Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

Zack Snyder’s tenure in tee Dcu has been divisive and controversial as he presented DC characters with a certain edge that was not accepted by fans. His presentation of idealistic characters like Superman and Batman being put in dire circumstances provoking them to kill other beings was not something that audiences were not ready to see.
Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/ Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel
Nevertheless, there have been Snyder loyalists who have defended his edgier take on characters and breaking previously established norms of the DC characters. Right from Man of Steel, Snyder took chances with the Superman lore with a controversial approach to Jonathan Kent’s death scene. Snyder defended this as an important step in Clark Kent’s evolution into being Superman.

Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," as it turns out, could have featured one of the biggest movie stars of all time -- Tom Cruise. The actor behind "Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun," among many, many other hits, was said to be in the running for a role in the film dating back to several years before it even came out, which Snyder later personally confirmed. But now, the filmmaker has added a pretty interesting layer to the whole thing: Cruise would have starred in the movie, but he wanted to take on the role of Rorschach, which isn't exactly what Snyder had in mind.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast as part of the promotional tour for his new movie "Rebel Moon -- Part Two: The Scargiver" (which hits Netflix this weekend), Snyder touched on Cruise's potential casting in "Watchmen" all those years ago. The director explained...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan played Edward Blake aka The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s 2009 film Watchmen. It was this lesser-known DC property that launched Snyder’s career into one of the fan-favorite Cbm directors. Morgan only had great things to say about the film, which he shared was ahead of its time. Morgan was sure that the series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons would be loved forever by fans.

Tom Cruise is easily one of the biggest Hollywood stars of all time. Even though he has been in the industry for over four decades, he is still sought after by the best directors to star in their projects. The actor himself exerts his influence too, often to bring out the best in him, and his decisions have always paid off.
However, he does not always get his way, as Zack Snyder recently revealed. The director confessed that he wanted the Mission: Impossible actor to play a certain character in one of his films, but Cruise sought a different role.

Zack Snyder is all set to release the second part of his space opera magnum opus Rebel Moon. The Netflix film is the follow-up to last year’s Chapter 1 – A Child of Fire. The filmmaker has had a busy few years after helming large-scale blockbusters such as Army of the Dead and Justice League.
While Snyder has worked with many A-listers, he reportedly got a call from the legendary star Tom Cruise early in his career while he had just finished 300. The actor reportedly gave him a surprise call after the film opened big at the box office. Cruise was also reportedly Snyder’s first choice to play Ozymandias in his divisive Watchmen adaptation.

15 years after its theatrical release, Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" occupies a curious spot in the history of comic book superhero cinema. While bleak blockbusters like "Dune: Part Two" and "Oppenheimer" might be all the rage in 2024, that wasn't the case when Snyder's film arrived in 2009. The success of "Iron Man" a year earlier signaled a shift in audiences' tastes. The brooding, auteur-led offerings of the 2000s (like "Hulk" and "The Dark Knight") would soon after give way to the studio-mandated crowd-pleasing spectacles of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Snyder's relentlessly downbeat and violent interpretation of writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons' equally grim milestone graphic novel suddenly felt wildly out of tempo with the genre, as did his subsequent vision for the now-kaput DC Extended Universe.

Zack Snyder has made quite a few controversial remarks in the past, and his leagues of followers were always game and ready to defend his side. Still, that is not the case with this statement the director once revealed in an interview, involving his own son.

The death of the Dark Universe was painful for those who saw its potential but a boon for Universal's larger monster horror franchise. Three years after the studio's 2017 "Mummy" crashed and burned at the box office, "Saw" and "Insidious" creator Leigh Whannell delivers a bold new take on "The Invisible Man" that reinvented the classic property while also establishing an exciting director-driven approach for future Universal monster re-imaginings. Whannell will try and repeat that success later this year with his "Wolf Man" reboot, which (naturally) made /FIlm's most anticipated movies of 2024. Before that, though, it turns out we're getting a seemingly brand-new and perhaps even more intriguing Universal monster flick titled "Abigail."

Potential "Deadpool 3" spoilers to follow.
In a time of great turmoil for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who better to come strolling in than the Merc With A Mouth himself? The big-screen iteration of Deadpool -- as played by Ryan Reynolds -- thrives on upending expectations for the superhero genre, like when "Deadpool 2" introduced a version of the famous mutant outlaw squad known as X-Force, only to immediately kill off the entire team in a comically violent fashion (save for Zazie Beetz's luck-powered Domino). A little chaos along those lines would surely do the MCU good at this juncture, allowing it to shake off its recent woes and work towards a better tomorrow.
For that to happen, however, Marvel Studios should probably do a little House (of Ideas) cleaning first. Enter "Deadpool 3," a three-quel that's gotten fans hyped ever since it was confirmed to bring Reynolds' Wade Wilson into the MCU.

Zack Snyder's polarizing 2009 film adaptation of "Watchmen" has the unfortunate distinction of being arguably the third-worst "Watchmen," behind the original graphic novel and the later HBO miniseries. It's a sprawling, convoluted film that made superheroes dark, gritty, and philosophical at a time when the considerably-lighter Marvel Cinematic Universe was just beginning to grind to life. Snyder seems interested in the imagery and iconography of superheroes -- predispositions that would define his later superhero films with DC -- but his "Watchmen" often struggles with making that approach cohere into an interesting narrative. The film is melodramatic -- operatic, even -- and functions in a heightened emotional key that doesn't often translate well. It feels like the film should have either pushed harder into the theatrics inherent in dressing up as a masked crusader or dialed back some of the unrestrained emotion. The film lacks balance, in other words.
However, that...

Everybody knows about the Justice League, but have you heard of the Justice Society of America? In the DC Comics universe, they're another superhero supergroup, and they've finally made their Dceu appearance in the latest DC film, "Black Adam." In "Black Adam," the Jsa are led by Hawkman, played by Aldis Hodge, who faces off against Dwayne Johnson's antihero character, Black Adam. He's joined by Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), who can bend reality and foretell the future, the size-shifting Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and master of winds, Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). While they're not quite A-listers like Batman and Superman, the members of the Jsa are superheroes in their own right and have their own fascinating stories to be told, so it's very likely that we'll see more of them in upcoming Dceu films and shows. After all, Johnson thinks the Dceu is going to grow more cohesive after "Black Adam,...

EntertainmentThe film is titled ‘Kathal - The Core’, as was announced by director Jeo Baby on the occasion of Jyothika’s birthday.Tnm StaffIt looks like an old family picture, the kind that people have on their bedside table. A couple posing for a camera, most likely the old fashioned film camera, to get a photo together. Only, these are two very familiar faces, of two big stars coming together. Mammootty, who is among the top actors and biggest stars of south India, is joined by Jyothika, another prominent actor from the Tamil film industry, in a new movie’s poster. The film is titled Kathal - The Core, and Jeo Baby, who churns out critically acclaimed films year after year, is directing it. On the evening of Tuesday, October 18, Jeo Baby put out a post saying, “Our next film, Kathal - The Core. Today, it is the birthday of our heroine.

Sometime in 2014, a family who’d just moved into their dream home in the upscale suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, started getting ominous letters from someone identifying themselves as “The Watcher.” Four years later, those events were chronicled by Reeves Wiedeman in a New York article that immediately went viral.
Now, four years after that, Wiedeman’s story has been turned — inevitably, given the current gold-rush for adaptable true-crime material — into Netflix’s The Watcher, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. But in the process, a singularly striking story has been transformed into just another ripped-from-the-headlines drama in an endless sea of content, neither bad enough to sink to the bottom nor good enough to float to the top.
As spooky true stories go, 657 Boulevard’s is a relatively simple one: Though the letters indicated a bone-chilling familiarity with and...

If you're a pessimist living in whatever national or global context that failed you or tested your patience, then a film like Bertrand Bonello's "Coma" might be a mirror to that existential exhaustion. Unless you're one of those who, understandably, balk at the recent genre of films concerning itself with the Covid-19 pandemic.
For 80 minutes of its runtime, "Coma" is a river of disconcerting imagery. The film is less plot and more stream-of-consciousness as it tracks the boredom of a young unnamed French teenager (Louise Labèque from Bonello's previous directorial NYFF entry "Zombi Child") as she scours for entertainment during a lockdown that's highly implied to be a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. An amorphous film that flashes the middle finger to conventionality from its launch, "Coma" blossoms into a metaphorical and allegorical Rorschach test.
Pandemic Fever
"Coma" concerns itself with the fraying soul and sanity of a young person.

Following The Young Pope, The New Pope, and The Two Popes, the time has officially come for the Woke Pope. In Viaggio, Gianfranco Rosi’s fascinating Rorschach test of a documentary, is also something of a People’s History of Pope Francis, pontiff since 2013, in that it largely consists of television broadcast footage of the man on his sundry global travels, though the filmmaker wisely deigns not to visualize his popular Twitter account. We don’t glimpse him from his own subjective point-of-view, as Fernando Meirelles and Jonathan Pryce attempted to show in their version; instead Rosi privileges what the global Roman Catholic membership and also what curious nonbelievers and secular onlookers observe—the dignified outer surface. And intriguingly enough, it’s a fairly flattering picture as one of the world’s oldest, most powerful institutions attempts some crisis PR in front of the contemporary world’s gaze.

Now that the "Scream" series is under the stewardship of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, we're heading into a new era of Ghostface, with the sixth movie leaving Woodsboro and Sidney Prescott behind, and slashing toward the Big Apple as the Carpenter sisters trying their hardest to start a new life after surviving the previous film. "Scream 5" (aka just "Scream") was structured as a passing of the torch from the franchise started by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson to the new writing/directing duo, and according to star Melissa Barrera, Ghostface has a major advantage given New York City's massive population. Barrera had told Collider that setting the story in NYC is "like 20 times more mortifying, it's awful," and cited the bustling energy as a major contributing factor:
"Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help,...

This post contains spoilers for the season finale of The Rehearsal, which is now streaming on HBO Max.
Among the most clever things about Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal is that its very structure, along with the secrecy behind how Fielder and company produced the docu-comedy, makes it almost entirely analysis-proof. We just know so little about which parts are real, which parts are not, what happened that we did not see, and how much more empathetic Fielder may be than the version of himself he plays here (and before that,...

Stars: Vincent Stalba, Stella Creel, Tiffany Christy, Miles Hendler, Jeff Pearson, Kali Russell | Written by Joe Badon, Jason Kruppa | Directed by Joe Badon
The new short from director Joe Badon, The Blood of the Dinosaurs, took me about eighteen minutes to watch. It may take a lifetime to figure out just what I watched.
Beginning with a recreation of the end of the Age of Reptiles staged with plastic dinosaurs, fireworks and exceptionally primitive animation, Badon and co-writer Jason Kruppa have put created a film that has only the most minimal framework of a plot. And that is used more to hang collages of bizarre footage and imagery on rather than tell a narrative story.
What narrative we do get is framed a the Christmas edition of “The Uncle Bobbo Show”, a children’s show airing on public access TV. Uncle Bobbo gives off the vibes of Dexter with severe brain damage.
