Also, Kate is secretly being fast-tracked behind the scenes to be the next US Vice President.
Has The Diplomat Been Renewed?
Yes! Proving to be an unexpected hit for Netflix, The Diplomat Season 2 renewal came just a week after Season 1 aired.

The Diplomat Season 2 is on the way. The Netflix series is a political drama created by Deborah Cahn, whose work in similar TV hits like Homeland and The West Wing made for great TV. This Netflix hit show follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a former CIA agent taken away from the life-saving work she was doing in Afghanistan to the cozy suburbs of London as the US ambassador to the UK. While it was a privilege to be hand-selected for this job, it’s a test to see whether she has the brains and stamina for a much tougher job...

Sam Claflin as Billy Dunne, Daisy Jones & the Six (Prime Video)
Claflin had no trouble slipping into the intense feelings of ’70s-era singer Billy Dunne. “Emotions were so on the edge for me at the time,” says Claflin. “Previously when I’d shot emotional scenes, I’ve needed a tear stick to help push me over the edge. But on Daisy, I didn’t need one ounce of help.”
For Claflin, it was partially his own divorce that still loomed over him, but also the fact that star-crossed love was not an unfamiliar concept. “I have experienced unrequited love, the chasing and the inability of making certain decisions in certain moments,” he says. “There were so many conversations between Billy and Camila (Camila Morrone), or Billy and Daisy (Riley Keough), that I have experienced firsthand or seen friends go through.”

Politics shouldn’t be the least bit entertaining. In a perfect democratic political system, very serious people dress up in formal wear, gather in Greco-Roman style buildings, and sincerely debate the issues of the day, coming to a perfect compromise with well-reasoned legislations. It’s all very dry. Unfortunately for our society, that’s obviously not the world we live in. Fortunately for our televised bemusement, however, it is.
No medium is better suited to take advantage of political dysfunction than television. Episodic dramas play with the exquisite tension produced by flawed institutions while comedies just have a blast laughing at the circus. Even the most idealistic political TV series like The West Wing implicitly understand that there’s something pulpy and fun about a group of seemingly well-educated professionals trying to confront the impossible contradictions of running a free society.

The saying “90 percent of directing is casting” has been attributed to everyone from John Ford to Robert Altman to Martin Scorsese, but in the case of Netflix’s much-buzzed-about romantic political drama “The Diplomat,” you might even be able to crank that number to 95, especially as casting director Julie Schubert tells it, getting your first-choice leads is the ultimate Hail Mary pass.
“Keri Russell was on the very first list,” says Schubert, who can barely contain her enthusiasm for the versatile actress. “She is truly one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet in your entire life. And one of the hardest working people you will ever meet in your entire life. She’s top to bottom: pure joy.”

This story about Keri Russell and “The Diplomat” first ran in the drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
It’s a little surprising to learn that Debora Cahn did not write the lead role of her new Netflix show “The Diplomat” — U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kate Wyler — for Keri Russell. The role requires someone serious but shambolic, beautiful but uninterested in her beauty, smart but susceptible — and, of course, tangled in a love-hate marriage with her husband, Hal, played by lovable rogue Rufus Sewell.
Who else would you want but the woman we know as the charming title character in “Felicity” turned steely spy in “The Americans,” Keri Russell? You know — the adorable person you definitely do not mess with?
But Russell, 47, it turns out, was totally unavailable. “I wasn’t shopping around for a television show,” Russell said via Zoom from London, wearing big cool-dork...

Arguably one of the most indelible images from the much-discussed Succession finale was that of two hands not quite interlocked. Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) holds out his palm for his wife, Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook), to take in the back of a car. She doesn’t quite grasp it, her hand limply resting in his. It’s a final image of a marriage that audiences witnessed oscillate between flirtation and vitriol during the course of the season.
Of the many threads running through Succession‘s final season, maybe the most captivating was the fractured relationship between Shiv and Tom, who went from playing a bizarre sexualized game called “bitey” to screaming at each other on a terrace during an election night party. By the finale, when Tom was named CEO of the company formerly run by Shiv’s father, their relationship was even more strained.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is twirling offstage and “The Crown” finally got to The Revenge Dress, so it has not exactly been a low-key television season when it comes to costuming. (Not to mention the genius Easter eggs hidden in Tanya’s costumes on “The White Lotus.”) But no one is surprised when shows with fabulous costumes continue to exhibit their skill at crafting fabulous costumes that serve as eye candy and character development. Here are five series that premiered during the 2022-2023 season that deserve attention from the 2023 Emmys for their costumes.

The following contains major spoilers for The Diplomat.
Netflix’s buzzy political drama The Diplomat almost feels like it came out of nowhere, rocketing to dominate the streamer’s Top Ten list within days of its April premiere. But, if you’ve seen the show, it’s easy to understand its appeal, a welcome throwback to the fast, quick-witted character banter of shows like The West Wing mixed with the wild plot twists of Homeland.
The first season of The Diplomat ended with a bang—literally. Much as the series’ first episode began with the attack on the Hms Courageous which was the reason Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) was reassigned to London, the season finale concludes with a car bomb that seems poised to reshape the series headed into its second. Or, at the very least, make the stakes a whole lot higher. (Thank goodness Netflix already renewed it, is what I’m saying.

Midway through Episode 6 of The Diplomat, Keri Russell‘s titular emissary Kate Wyler takes a nasty spill down a stairwell as David Gyasi’s Austin Dennison understandably looks on in horror. Viewers of the Netflix drama were no doubt similarly distressed considering the sequence was shot without any well-timed cutaways — and with Russell in full view the entire time (see for yourself above).
Series creator/EP/showrunner Debora Cahn tells TVLine that Russell “wanted to do the stunt” herself, adding, “We had a really great stunt coordinator there and they taught her how to do the move, and she did it beautifully.

Huzzah!
The Diplomat, Keri Russell's starring vehicle at Netflix, has scored a very quick renewal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
We urged you to watch the series before it dropped, assuring you that it has all of the intrigue, thrills, and wit you expect from Netflix's best series, so we're super happy about this news.
The early renewal shouldn't be a surprise, given the quality of the show.
It becomes even less surprising when you learn that Netflix shared that The Diplomat was the top show the week it dropped, netting 57.48 million viewing hours.
Fans should be jumping for joy after an immense cliffhanger that might have left diehards rioting in the streets without resolution.
In The Diplomat, Russell stars as Kate Wyler, the latest US Ambassador to the United Kingdom.
A career diplomat, Kate had expected her next role to be on the front lines of the latest bruhaha in Afghanistan.

Kate Wyler was always going to end “The Diplomat” wearing a red dress.
The instantly iconic look in the Netflix series’ season finale finds Keri Russell’s newly appointed diplomat to the U.K. attending a gala at the Louvre in a flowing red gown, evoking none other than Audrey Hepburn in “Funny Face.” And that particular look was written into series creator Debora Cahn’s script from the beginning.
“Red was always in Debora’s script,” “The Diplomat” costume designer Roland Sanchez told IndieWire. “Debora laid it all out. She’s very in tune. She’s very costume oriented and there’s reasons why she does things for these characters.”
Working from the script, Sanchez found a red dress from Galvan London that fit the bill. But then the location scout brought bad news. “[The dress] was originally a burgundy. But we were shooting in a burgundy room the exact color of the dress,...

Keri Russell is back. The Emmy-nominated star of “The Americans” returns to TV with the new Netflix series “The Diplomat” from showrunner Debora Cahn. In the eight-episode political drama, which is streaming now, Russell stars as Kate Wyler, a competent and confident woman in her first ambassadorship who, unbeknownst to her, is being considered for the position of vice president.
Although Kate expects to be sent to Afghanistan at the start of the limited series, she quickly finds herself named the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom after an attack on the Royal Navy. Once she touches down across the pond, Kate must prove she can navigate high-stakes crises and forge strategic alliances while secretly dealing with a failing marriage to another career diplomat (Rufus Sewell). With comparisons to shows like longtime Emmy favorite “The Good Wife,” “The Diplomat” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, with the release of “Mrs. Davis” and “The Diplomat,” we tackle drama.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! If it’s a day of the week that ends with the letter Y, you can be sure I have a new favorite Emmy contender. This week, that’s the Peacock series “Mrs. Davis,” an ostensible drama for awards purposes but a show that blends together so many different tones and genres that it almost defies classification. When I was telling a real-life friend about “Mrs. Davis” last night, I compared it to “The Stand,” “Fight Club,” “The Truman Show,” “The Big Lebowski,” Amazon’s “Good Omens” and then also none of those but maybe “Southland Tales” too? There are moments when TV run times can be a helpful kind of spoiler. If things seem a little too quiet and there’s only so many minutes left before the ending and the credits roll, there’s a certain wondering and waiting feeling. Will that tension get released or will that lack of resolution get carried over into the next episode? Watch a show for long enough — even if it’s only for a single season, like with the new Netflix drama “The Diplomat” — and you start to pick up its rhythms to the point where that anticipation comes even if you’re not checking timecodes.
