensembles where it isn’t all about him. “The...

Lizzie Borden Took An Ax, the latest made-for-tv movie churned out by Lifetime, stars Christina Ricci in the titular role of the young woman who may have slaughtered her father and stepmother in cold blood.
Lizzie Borden Biopic Airs On Lifetime
Ricci, as critics point out, is at home in the role of Borden – channeling both unnervingly calm psychosis as well as believable innocence when it’s called for. Clea Duvall (21 Grams, Girl Interrupted) also shines as Borden’s sister, who reluctantly chooses to believe Lizzie’s assurances that she's not guilty.
Lifetime chose to give the legendary, true story of Lizzie Borden a makeover, eschewing facts in favor of adding more drama to an already unbelievable truth. The result, according to critics, is something that resembles camp – but not of the enjoyable variety one generally seeks out on Lifetime.

This week's comedy news
An august organ makes a fool of itself this week, as the influential Hollywood trade mag Variety slams Us standup Sarah Silverman for trying to be "as dirty as the guys". Silverman fans and comedy commentators immediately rounded on the paper's TV columnist Brian Lowry, accusing him of sexism and a failure to understand Silverman's comedy. In a review of her new HBO special We Are Miracles, Lowry wrote that Silverman (who has 4.8m Twitter followers) has only "frittered around the edges of breakout success … Despite all manner of career-friendly gifts – from her looks to solid acting chops – she's limited herself by appearing determined to prove she can be as dirty and distasteful as the boys."
For these comments, the critic was instantly criticised.

Melbourne, Nov. 24: A Us critic has sparked anger by suggesting that female comedians would be damaging their careers if they tell dirty jokes.
Variety.com writer Brian Lowry, while reviewing Sarah Silverman's upcoming HBO stand-up special 'We Are Miracles,' said that he was put off by the sight of a woman telling raunchy jokes, News.com.au reported.
Lowry said that despite all manner of career-friendly gifts - from her looks to solid acting chops - Silverman's limited herself by appearing determined to prove that she can be as dirty and distasteful as the boys.
He said that Silverman is never going to achieve mainstream success as her humour is more about shock-value rather than cleverness.

Sarah Silverman isn't exactly known for her G-rated sense of humor, but according to one writer at Variety, she's gone too far. TV columnist Brian Lowry gave the comedienne a scathing review of her upcoming HBO special We Are Miracles. According to Lowry, Silverman pushes "past the edge in a way that blunts her appeal" and "limited herself by appearing determined to prove she can be as dirty and disastrous as the boys." He added that a majority of the famous funnylady's jokes are "more about shock value than cleverness." But clearly some of the raunchier (Ok, extremely raunchy) scenes struck a nerve with the writer. "This isn't mean to suggest...
