The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Mary Jane, the Amy Herzog play starring Rachel McAdams in her Broadway debut, has been given a two-week extension by producer Manhattan Theatre Club.
The play, which opened to excellent reviews Tuesday, will now run through Sunday, June 16, at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
Directed by Anne Kauffman, Mary Jane stars McAdams as the mother of a critically ill young boy. Relying on sheer optimism and humor, the single mom of the title faces each day through inner strength, love and a makeshift family of caretakers, nurses and other mothers facing tragedy.
In addition to McAdams, Mary Jane features April Matthis (The Piano Lesson), Susan Pourfar (Tribes), Lily Santiago (La Brea), and Brenda Wehle (The Gilded Age).

In many ways, the role of Mary Jane, the single mother at the center of Amy Herzog’s compassionate play Mary Jane, was made for Rachel McAdams.
The actress’ most notable characters include an acid-tongued high-school student (Mean Girls), a lovesick Southern belle (The Notebook) and a tireless investigative reporter (Spotlight), but last year she delivered a quietly moving performance in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, which marked a new turn in her understated style.
In Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel, McAdams breathed new life into Margaret’s mother Barbara, a woman estranged from her conservative family after marrying a Jewish man (Benny Safdie). The actress’ best scenes are the hushed ones, moments in which her character, enveloped by the quiet of an empty house, releases the tension in her shoulders and indulges in her anxieties and uncertainties. Not only must Barbara...

“She’s really good at honoring the original language and the original story while also sewing in the needs of today’s audience,” reflects Caleb Eberhardt on what is so unique about Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play “An Enemy of the People.” The actor plays the crucial role of Hovstad, the editor of a local newspaper in the Norwegian town where the drama takes place who has to make an important decision when his friend, Dr. Stockmann (Jeremy Strong), has alarming news about the safety of the town’s waters. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
One of the facets of Herzog’s work that Eberhardt appreciates most is her collaboration on the crafting of his character. “I particularly have a big reverence for her because of her willingness to hear my specific perspective in making Hovstad a Black man in the...

Rachel McAdams may not be in The Notebook on Broadway, but that doesn’t mean she’s any less excited about the show.
During a conversation with Broadway.com editor-in-chief Paul Wontorek on The Broadway Show, the Oscar nominee discussed her own debut on the Great White Way in new play Mary Jane by Amy Herzog, who recently adapted A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain. Two blocks away from the show, the musical adaptation of The Notebook is taking place in front of sold-out crowds.
“[It’s] crazy, just crazy,” McAdams said of the coincidence of both shows playing at the same time. She went on to joke that people keep thinking she’s starring in the musical adaptation of one of her breakout roles, based on the Nicholas Sparks best-selling novel.
She recalled her friend’s mom saying, “We’re going to see Rachel on Broadway! And she’s going to be singing and dancing!

This article contains spoilers about the 2024 Broadway production of “An Enemy of the People.”
There will likely be few scenes this Broadway season more harrowing than the climax of Sam Gold’s “An Enemy of the People,” in which a town hall meeting called by Dr. Thomas Stockmann devolves into verbal and physical assault. In the aftermath of the scene’s brutality against the Norwegian doctor, who warns his community that their waters are contaminated, actor Jeremy Strong emerges from a crouched position on the stage floor in the Circle in the Square Theatre, where he has huddled and shrunk his body down to withstand a torrent of blows. It is a visceral moment of live theatre, one that the actor commits to wholeheartedly and that the Tony Awards should nominate.
What leads up to that frightening display of ignorance and animus is made all the richer by Strong’s performance.

When climate protesters disrupted a performance of the An Enemy of the People earlier this month, Victoria Pedretti seesawed between siding with the activists or the agitated audience members. The play had reached a crescendo: The town’s doctor, Dr. Stockmann, prepared to discuss a potential pathogen in the town’s ground water before a dissenting crowd, when Extinction Rebellion NYC members captured the audience’s attention crying “no theater on a dead planet.”

“It is a pretty great crop of plays this year, several that have become big commercial hits,” declares Sam Eckmann about the many dramas and revivals in contention for nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. Sam and I met for the very first time this season to discuss the 15 productions eligible for nominations, reviewing our picks in seven of the 11 play categories. It has only been 12 years since New York audiences saw a production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic nineteenth-century play “An Enemy of the People.” But unlike that last staging at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the version that just opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Mar. 18 is a departure, thanks to the vision of director Sam Gold and a new adaptation of the text by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. “Enemy” runs through June 16, the day of the 2024 Tony Awards.

Succession fame Jeremy Strong has joined forces with The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli in a new Broadway project. Former Yale student Strong mostly appeared as an actor in stage plays. His breakthrough role did not come until 2018 when he starred as the middle son Kendall Roy in the comedy-drama TV series Succession.

“No theater on a dead planet!” is a chanted refrain that does not appear in Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of a People. Nor is it part of the 2024 English adaptation by playwright Amy Herzog, who’s preserved the play’s late-19th-century setting (and who also skillfully adapted A Doll’s House last season). But it was perhaps the most resonant line in the reviewed performance of this production, which, as has now been widely reported, was interrupted by a trio of protestors from the climate activism group Extinction Rebellion.
If you see An Enemy of the People—which, to be clear, you should—chances are that the disruptors will stay home for your performance. But this particular protest was so shrewdly timed, so thematically linked, as to have rendered it impossible for the audience to ascertain whether it was part of the production or not. It’s tough...

Whether or not the climate activists who interrupted a critics’ preview of Broadway’s An Enemy of the People last week persuasively made their “water’s coming for us all” message isn’t for me to say, but I will note that the disruption spoke very well for this production.
Amy Herzog’s adaptation of Ibsen’s 1882 classic about a Norwegian town doctor deemed “an enemy of the people” for his truth-telling about an environmental health hazard is smart, sharp and relevant. The science vs. commerce debate is uncannily current, as Herzog thoughtfully makes clear. Ibsen created an archetypal situation here — I’d be willing to bet a trip to the beach that Peter Benchley was more than a little familiar with Enemy when he created that spineless, shark-denying mayor of Jaws, and if the activists at last week’s show hadn’t already seen a performance of this production,...

In a clever trick that pulls us into the community about to witness the spectacular downfall of the public figure crusading for truth at the center of An Enemy of the People, a bar descends from above during the pause between acts, with theatergoers filing onto the stage to be served shots of aquavit while musicians and singers perform traditional Norwegian songs. Several audience members stay seated around the periphery when the action resumes. The house lights also remain up, giving us no escape from our complicity as town physician Dr. Thomas Stockmann, played with bristling intensity by Jeremy Strong, is pilloried with ridicule that escalates into physical violence.
Sam Gold’s crackling production up to that point has been deceptively traditional, handsomely staged in the round at the Circle in the Square, with a first act that sets the scene for festering conflict in the warmth and cozy domesticity of Stockmann’s home,...

The White Lotus star Michael Imperioli showed off his improv skills on Thursday night when climate activists crashed a performance of Broadway’s An Enemy of the People. In the play — directed by Sam Gold and adapted by Amy Herzog from the original 1882 play by Henrik Ibsen — Imperioli’s Mayor Peter Stockmann tries to silence brother Dr. Thomas Stockmann (played by Succession star Jeremy Strong) when the latter discovers harmful bacteria in the town’s spas. And when activists from the group Extinction Rebellion interrupted Thursday’s performance of the play at New York City’s Circle in the Square Theatre, both Imperioli stayed in character, attempting to stifle the protests. #Breaking – Rebels disrupted #AnEnemyOfThePeople on #Broadway. #Climate activists aren't the enemy; it's fossil fuel criminals like Exxon & Chevron. Succession’s Sarah Snook is returning to the stage in London, and possibly Broadway, to take on an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a dark tale of a portrait that ages as its subject remains forever young.
The Emmy-nominated actress will have the gargantuan task of playing all 26 characters in Dorian Gray when it opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End in January 2024 for a limited 12-week season.
It’s a mammoth undertaking for a solo artist who will be required to be on stage for two hours without an interval.
The show was devised by Kip Williams, the artistic director of Australia’s celebrated Sydney Theatre Company. It premiered in Sydney with actress Eryn Jean Norvill creating the part — or parts, because there are 26 of them.
Those connected with it have described the show as “cine-theatre.”

It’s hard to say goodbye to an ensemble cast as talented as Succession’s. Even though we won’t get to see them perform together every week, at least we can find comfort in knowing that this isn’t the last time we’ll see these actors share their talents with the world. While many movie and TV productions are on hold right now due to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ (AMPTP) inability to meet the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) reasonable terms, there are still several upcoming projects featuring the incredibly skilled members of Succession, both on the stage and the screen, that are worth keeping an eye on.

Arian Moayed is perhaps best known for playing a slimy adviser to the powerful – and powerfully corrupt – billionaire Roy family on “Succession,” which earned him an Emmy Award nomination for guest actor in 2022. And he’s now nominated for his second Tony Award for playing one of theater’s most disdained patriarchs in “A Doll’s House” opposite Jessica Chastain.
But in reality, he might just be one of the nicest, most humane and well-liked guys in entertainment today – and he’s got the seems-to-be-everywhere working actor’s resume to prove it.
Starring in Amy Herzog’s revival of Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” as Torval, the sexist husband who ultimately sends his wife, Nora, out the door, Moayed manages to make himself not exactly likable, but somehow more understandable.

Having explored the darker side of corporate amorality and greed in “Succession,” Jeremy Strong will delve into a more small town version of corruption. The Emmy winner is set to star in a new Broadway production of “An Enemy of the People,” Henrik Ibsen’s classic story of a medical officer whose scientific findings leave him pushing to close the spa that is his community’s main source of economic life. It does not go well…
Well, at least that’s the story Ibsen spun. This time Amy Herzog, who recently brought a paired down version of Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” to Broadway, is adapting the story, so it could be quite different. Sam Gold, who has impressed and alternately alienated critics with his radical re-imaginings of “The Glass Menagerie” and “King Lear,” will direct. The production will premiere on Broadway in early 2024 at a theater to be announced.

Jessica Chastain was terrified to return to the stage.
Though the Academy Award-winner was trained at Juilliard and began her career in theater, with a staged reading of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé led by Al Pacino, she rejected any attempt to return to it in recent years. That is until she had lunch with director Jamie Lloyd (who also brought Betrayal to Broadway with Tom Hiddleston) and they eventually landed on the title of A Doll’s House and the lead role of Nora Helmer, which Lloyd assured Chastain she was more than capable of handling.

The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

“We’re going after so many deep truths,” reveals Arian Moayed of the current revival of “A Doll’s House.” Director Jamie Lloyd has staged Amy Herzog’s new adaptation on a mostly bare stage, with an ever rotating turntable. Moayed has discovered that the format leads to new surprises, and audience reactions, at every performance. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“It’s both completely new and completely difficult,” notes Moayed of the play’s stylized presentation. He portrays Torvald in the revival, the controlling husband to Nora (played by Oscar winner Jessica Chastain). Unlike a traditional staging where space is clearly defined, the actor cannot designate areas of the playing space for certain activities to give himself anchor points. “I am completely exposed to you,” he explains, “It really puts a lot of focus on us, making sure that we are connected just by our words.”

Henrik Ibsen’s world-(in)famous play “A Doll’s House” has not been seen on Broadway in over 25 years, when Janet McTeer led a production under the direction of Anthony Page. Now, into the shoes of legendary character Nora Helmer steps Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, starring in a work adapted by Pulitzer Prize-finalist Amy Herzog and directed by Tony Award nominee Jamie Lloyd. “A Doll’s House” opened March 9 at the Hudson Theatre and will play through June 10, just one day before the Tonys.
Joining Chastain in Ibsen’s form-defining domestic drama about the oppressive gender politics of the so-called private sphere in nineteenth-century Norway are Emmy nominee Arian Moayed as her husband Torvald, Okieriete Onaodowan as the opportunistic Nils Krogstad, Michael Patrick Thornton as the sympathetic Dr. Rank, Jesmille Darbouze as Nora’s old friend Kristine Linde, and Tasha Lawrence as the Helmers’ nanny.

‘A Doll’s House’ Theater Review: Jessica Chastain Blazes in Intensely Intimate Take on Ibsen Classic
Jessica Chastain is already seated onstage, in character as Nora Helmer, when the audience starts filing in for A Doll’s House. Looking every inch the gorgeous, troubled trophy wife in a period-nonspecific black dress, her expression a mask of numb absence, she circuits the stage over and over on a slow turntable. She will rarely leave that chair over the course of this transfixing slow-boil take on the landmark Ibsen drama, which builds a bridge between its original 1879 setting and the present day in Amy Herzog’s laser-focused new modern adaptation.
Mounted with daring austerity even by the usual pared-down standards of director Jamie Lloyd, the production finds scorching intensity in stillness. Simple wooden chairs — plus the wheelchair used by actor Michael Patrick Thornton, who plays sickly cynic Dr. Rank with delicious bone-dry affectlessness and simmering sexual tension — are the only scenic or prop elements in the stark playing space.

At more than a few points during Jamie Lloyd’s hypnotic Broadway revival of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, you could swear that stars Jessica Chastain and Succession‘s Arian Moayed are confiding in you, whispering their secrets to no one else. This stark, sometimes chilly production is an eavesdropper’s paradise, so intimate and conversational that all but the most guarded among us will be susceptible to its frequent enticements.
Perhaps “most guarded” isn’t fair. There are others who might resist the show’s languid entreaties. Any aversion to minimalism or even the vaguely avant-garde might spur disappointment in this production. There are no period costumes here, no homey 19th century furnishings or Christmas trees in sight. This Doll’s House, opening tonight at the Hudson Theatre, is as much suggestion as action, our main character seated in a chair throughout nearly all of the play, even when she dances.

A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Succession‘s Arian Moayed has extended its Broadway run by a week, and will now play through Saturday, June 10.

As Broadway moves toward its busy spring season, star power has returned to the Great White Way and boosted box offices in the process.
After making her Broadway debut in 2012, Jessica Chastain has returned to star as Nora Helmer in A Doll’s House. The classic Henrik Ibsen play, which was adapted by Amy Herzog and directed by Jamie Lloyd, began previews at the Hudson Theatre on Feb. 13 and has played to nearly full houses so far, minting a strong $811,261 in its first full week of performances.
The musical Parade, starring Ben Platt, began previews Feb. 21 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and played to more than 100 percent capacity (including standing-room tickets), bringing in just above $587,000 in its first four preview performances. This came as the revival — which chronicles the true story of a Jewish factory worker who was wrongly accused of murdering a teenage girl and then lynched by a...

Some recent Broadway arrivals added both star power and box office receipts to the weekly grosses reports, with both Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Parade selling out (the latter despite some loudmouthed neo-Nazi protesters), and A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella coming close.
The musical revival Parade, starring Ben Platt as Leo Frank and Micaela Diamond as wife Lucille Frank, played four preview performances last week – only one of which, the first, drew the antisemitic protesters – and was at standing room only, grossing $587,006 with an average ticket price of $143.24. The Alfred Uhry-Jason Robert Brown musical, directed by Michael Arden, opens at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on March 16.

We’re now about halfway through the 2022-23 Broadway season, and there are currently nine productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below is a plot overview of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, and creative teams, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Pictures From Home” (opens February 9; closes April 30)
This stage adaptation of Larry Sultan’s 1992 photo memoir is a comic and dramatic portrait of a mother and father, and the son who photographed their lives. As Larry tries to capture his parents, their reality explodes from the frame in an exploration of the power of art and how much it reveals.
Adapted for the stage by WGA nominee Sharr White, the production stars Tony winner Danny Burstein, three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane, and four-time Tony nominee Zoë Wanamaker.

With Jessica Chastain’s Golden Globes mask, the actress proved face-wear remains fashionable. But the Oscar winner said it was about more than just nailing her awards show look.
While speaking to E! News during their red-carpet pre-show Tuesday night, the George & Tammy star addressed her sparkling face mask, which matched her dress and was designed by Oscar de la Renta. Of her decision to wear the face covering, the actress expressed a little fear over attending the ceremony amid the ongoing spread of Covid-19 variants.
But she also revealed, while mentioning her upcoming lead performance in an update of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House for Broadway, that the mask was about more than alleviating personal concerns. “I’m a little nervous about getting sick. But, I got my mask,” she said. “You have to be so careful in the theater because I don’t want to let my cast down.
