Lionsgate is thinking about making “lower-budget” movies for Starz as the TV streaming and linear network is set to split with Lionsgate Studios by the end of the year.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we also made some lower budget movies specifically for Starz,” said CEO Jon Feltheimer on a post-earnings call. “And we’re talking about that and thinking about the calculus for how that works.”
Talking about Lionsgate theatrical output – from big swings to the many smaller films on its slate that he said generate 90% returns, Feltheimer noted that “at the end of the day, we take all that product, all that product, and all that huge investment, and it goes all into the library. And the new stuff drives the old stuff” in a virtuous circle.
“We’ve got a really a great ecosystem, whether we’re the same company or whether we’re two companies.

Kino Lorber has picked up U.S. rights to Johan Grimonprez’s Sundance-winning documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, which traces how the U.S. used “Jazz Ambassadors” like Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and Duke Ellington, to build goodwill during the Cold War all while orchestrating clandestine operations to destabilize the Congo.
Kino Lorber will partner with specialist streamer Kanopy on the U.S. release of the film. Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat marks Lorber’s second collaboration with Grimonprez following their 2010 release of his hybrid doc-drama Double Take, which stitches together clips from Alfred Hitchcock’s films and TV work, together with 50s news footage and commercials, to tell a fictional story of Cold War paranoia.

Doug Belgrad is joining Netflix as Vice President of Film. He’s Dan Lin’s first hire after Lin replaced Scott Stuber and laid off a bunch of staff. Stuber courted top filmmakers for years with hopes Netflix would embrace theatrical releases. We’ve heard rumors of buyer regret as films like Knives Out: Glass Onion sacrificed chances for big international grosses and went straight to streaming. No one can feel sorry, given the size of that deal, but streaming strategies are changing. Netflix is moving forward with a clearer mandate to make its movie slates specifically for its vast streaming audience, with platform releases happening only for films Netflix wants to qualify for awards consideration.
Belgrad spent 25 years, and was co-president under Amy Pascal. Upon exiting, he formed 2.0 Entertainment, and produced Gran Turismo and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die.

Law & Order Svu did a lot for Ice-t’s acting career when casting him on the show way back in 1999. But it was a good thing Ice-t was cast in his more mature years. If he was approached for the show when he was younger, he might’ve turned it down.

Ice-t is one of Svu‘s veterans, having been a part of the show from the beginning. Acting wasn’t anything new to Ice-t when he was first approached for the project. But the series’ creator Dick Wolf was concerned Ice-t would have issues with playing a police officer.
“When Dick Wolf put me on the show, he said, ‘Ice, you don’t like the cops, do you?’ I said, ‘Not all of ‘em. I ain’t got problems. Some of ‘em are cool.

The chants and shouts of pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the entry to the Washington Hilton for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, but once inside, attendees were greeted with what has become the usual scene: Celebrities on the red carpet, a crush for the security line and glitterati packed into a cavernous ballroom.
“I want to thank my wife for enduring lots of jokes and for agreeing to individually meet everyone in this room right after the ceremony,” the evening’s featured entertainer, Colin Jost, quipped about Scarlett Johansson, who posed for photos with a non-stop stream of attendees. She continued to do so later in the evening, at the Comcast-nbcu after party at the French ambassador’s residence.

Jo Ann Ross, the first woman to run a broadcast TV network’s ad-sales efforts and one of the last senior ad-sales executives in the TV industry to hold direct relationships with advertisers when primetime broadcast programs were seen as the primary venue for Madison Avenue’s dollars, is leaving the industry, stepping down from her role as chairman of Paramount Global’s ad sales division at the end of April.
Ross had already stepped back from day to day duties, ceding that role to John Halley, who was named president of ad sales for the company in 2022. But her relationships with key sponsors were seen as valuable, as were the ties many of her senior executives had with media agencies and marketing executives. "The Blair Witch Project" wasn't the first found footage horror film, but it is largely responsible for the explosion in found footage horror films over the last 25 years. A big reason for that? The numbers. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, "Blair Witch" was shot over just eight days with an initial outlay of just $35,000. It was bought by Artisan Entertainment for $1 million, and the studio spent around $6-8 million marketing it (per The Hollywood Reporter). The movie went on to gross more than $248 million at the box office.
It's a studio executive's dream to land a project like that, and studios have been chasing the high of "The Blair Witch Project" ever since. There have been two "Blair Witch" movie sequels, with another "reimagining" recently announced by Blumhouse and Lionsgate. There have been books, comic books, and video games. How does a fight between a group of teenagers result in murder?
Hulu’s new true-crime series “Under the Bridge,” based on the late Rebecca Godfrey’s non-fiction book, portrays the before and after of 14-year-old Reena Virk’s brutal murder. The first two episodes, released on April 17, show the timeline of events leading up to Virk’s death and the investigation that took place.
The show, created by Quinn Shephard, tells the story of the events that unfolded through the lens of Godfrey (Riley Keough), a journalist who grew up in Victoria and was working on a novel about teenage girls in her hometown when she found out about the murder, and Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone), a local police officer who investigated and solved the case.
Godfrey told Interview Magazine in 2019 how she became involved in the show. “I was living in New York City. This would’ve been in the late 90s,...

Match #1: Noam Dar def. Dijak The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The numbers game of the Meta-Four proved dividends for Noam Dar as Supernova 11 conquered the much larger Dijak thanks to Lash Legend, Jakara Jackson, and Oro Mensah. Dijak laid into the Scottish Superstar, crushing him with brutal chops, strong strikes, and back-breaking tosses across the ring. Dar was even on the receiving end of a ring-shaking sit-out chokeslam. Dar managed to rally and hit a Fisherman Buster on the larger Dijak, parlaying that move into an armbar that incapacitated his arm. After trading incredible shots, Dijak became distracted by Mensah who jumped on the apron, allowing Dar to hit Nova Roller to pick up the huge win.
My Score: 3.5 out of 5 Match #2: Lola Vice def.

Welcome to this week’s review of Nxt, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…
Match #1: Axiom & Nathan Frazer def. Edris Enofé & Malik Blade The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Even though the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic has concluded, Axiom and Nathan Frazer are still teaming together and picked up a big win over Edris Enofé and Malik Blade. The action was fast and furious as all four Superstars showed off their incredible athleticism, punctuated by a Spanish Fly/Phoenix Splash combo from Axiom and Frazer. After Blade wiped out on the outside, Enofé was left all alone in the ring where Frazer hit another Phoenix Splash followed by a Golden Ratio from Axiom to give them the win.
My Score: 4 out of 5 Match #2: Lexis King def. Riley Osborne The following is courtesy of wwe.

The team of Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker managed to put their differences aside to win the 2024 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic by defeating Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams in the Finals. Breakker and Corbin were Superstars on a mission, using their power to dominate early with Breakker even launching his teammate over the top rope right onto Trick Melo Gang. A pair of influential executives at Philippine content company Abs-cbn have passed away.
Former Vice-Chairman Jake Almeda Lopez and Roldeo ‘Deo’ Endrinal, who ran Abs-cbn’s entertainment and telenovela production division Dreamscape Entertainment, both died this week. Lopez was 95, while Endrinal was 60.
The network issued separate statements of remembrance for both Lopez and Endrinal, while many local Filipino stars and industry professionals have shared their condolences and tributes on social media.
For Lopez, who fought for the country during World War II before joining the network in 1961, Abs-cbn wrote: “Abs-cbn mourns the loss of our esteemed Vice Chairman and pillar, Atty. Jake Almeda Lopez. A decorated war veteran, he dedicated many years to building and rebuilding Abs-cbn alongside our founder, Kapitan Geny Lopez, who described him as the ‘soul’ of our organization.

Match #1: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Trick Melo Gang def. The Lwo The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams are officially headed to Nxt Vengeance Day as they defeated Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro of The Lwo in the Semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Wilde and Del Toro were on their A-game early on and even managed to hit a tandem splash to the outside, but their amazing offense wasn’t enough to spoil Trick Melo Gang’s night. The Lwo had all of the momentum, but a missed splash by Del Toro opened the door in a big way as Trick nailed a running knee to send his team to Vengeance Day.

Park Ki-yong is to step down as chairperson of the Korean Film Council (Kofic) and revealed he will make a return to filmmaking to help the country’s film industry “regain its form”.

As a result, the government-funding support and promotion agency will operate under an ‘acting system’ until the next chairperson is elected, led by Kofic vice chairperson Kim Seonah.
