Exclusive: Mammoth Pictures has inked a deal out of Cannes with the Bulgarian production company Bazuka to exclusively develop and produce a narrative feature take on the cultural tradition spotlighted in Kukeri, their documentary short produced for The New Yorker which was just unveiled at the beginning of the month. (View it above.)
Set to direct the as-yet-untitled new film, described as a folkloric horror thriller, is Mammoth’s Kourosh Ahari (Parallel).
Helmed by Killian Lassablière, the Bazuka doc spotlights an enigmatic Bulgarian tradition known as “Surva” that has united small villages across the country once a year for centuries — a festival that has residents known as “Kukeri” dress up in otherworldly costumes in the hopes of driving away evil spirits. The animalistic costumes, covering most of the body, are often made from the fur and skins of goats or sheep, and can also include toothed wooden masks — sometimes, peppered with horns,...

Author Nick Cutter’s novel The Deep was released back in 2015 (you can pick up a copy Here), and genre legends Clive Barker and Stephen King were among the readers who were shaken by the story. Barker said the book is “utterly terrifying”. King said The Deep “scared the hell out of me and I couldn’t put it down”, adding that the book was “old-school horror at its best”. Now Deadline reports that a series adaptation of the novel is in the works at Amazon Studios, with C. Henry Chaisson – whose credits include co-writing the screenplay for the horror film Antlers and writing a couple episodes of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced thriller series Servant – on board to write and executive produce.

Published in 2015 and notably praised by horror master Clive Barker, Nick Cutter‘s underwater horror novel “The Deep” is getting a series adaptation at Amazon, Deadline reports.
C. Henry Chaisson is writing the series for Amazon Studios.
Clive Barker called the novel “utterly terrifying.”
“Set in the near future, The Deep centers on a research station at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, where a miraculous discovery signals a new hope for humanity – but secrets unearthed on the ocean floor may hold devastating consequences for the world above.”
The book’s official synopsis reveals more about the storyline…
“A strange plague called the ‘Gets is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget—small things at first, like where they left their keys, then the not-so-small things, like how to drive or the letters of the alphabet. Their bodies forget how to function involuntarily. There is no cure.

Servant executive producer M. Night Shyamalan once said that his dream version of the Apple TV+ series would consist of sixty episodes, but he later whittled that number down, telling Uproxx that “I outlined the whole series over the pandemic and figured out where I wanted it to go and how many episodes it would be. And it came out to 40.” Each season of Servant consists of ten episodes, so it will be reaching Shyamalan’s goal of 40 at the end of season 4… and Apple TV+ has now confirmed that Servant season 4 is the “final chapter” of the show, which will bring viewers “an epic and emotional conclusion of the Turner story.” Along with that confirmation comes the unveiling of a teaser trailer, which you can see in the embed above, and some first look images, which can be found at the bottom of this article.

One of the most chilling shows on TV has a return date.
Apple TV+ today unveiled a first-look teaser at the third season of the acclaimed Servant.
The 10-episode third season will debut with the first episode on Friday, January 21, 2022, followed by one new episode weekly, every Friday.
From executive producer M. Night Shyamalan, Servant follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home.
The new episodes pick up three months after Servant Season 2, with Leanne struggling to come to terms with the fact that no one has come looking for her.
She believes they will come looking eventually, while the Turners want to raise Jericho and move on with their lives.
Unfortunately, the past always comes back to haunt the characters on this show, so it's going to be a complicated chain of events.

Before you begin to fill the candy bowls and light up the jack o’lantern, how about taking a terror trek to the “haunted” multiplex for a very modern take on the traditional “creature feature”? Yes, there’s a growling drooling mythical monster at the center of the story, though the town and its past are pretty scary without this “beastie”. Perhaps this is a result of the unique behind-the-scenes pairing of a producer known for his fantasy fright flicks and a director who’d helmed several films that deal with all-too-human horrors. Together this “mad move-scientist” duo have stitched together a shambling nightmare thing that threatens to impale several villagers on its razor-sharp Antlers.
This said nightmare actually begins during another overcast day, just outside a remote dying town in Oregon.

After being delayed due to the pandemic, Scott Cooper’s Antlers is finally arriving in theaters this Friday courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. Produced by Oscar winner and monster enthusiast Guillermo del Toro and co-written by Cooper, Nick Antosca (who wrote the short story that Antlers was based upon), and Henry Chaisson, Antlers transports viewers to an isolated Oregon town being terrorized by the legendary Wendigo, and a small boy named Lucas (played by Jeremy T. Thomas) at the center of it all. Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons co-star.
During a recent press day for Antlers, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Cooper about his latest directorial effort. During the interview, he discussed how the project came about through a call from Guillermo del Toro and how he wanted to approach the theme of trauma in the script for Antlers. Cooper also chatted about how Jeremy T. Thomas became...

As movie titles go, “Antlers” seems ready-made for one of two holidays — either Christmas or Halloween — and it’s kind of a shame to see it squandered on the latter. Now what is some enterprising filmmaker supposed to call his revisionist Rudolph story when the time comes? The name’s a somewhat less obvious fit for director Scott Cooper’s somber, character-centric stab at supernatural horror, although it makes sense once you realize that this slow-burn, Oregon-set monster movie is centered on the Native American “wendigo” legend, whereby an evil spirit possesses people and transforms them into deadly elk-horned creatures with an appetite for human flesh.
Cooper has dabbled in many a genre across his five-movie directing career, although there’s been a consistent darkness to it all that puts horror squarely in his wheelhouse. Executed with style and perhaps a bit too much self-importance, his work has traditionally focused...

Often we refer to the concept of family as the ties that bind, and for good reason. Because sometimes, our family can be the very thing in our lives that is either holding us down or they can keep us connected to some type of trauma that continues to haunt our very existence. That’s the primary theme that ripples throughout Scott Cooper’s Antlers, a harrowing, gut-punch creature feature that is shockingly bleak at times and features brilliant performances from Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, and the precocious Jeremy T. Thomas, who is at the center of Antler’s mystery and is so heartbreakingly great in this.

Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film Antlers stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons as a small town plagued by a mysterious monster.
Antlers will showcase an intriguing spin on horror film conventions, mixing the old “a boy and his monster” fantasy trope of Pete’s Dragon and Where the Wild Things Are with a voraciously deadly deer twist.
Guillermo del Toro serves as a producer for Antlers; a duty that, a few years back, saw him appoint Black Mass director Scott Cooper, who worked off a script that he co-wrote with C. Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca, adapting Antosca’s short story, The Quiet Boy. David Goyer and J. Miles Dale also serve as producers.
Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons headline here, joined by Jeremy T. Thomas, who plays a small-town kid with the most problematic secret buddy ever.

While filmmaker Scott Cooper has not previously made a horror film, the “Hostiles” and “Black Mass” director has long been enthralled with the darker side of the human spirit. Even his lightest film, the debut feature “Crazy Heart” (which earned Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar), was about a down and out musician attempting to turn his life around, away from the spotlight and all the booze that often accompanied it.
Cooper’s subsequent features have similarly delved into the rougher parts of the human condition, including gritty crime films like “Out of the Furnace” and the fact-based “Black Mass.” His most recent effort, the Christian Bale-starring “Hostiles,” was a grim exploration of life in the American West. Now, Cooper is turning his affection for dark material to a new genre, and he’s got the full force of producer Guillermo del Toro behind him.

Events take a dark turn for a small town school teacher, played by “The Americans'” Keri Russell, in the first teaser trailer for horror movie “Antlers,” produced by Guillermo del Toro.
The footage, unveiled Tuesday, centers on a young boy (Jeremy T. Thomas) reading from a frightening short story he’s written as Russell listens. The trailer includes images of a cabin with blood-splattered floors, otherworldly creatures and Russell screaming inside her car.
“Once, there were three bears that lived in a dark, wet cave up above a small town,” Thomas says. “Every day, Little Bear went to school, and at night he would come home and eat dinner. But, one day, Little Bear came home and Big Bear and Baby Bear were different. Big Bear got sick, and his insides turned black. Big Bear has become more angrier and meaner, because they had no food, no meat.”

Jesse Plemons is set to star along Keri Russell in the upcoming supernatural horror-thriller Antlers. The film is set up at Fox Searchlight and it's one of the projects that Guillermo del Toro set up to produce with David Goyer.
The movie is being directed by Scott Cooper, who previously worked with Plemons on Black Mass and Hostiles. We don't know who exactly Plemons is playing but the story follows a teacher (Keri Russell) "who takes an interest in a mysterious and withdrawn student. As they become closer, she discovers that the boy is harboring a secret that could have deadly consequences."
The script for the film was written by Nick Antosca and Henry Chaisson and it's based on Antosca’s short story "The Quiet Boy."
Plemons is currently filming Jungle Cruise opposite Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt and will next be seen in the Martin Scorsese gangster film The Irishman.

Having captured an Academy Award in the Best Achievement in Directing and Best Motion Picture categories earlier this year for his passion project, The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro isn’t interested in spending any time away from the world of cinema.
Recently acquired by Fox Searchlight, Antlers, written by Henry Chaisson and Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca, will see the director serve as a producer. It didn’t take long for del Toro to make his presence felt, either, appointing Black Mass and Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper to helm the supernatural horror.
In a recent sit-down with Collider, Cooper revealed that the project is inspired by a pair of the genre’s staples, John Carpenter’s Halloween and William Friedkin’s The Exorcist.

After Guillermo del Toro's big win at the Oscars for The Shape of Water, Fox Searchlight is so happy with their relationship with the filmmaker that they want to stay in business with him. They've signed an exclusive deal with him, and Searchlight is also going to start a new label that will serve as a place where Del Toro can write, direct, produce and curate new fantasy, horror, and sci-fi films.
The first project under this new label has also been announced. It's called Antlers and it tells the story of “an elementary school teacher who takes in a troubled student that harbors a mysterious family secret with deadly consequences."
Antlers is being directed by Scott Cooper (Hostiles) from a script written by Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca and Henry Chaisson. The movie is based on a short story called The Quiet Boy by Nick Antosca. Del Toro...

Fox Searchlight Pictures has signed an overall deal with Guillermo del Toro that covers live-action feature films to be written, produced, and/or directed by the filmmaker.
The company is also creating a new, soon-to-be-named label, which will serve as a home for projects in the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres, including those produced and curated by del Toro. The movies will be financed, marketed, and distributed by Fox Searchlight.
“For the longest time, I’ve hoped to find an environment in which I can distribute, nurture, and produce new voices in smart, inventive genre films and channel my own,” del Toro said. “In Fox Searchlight, I’ve found a real home for live-action production — a partnership based on hard work, understanding of each other and, above all, faith. After the wonderful experience I had with Fox Searchlight on ‘The Shape of Water,’ I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the relationship.

Fox Searchlight has made an overall deal with Guillermo del Toro. This comes after they teamed on the Best Picture-winning The Shape Of Water, the fantasy/love story that also won the Best Director prize for del Toro.
Fsl presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley, who bought that project from del Toro on a pitch, will host live action films that del Toro will write, produce and sometimes direct. A new film label is also part of the deal, where del Toro can percolate horror, sci-fi and fantasy genre projects. All the films will be financed, marketed and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures.
This is a bold step for Gilula & Utley at a time when all of Fox is dealing with uncertainty with the pending acquisition by Disney. Fsl certainly made a strong case for itself during Oscar season: The Shape of Water won four Oscars, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,...

Guillermo del Toro has jumped on board a couple new film projects since The Shape of Water landed seven Golden Globe nominations this week. The film projects are set up at Fox Searchlight and he's looking to produce one of them and co-write and direct the other.
The film he's producing is a supernatural film called Antlers, and the studio is currently in talks with Scott Cooper (Hostiles, Out of the Furnace, Black Mass) to direct it. Apparently, Del Toro is a fan of Cooper's work and has been wanting to work with him. This will definitely be a different kind of project for Cooper.
Antlers is based on a short story called "The Quiet Boy" by Antosca and the script was penned by Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca. The horror story follows "a young teacher who discovers that her troubled student’s father and younger brother harbor a deadly supernatural secret.
