Singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has shared that she draws inspiration from “weird” and “embarrassing” moments in her life.
The 20-year-old ‘Good 4 U’ singer, who has most recently been linked to actor Louis Partridge, 20, and whose exes reportedly include music executive Zack Bia, 26 – added she loved seeing the ‘Priscilla’ film and enjoys reading Dolly Alderton’s books as she loves the writer’s take on messy romances, reports Female First UK.
She told Variety when asked if there was any storytelling she had been impressed by recently: “I saw Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I think she’s such an incredible storyteller. I’ve got Patti Smith’s ‘Year of the Monkey’ on my bedside table, and I’ve read ‘Just Kids’ and ‘Woolgathering’.”

Exclusive: Creatives from Jax Media and Universal International Studios (Uis) have talked up “subverting traditional narratives” by bringing “heart and warmth” to upcoming Channel 4 religious comedy Everyone Else Burns.
The Simon Bird-starrer is the first to hail from Jax’s UK office, headed up by former Baby Cow exec Molly Seymour, and follows a family in a religious sect who believe the world is going to end. Bird stars as misguided patriarch David, with Kate O’Flynn, Lolly Adefope, Kadiff Kirwan and Morgana Robinson opposite the Inbetweeners alum.
Speaking to Deadline, Jax President Brooke Posch and Seymour said creators Dillon Mapletoft and Oliver Taylor never intended to poke fun at the subject matter. Each character goes on their own personal journey and there are nuances to the way in which they relate to their hyper-religious upbringing. Variety has selected its list of 10 Brits to Watch for 2023, an honor the publication has been bestowing since 2013 on artists across all entertainment media. Past honorees include Harry Styles, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jodie Turner-Smith.
The honorees will be profiled in the Feb. 8 issue of Variety and feted at the seventh annual Newport Beach Film Festival U.K. Honors, to be held at the Londoner Hotel in London.
“With film and television production roaring in the U.K., the royals constantly garnering international chatter and the search for a new James Bond heating up, there’s another fact of U.K. entertainment life that shouldn’t be overlooked: the U.K. new-creatives well is fairly overflowing,” said Steven Gaydos, Variety‘s senior VP of global content and executive editor. “Always a dynamic source of exciting fresh voices, one look at Variety’s 2023 10 Brits to Watch proves that Britannia remains a vital center of artistic regeneration.

If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.
Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

Dish, the hit podcast hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, will be getting extra social for the festive season as the presenting duo escape the studio and cosy up at Grimmy’s own home, where some special guests have been invited round for Christmas food, drink and laughs.
In a series of episodes, Hugh Bonneville, Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond, and Annie Mac will all settle down for a fireside chat, while Michelin star chef Angela Hartnett cooks and Grimshaw serves up the drinks. The hosts’ warm reception and sense of humour make Dish the most hospitable and social show on the planet.
Dish takes a pioneering approach to turning podcasts into a social event: it’s recorded like a podcast, shot for Instagram and edited for TikTok. As a result, it’s had 20 weeks at number one on Apple’s food podcast chart and is regularly in the top 20 Apple shows.

At first glance, Everything’s Trash and Everything I Know About Love may seem most similar for their titles, the two monikers rife with potential for a “Who’s on First” style conundrum. Both series deal with the perils and pleasures of being young in the big city. Everything’s Trash‘s protagonist Phoebe, a well-known podcaster living in New York City, is at that particular intersection of young adulthood where career momentum hasn’t yet translated into the life she’s hoping for; whereas Everything I Know About Love‘s Maggie has just moved to London with three girlfriends (post-uni) and is trying desperately to get her foot into any professional door she can. Trash’s Phoebe is navigating the specifics of being a Black woman in a field that still mostly belongs to white men; Love‘s Maggie is navigating the sexual politics of young adulthood.

Everything I Know About Love isn't just a love letter to friendship—it's also an ode to the very specific time period it's set in: 2012. The Peacock series based on Dolly Alderton's bestselling memoir of the same name follows childhood BFFs Maggie (Emma Appleton) and Birdy (Bel Powley) as they move into their first London flat with their two college pals, Nell (Marli Siu) and Amara (Aliyah Odoffin). Together, they navigate bad dates, career woes, heartaches and humiliations—all while rocking the very best (and worst!) fashions the 2010s gave us. One of the biggest aesthetics of the time was "indie sleaze," a fashion era defined by skinny jeans, smudged eyeliner, cropped leather...

The success of “Fleabag” loosed a glut of shows about young women tottering – heels broken, mascara smeared – in the vague direction of adult responsibility. Few have been as purely enjoyable as “Everything I Know About Love,” Dolly Alderton’s adaptation of her own memoir, which debuts on Peacock this week after winning plaudits on the BBC in midsummer.
With its photogenic cast, pyjama-party vibe and commitment to steering its characters towards better things, this Working Title-produced, London-set miniseries should provide superior comfort TV for anyone constitutionally unable to face Nathan Fielder’s postmodern provocations or the carnage of a “Game of Thrones” prequel. It’ll be only more comforting the more years you have on the show’s fresh-faced principals.
Alderton’s onscreen surrogate is Maggie Marshall (Emma Appleton), encountered just before the 2012 Olympics as a flighty 24-year-old blogger with a thrusting new beau in porkpie hat-sporting, multiple red flag-raising...

Four female friends share the experience of navigating post-college life in London in Peacock’s new series “Everything I Know About Love.”
Set in 2012, the show, which is based on the book of the same name by Dolly Alderton, combines humor and drama as it follows 20 somethings Maggie (Emma Appleton), Birdy (Bel Powley), Nell (Marli Siu) and Amara (Aliyah Odoffin) as they work on adulting, seek out romance, and even learn a choreographed dance or two in their shared living room.
“I think it’s just so nice to see female friendships not taking a backseat in the storyline,” Appleton told TheWrap. “It’s very much front and center. And that is the romance. And that is most important in this story.”

Ayling-Ellis, who remains the only deaf actor to be cast as regular in a soap, EastEnders, revealed the news to Deadline prior to her taking to the stage to deliver the MacTaggart on the final day of the Edinburgh TV Festival.
The as-yet-untitled comedy-drama is based on Ayling-Ellis’ experiences of the deaf dating scene and she will also star in the show, while supervizing a disabled writers’ room.
She has had a whirlwind year, having won Strictly Come Dancing following a string of incredible performances that included her “silent dance” with partner Giovanni Pernice.

Succession star Brian Cox has said Logan Roy, the arch-villain he plays in the HBO/Sky epic, would “hate me,” but claimed he “loves” and “respects the character.”
Cox told the Edinburgh TV Festival the pair share a “deep disappointment in the human experience” but he differs from Roy in being an “optimist.”
“I think things would get better and he doesn’t so Logan would hate me,” he said to a packed audience on the final day of the Festival. “He would say ‘I wish that Brian Cox would just shut the f*ck up’.”
Cox revealed he “loves” and “respects” the character, who he has portrayed with fanfare for three seasons, with a fourth in the offing.
“Unlike Trump or Murdoch he’s self made,” he explained. “He did it all himself. He’s a misanthrope, is kind of unhappy and his curse is he loves his children.

The first (and hopefully not last) season of “Everything I Know About Love” runs for seven episodes. It’s an odd length for a TV season, but this is a show where that lack of a round number makes perfect sense. It’s such an effective form of TV-as-memoir that every episode feels like it could be its last. A snapshot in time of four friends living in London in the summer of 2012, the Peacock original captures the feeling of a group of people who recognize their whole lives are ahead of them, made from chapters that could start or end at any minute. Packed with mid-20s energy and angst, occasional flippancy and real heart, “Everything I Know About Love” justifies giving a date barely a decade past a full and thoughtful revisit.

Everything I Know About Love premiered on Peacock Thursday, August 25.
Based on Dolly Alderton's memoir of the same, we follow the story of four best friends in 2012 as they navigate life and love.
TV Fanatic got the chance to speak with Emma Appleton (Maggie), Marli Siu (Nell), and Aliyah Odoffin (Amara) about working on the series.
Emma was instantly attracted to the series because she fell in love with the writing and the characters.
"I never really read characters so complex and nuanced and real. I was like, 'I've got a friend," the star shared.
"As an actor, you want to tell the truth, and it had all of those components."
Aliyah recalls reading the script fondly.
"I remember I printed out in the first episode, and I was lying on my carpet, and I was like lying on my belly, feet in the air, like I was texting a crush,...

When Everything I Know About Love first arrived in my inbox, I expected a series that focuses on a focal couple as they navigate the highs and lows of being in a relationship.
However, the series goes in a drastically different direction than I first anticipated, and it solidifies itself as one of the year's best shows.
In this peak TV era, it's rare for shows to break through with an original concept, but Everything I Know About Love is a diamond in the rough.
Based on Dolly Alderton's memoir of the same name, we pick up in 2012 with Maggie (Emma Appleton), a twentysomething who is struggling to get her life in order.
She's partying every single night of the week, lacks focus, and is heavily reliant on her best friend since her youth, Birdy (played by Bel Powley), to help her navigate life.
Birdy doesn't quite have it together,...

The highest of highs and the lowest of lows—a.k.a. your 20s. Defined by simultaneous feelings of self-doubt and overconfidence, uncertainty and anticipation, and frustration and excitement, the decade is quite the rollercoaster ride. Thankfully, it's a ride that everyone boards—meaning there's a barrage of films, songs, books and TV shows that are all too relatable for anyone feeling the weight (or enjoying the freedom!) that comes with being a 20-something. Among the most recent is Peacock's Everything I Know About Love, a new series inspired by Dolly Alderton's memoir of the same name. Set in a house-share in London in 2012, the show follows childhood BFFs Maggie and Birdy, along...

Behind every romantic-comedy protagonist is their trusty sidekick. The rom-com formula has long relied on this archetypal character to guide its leading lady along the road to true love. They often provide funny anecdotes, inspirational advice, and a shoulder to cry on, but for the most part, they don't exist outside of this supportive role—even when their relationship with the main character is by far the strongest of the entire film. Insert Everything I Know About Love, Peacock's new series that takes this blueprint and flips it on its head. Following the arc of a deep friendship as a traditional rom-com might, the show—inspired by Dolly Alderton's memoir of the same...

Prepare to fall for head over heels for Everything I Know About Love. Don't get it twisted, though—the upcoming Peacock series, a semi-fictionalized version of Dolly Alderton's memoir of the same name, is not the stuff of rom-coms. Instead, the central love story is actually the friendship between two 20-somethings, Maggie (Emma Appleton) and Birdy (Bel Powley). Living in London with two of their university pals, the childhood besties are riding the rollercoaster that is young adulthood and experiencing all the twists and turns that come with it. The premise might sound familiar, but what makes the series stand out among its predecessors is, as Powley told Cosmopolitan UK in June, that...

In a chic Islington restaurant, Dolly Alderton asks me where I met my partner. While most people will politely smile and half-listen to the answer, Alderton — who eats love stories for breakfast — virtually squeals at the meet-cute I serve up, which I had a hunch she of all people would appreciate.
The London-born Alderton is one of the most recognizable columnists in the U.K., and has built a career as a journalist and author on, well, love. And, really, you would struggle to find someone who flits as effortlessly between waxing poetic about Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and quoting Rob Reiner’s “When Harry Met Sally.”
Alderton this week makes her screenwriting debut with a Working Title-produced adaptation of her hugely popular memoir, “Everything I Know About Love,” which premieres on BBC One on Tuesday night. (A U.S. deal for the show is still in the works.

Mizuki, the desperately unhappy Tokyo housewife at the center of Fault Lines by Emily Itami (out Sept. 7), can't figure out when she became so invisible. As of two weeks ago, I knew not a thing of substance when it came to Greek mythology. If you asked me about Achilles, I would have told you that there was something wonky going on with his heel. To be honest, I didn't think I had any interest in the subject. But when I saw tons of videos on TikTok about Madeline Miller's 2012 debut novel, The Song of Achilles ($17), rather than dismiss it due to lack of interest, I immediately purchased a copy. Why? Because every single TikTok video was about how heart-wrenching and sad the book is, and I, a Pisces, love reading sad sh*t that makes me cry more than any other type of book.

I'd heard Dolly Alderton's name from other book-loving friends in reference to her first book, Everything I Know About Love, but never got around to reading the memoir (we all know how the ever-growing Tbr list goes). So when I was given an opportunity to read her newest book, Ghosts ($21), ahead of its August release, I took it as a sign and dove right in.
I thought this book would be a straightforward romantic comedy about getting ghosted after it was pitched to me as the "must-read rom-com of the summer," but oof, was that assessment wrong! Although Ghosts follows a year in the life of 32-year-old food writer Nina Dean in which she does, in fact, get ghosted by a man she's dated for three months, this story is a full, multifaceted picture of Nina's life beyond her current relationship status.
Aside from accurately portraying the fallout of a partner ghosting you,...
