Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the fourth and final season of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” now streaming on Disney+.
The Wildcats of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” have taken their final bow.
The Disney+ extension of the popular movie musical trilogy concluded this week with an eight-episode fourth season that found its cast performing a stage — or rather, basketball court — production of 2008’s “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.” Members of that film’s original cast returned to East High to shoot the fictional “High School Musical 4: The Reunion.”
Although the original films have had a presence since the pilot episode — the series is set at the high school where the films were shot — the final season is the show’s most meta endeavor yet.
“I think that’s one reason we wrapped up the show, or why I wanted to wrap up the show,...

Class divides have plagued us almost since the dawn of civilization, since the very first groups of humans separated themselves according to the haves and have-nots. From the caveman with the biggest stick to the CEO with the largest bank account, things really haven't changed all that much. In the 2022 dark comedy "The Menu," those who have spent their whole lives in servitude finally get a chance to turn the tables in a truly bizarre tableau.
In the film, directed by Mark Mylod, a group of wealthy, privileged diners visit an exclusive island restaurant called Hawthorne for a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience. The whole meal is planned in advance from start to finish (no substitutions) and has a story that goes along with it, all created by the eccentric but brilliant Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes in a brilliant performance). Slowik uses the evening as a way to punish his guests, his employees,...

HBO Max has cooked up a slate of several classic films as well as a few newer ones arriving this January. “The Menu” (2022) arrived early in the month after releasing theatrically in November before Thanksgiving. Danny DeVito’s “Matilda” (1996) can contend with Netflix’s new movie musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. And while Tom Hanks’ latest role “A Man Called Otto” has hit the box office, several of his films have landed at various streamers if you’re hankering for more after the tear-jearking feature film.
Hitting the sweet spot for dog movie lovers is “Marley and Me,” starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, and the animated wonder “The Book of Life” is also newly added.
Here are some of the best new movies to stream on HBO Max in January 2023.

Searchlight Pictures gave their darkly comedic psychological thriller The Menu a theatrical release last month (you can read our review Here and watch our interview with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult Here), and it has been more successful than I would have expected it to be. It has earned more than 59 million at the worldwide box office. And next month, it’s heading into viewers’ homes. The Menu will be receiving a digital release on January 3rd, with a Blu-ray release to follow on January 17th.

The Menu is a comedy horror movie directed by Mark Mylod, starring Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Fiennes’ performance and the photography save the day in this film as the story at all times maintains a freezing distance to its characters. If that is deliberate or not, will remain a mystery.
Premise
Chef extraodinaire, Julian Slowik, offers a six course dinner at his secluded restaurant to select patrons.
Movie Review
With its pristine photography, and the superb performances, especially by Ralph Fiennes, this horror/thriller, with very faint hints of dark comedy, is visually impressive but does not quite get under one’s skin. It is as cold as the characters in the story.
The Menu (2022)
It is unpleasant by nature – being the thriller/horror movie it is – and the few humorous interjections, while funny, are as cynical as can be, making one laugh but not feel too good about it.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars alongside Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult in The Menu, a film from director Mark Mylod (“Succession”) that was released in theaters over the weekend.
Released into 3,211 theaters, The Menu ate up 9 million domestically in its debut weekend, with the darkly comedic horror movie debuting to 15.2 million at the worldwide box office.
The Menu gave Searchlight Pictures its biggest opening weekend since Slumdog Millionaire (’08), and it’s currently #2 on the domestic charts behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Meagan wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even with bursts of shocking violence, there’s a restraint to the horror and madness. The wit, humor, style, and performances ultimately serve tasty morsels worth savoring. The pacing is as methodical as Chef Slowik’s meal, which means it has a way of dragging on a bit too long without fully satiating.”

Sunday Writethru after Saturday Update: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s second weekend is coming in lower than its projected 70M+ with 67.3M, -63. That’s not necessarily something to get worried about, however, as sources keep telling me this pic’s running time is what’s slowing it down a bit. At the same time, that second weekend is slightly ahead of Black Adam‘s 67M opening weekend.
On the bright side, it’s Thanksgiving week, and if people aren’t seeing Wakanda Forever this weekend, then they’re making an appointment to see it sometime this week, hands down. Furthermore, there was always bound to be a steep drop in the Friday-to-Friday coming off the Veterans Day holiday and previews a week ago, that number being -79 for 17.9M Friday.

What should be a most divine dining experience for 11 individuals turns into a night of unexpected terror in Searchlight Pictures’ The Menu. The R-rated film from director Mark Mylod (Game of Thrones) is a dark, sharply crafted horror comedy with a wonderful ensemble cast.
The movie kicks off with the introduction of two of the diners – Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) – waiting on a dock to board a boat that will take them to a remote island. Their destination: Hawthorne, an exclusive restaurant that charges 1,250 a plate and promises to be worth every dollar.
Nine other guests join them onboard the boat including a past-his-prime movie star (John Leguizamo) and his lovely assistant (Aimee Carrero), Lillian; a pretentious food critic (Janet McTeer) and her brown-nosing editor (Paul Adelstein); Anne...

Reservations at Hawthorne are notoriously hard to get. It only seats 12 guests (at 1250 a head) and does a single multi-course dining service per evening. Located on an island that also houses the staff and provides the bulk of the ingredients, it’s considered the best dining experience in the country, possibly even the world. And the chef, well…Chef Julian Slowik’s reputation as a culinary artist, an innovator and a perfectionist precedes him. Walk through the doors of this dining room, with its exposed kitchen and gorgeous views of...

Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy headline this blackly comic satire about an acclaimed chef who gives a group of pretentious diners their just desserts. Essentially, it’s a one-joke movie, but it’s such a beautifully delivered, carefully constructed joke that it deserves to be savoured.
The Menu opens on Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), a self-described foodie who has forked out £1200 a head in order to attend an exclusive dining experience on a remote island, with a menu prepared by revered chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). Tyler’s date, Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) does not share his enthusiasm for the culinary delights, but she’s come along for the ride anyway.

“What are we eating? A Rolex?”
So quips Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Mark Mylod’s “The Menu” as she waits with her date, Tyler (Nicholas Hoult), a devoted foodie who has landed them a reservation at the exclusive restaurant Hawthorne. Like the opening of Rian Johnson’s upcoming “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” an eclectic, upscale bunch gathers eagerly on a dock to be ferried to a private island.
The movie, like their meal, unfolds as a series of courses, each more elaborate, and sinister, than the last. This is such rarified haute cuisine that entrees are promised that will not just represent food realms like protein and fungi but “entire ecosystems.” A paired pinot wine is said to feature “a faint sense of longing and regret.” Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), Hawthorne’s celebrity chef, presides over the restaurant less like a cook than a military commander or, possibly,...

Plot: A young couple (Nicholas Hoult & Anya Taylor-Joy) visit an ultra-exclusive restaurant on a secluded island run by a chef (Ralph Fiennes) whose staff has a cult-like devotion to their genius boss.
Review: The Menu was precisely the kind of black-hearted, cynical satire I needed at this midway point at the Toronto International Festival. When you’re watching movie after movie, it’s sometimes easy for one’s eyes to glaze over a bit, but The Menu is an energetic blast that will make even the most cynical audience member wince. It’s a delightfully-squirm inducing satire of wealth and haute-cuisine, with several Grand Guignol moments that even inch it towards the horror genre.
It’s brilliantly written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy and sharply directed by Succession‘s Mark Mylod. Anya Taylor-Joy grounds the film as Margot, a young woman enlisted to join the 1200 a head dinner at the last moment.

Nicholas Hoult (The Great) did a deep dive into the world of foodies to prepare for Searchlight Pictures’ twisted horror comedy The Menu. Hoult plays one of the guests at an exclusive – and isolated – restaurant who discovers his delicious meal comes at a higher price than anticipated.
“It was very difficult because I had to eat at nice restaurants and watch lots of food shows,” said Hoult, laughing. “It was one of those amazing things that the more of Chef’s Table I watched, the more that I was in awe and amazed by these singular-minded, dedicated chefs who committed their whole lives to their craft. And then I was starstruck because Dominique Crenn, who was the food advisor on the movie and designed the menu, she was on set one day and I’d seen her episode and I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s her!’

20th Century Studios has been low-key delivering some of the most consistent genre entertainment over the last several years. "Ready or Not," "Barbarian," "No Exit," and "Prey" all serve as excellent examples. Oddly enough, this has all coincided with Disney's purchase of Fox, even though many of the movies in question were in the works before that deal took place. And the hot streak is set to continue as "The Menu" -- which hails from the studio's Searchlight Pictures division -- makes its way to theaters this weekend.
I was lucky enough to see the film at Fantastic Fest and, in one man's humble opinion, I think it absolutely rules. The trailers have been keeping many secrets but, very basically, the film centers on a couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) who travel to an isolated island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the acclaimed chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu.

If you’re someone who considers themself a foodie (and I totally am), chances are there was a moment in the last few years when you had The Awakening. It may have been when the waiter was describing the veal marrow with beet foam served with baby lettuces from New Zealand. It may have been when you were eating the red snapper that was cooked halfway through, like a rare steak, and you thought, “I love sushi, I love cooked fish, but I’m not sure this is really the best of both worlds.” It may have been when you saw the bill.
Whatever the trigger, that was the moment you looked up from your plate and realized that high-end foodie culture has become a serious annoyance. It’s gotten too fussy, too pricey, too full of itself, too not filling, too avant-garde and conceptual, too tied to The Salvation of the Planet,...

Now a new poster for The Menu has arrived online, and this one features both Taylor-Joy and Fiennes, as well as Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) and several other cast members. Hawthorn is an epicurean’s wet dream. To dine at this restaurant, around which Mark Mylod’s stylishly directed feature The Menu revolves, one must make a reservation several months in advance and fork over 1,250 per person. The eatery is run by stern, world-renowned Chef Slowik (played with quiet severity by Ralph Fiennes) and is located on a remote island somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Their tasting menu changes seasonally, based on both the whims of its progenitor and the land. The restaurant only seats a dozen people. There are no cellphones allowed. They do not take solo diners.
What kind of person wants — or more accurately can afford — to dine at this fine establishment? The filthy rich, of course — the self-absorbed and ghoulish figures for whom it’s impossible to summon an ounce of good will. The Menu gorges on the blunders...

Director Mark Mylod and writers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy carefully construct a multi-course fine dining tasting menu of satirical delights and frights in The Menu. While the sophisticated and dry horror-comedy tantalizes with a feast for the senses and a compelling ensemble cast, The Menu‘s satire lacks bite.
Obsessed foodie Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) finally secured a coveted spot at the exclusive Hawthorne Island dining experience run by prestigious Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). The limited seating gets filled by billionaires, renowned food critics, and actors that don’t even bat an eye at the hefty price tag for haute cuisine. But then Tyler swaps in Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) as his last-minute plus one, creating a slight hiccup in the carefully curated menu for the evening. Only Margot seems capable of seeing beneath Chef’s pomp and circumstance to recognize a far more insidious game afoot.

Root Letter’s main story involves a relationship between pan pals. I guess in case some people don’t know ‘pen pals’ are two people that stay in touch and generally become friends via the use of written letters. I think between the ages of about 11 and 13 I had a pen pal who I would eventually meet in person once and we first wrote to each other through the pages of a video game magazine. What’s on the menu for Adam McKay’s next dark comedy?
Following Oscar-nominated “Don’t Look Up,” mega-producer McKay turns his attention to the elite culinary world with “The Menu,” from “Succession” director and executive producer Mark Mylod. The film is set to be released in theaters November 18 from Searchlight Pictures, setting “The Menu” up for a potential Oscar play.
Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult star as a young couple who visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island to indulge in a lavish tasting menu, prepared by a famed chef (Ralph Fiennes). The cast includes Alice Kremelberg (“The Sinner”), Donald Paul (“Queen of the South”), and Mark St. Cyr (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”). The series was nominated for the 2021 Daytime...
