A longtime actor on television and stage, over the past six years George Takei has become a star of a new medium: social media. Through Facebook and Twitter, the 79-year-old actor -- most notable for his years as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek and its subsequent films -- has become known for his memes and wit, but also, lately, his social activism. Using the platforms on which he’s cultivated an engaged audience, Takei has been able to defend Nina Davuluri from racist commentary after she was named Miss America 2014 and raise money to fund a web series addressing the Boy Scouts’ (now former) anti-gay policies. Lately, he’s become more outspoken, defending millions of Americans from President Donald Trump, who Takei believes is acting out in fear.
“That fear comes from the fact that he’s uninformed,” Takei tells Et as hundreds of thousands of Americans have responded to the actor’s Care2 petition calling...

First comes the crown...then comes the criticism. Just over one week after Miss New York Kira Kazantsev took home the highly coveted title of Miss America 2014 at the annual beauty pageant, the 23-year-old blonde bombshell is already facing backlash. A report surfaced today claiming that the aspiring law student was kicked out of the Alpha Phi sorority at Hofstra University on Long Island for hazing pledges, where, at the time, she was reportedly serving as her sorority's head of recruitment. But don't expect the negative media buzz to become a pageant scandal, as the Miss America Organization has released a statement in defense of the newly crowned beauty...

There she is, Miss America. Miss New York Kira Kazantsev came out on top Sunday night, taking home the beauty pageant's tiara after showcasing her beauty, brains and very hip talent. Here are five things to know about the 23-year-old stunner: 1. She's living the American dream. Kazantsev is the daughter of Russian immigrants who moved to the United States from Moscow before she was born. Though she represented New York in the pageant, she was raised all across the country, from San Francisco to San Antonio. "Living in different places gave me perspective on what matters most: people," she says in an Overture video.

On the night of Sept. 14, some Americans expressed their patriotism by cheering as the Chicago Bears mauled the San Francisco 49ers. More refined types took in the first episode of Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts: An Intimate History on PBS. The classiest nationalists of all forewent TV entirely, choosing instead to read the Constitution by candlelight while listening to the collected works of John Philip Sousa and supping on a freshly roasted bald eagle.
But those of us who really know what these United States are all about spent the evening watching the unique ridiculosity that is the Miss America pageant on ABC.

Miss Delaware Amanda Longacre has filed a $3 million lawsuit against the Delaware pageant officials and Miss America after she was stripped of her crown for being too old.
Amanda Longacre: Too Old For Miss Delaware
In late June, Longacre, 24, was stripped of her Miss Delaware title after officials realized that she would turn 25 before the end of the year, which is against official pageant rules.
Longacre lost her title and any contracted appearances, and will not be able to compete for the title of Miss America. And officials crowned runner-up Brittany Lewis the new Miss Delaware. Longacre did get to keep her scholarship prize, but that didn’t ease the sting.
“I am so, like, really upset because I just found out Tuesday that I was stripped of my crown over an age clause that clearly the board of my state didn’t even know about. So I am left...

A teenage boy in York, Penn. faced the ultimate rejection when he asked Miss America winner Nina Davuluri to prom. He didn’t get the girl – and his high school suspended him for even asking her. Ouch.
Davuluri, who won the 2014 Miss America crown this past September, went to Central York High School April 17 to give a presentation. That’s when the bold Patrick Farves gifted her a flower and asked her to the dance.
Some members of the high school’s administration found out about Farves’ plan before he went ahead with it and warned him not to do it.

Patrick Farve, a York, Pa., high school student, was given three days of suspension after asking Miss America Nina Davuluri to accompany him to prom.
Teen Suspended For Asking Miss America To Prom
Farve, 18, stepped up to participate in a question-and-answer session that Davuluri was participating in at his high school. Instead of asking about her Miss America work, the teenager decided to try his luck and ask Davuluri, 25, to his senior prom. Davuluri laughed it off, Farve’s classmates applauded – but school administrators were devising a punishment.
Apparently Farve had been warned ahead of time that asking such a question would earn him some form of punishment. Despite the alleged warning, people on social media have taken to the teen’s defense, challenging administrators for their harsh punishment for the ultimately harmless act. At one point, “#freepatty” was trending on Twitter.
