Alex Newell, Once on This Island
Alex Newell and Hailey Kilgore. Joan Marcus
As Mother of the Earth in the revival of Once on This Island, Newell filled the Circle in the Square Theatre with his bombastic and vibrant performance of “Mama Will Provide.” It’s a show-stopping moment that literally brought audiences to their feet in rapturous applause. And his co-star, Hailey Kilgore, should not be overlooked. As Ti Moune, she carried the story about a peasant girl in love with a wealthy boy from one side of the island to the other and enjoyed her own standout moment, leading a rapturous dance during a ball scene. Seven shows a week, Bette Midler will play Dolly Gallagher Levi in the highly anticipated Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! at the Shubert Theatre starting March 15. (The show opens on April 20.)
On June 13, an eighth show on Tuesdays will be added, with Tony Award winner Donna Murphy stepping into the role originated by Carol Channing on Broadway in 1964, made famous onscreen by Barbra Streisand in 1969 and revived by Midler in 2017.
“I’ve never really done anything quite like this,” Murphy tells Et.
To clarify, she’s not serving as Midler’s understudy. “I am not someone who will go if [Midler] is not feeling well in an emergency situation,” she says. Instead, she is Midler’s Tuesday-night alternate, performing alongside the production’s other stars, David Hyde Pierce, Kate Baldwin and Gavin Creel. In addition to Tuesdays, the Broadway veteran will also step in during Midler’s scheduled vacation.

She’s lookin’ swell, fellas! Bette Midler’s anticipated Broadway revival of “Hello, Dolly!” broke the record for most first-day ticket sales for any Broadway show in history, totaling $9.08 million. Looks like Midler and the matchmaking Dolly are a match made in heaven. It was announced earlier this year that Midler will fill she shoes of Carol Channing (who won a Tony for originating the titular Dolly in 1964) and Barbra Streisand (who brought the role to the big screen in 1969) as the now-iconic matchmaker and New York socialite Dolly. Apparently we’re not the only ones who get giddy thinking about Midler bringing the house down with “When the Parade Passes By!” Under the direction of Jerry Zaks, Tony winner David Hyde Pierce will join Midler on the Shubert Theatre stage as Horace Vandergelder. It was announced last week that alongside this leading duo will be Kate Baldwin, Gavin Creel,...

A lot can change in three years. Back in 2013, when House of Cards launched, the very idea of a show streaming on Netflix, with all episodes erupting from the floodgates at once, seemed singularly odd. It’s hard to even get into that headspace in 2016. The service, for better or worse, has given its users a Pavlovian response to the consumption of its top-shelf programming: binge it soon, binge it fast, and get in on the conversation before it ends.
House of Cards is maybe the first actually great Netflix original series (sorry, Lilyhammer), the first to prove that a show didn’t have to be chintzy or overly soapy to get people to keep talking about it well past its debut. But, like Netflix’s effect on our TV culture, a lot has changed for House of Cards over three years, too.

Read More: Before 'House of Cards' Season 4, We Need to Talk About Doug The big finale of "House of Cards" Season 3 centered on the fractured relationship of the First Family, and the new trailer for the upcoming season wastes no time digging into the emotional complexity at hand. Clearly, Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Robin Wright) are still struggling to reconnect, which comes as no surprise when considering how strong-willed they both remain. Yet the Underwoods aren't the only characters on display in this 60-second spot. Kim Dickens returns as stalwart reporter Kate Baldwin, as does Russian President Petrov (Lars Mikkelsen) and Frank's right-hand man, Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly). Also highlighted are freshly added cast members Joel Kinnaman ("The Killing") and Neve Campbell ("Scream"), but what matters is that the short spot is packed with tantalizing clips. Netflix recently announced that this season will be the final one for creator and.
