- He was a prominent ethnomusicologist who traveled around the world to record Balinese gamelans, Peruvian pan pipers, and chanting Tibetan monks to build one of the world's biggest collections of international music. He worked with Nonesuch Records. Much of his work is archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington DC.
- He studied piano at Trinity College in London.
