Jim Packer, president of worldwide television distribution at Lionsgate, is betting the upcoming spin off of his Hollywood studio’s film and TV production and library business will become a franchise machine.
“It’s clear it’s going to be an IP-focused company. It’s going to produce, distribute, film and TV,” Packer told the Gabelli Media & Entertainment Symposium during a session that was webcast. He pointed to the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and set for an April 2025 release.

Lionsgate’s free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channel MovieSphere will become the first of its kind to be measured by Nielsen Media Research, the companies announced on Tuesday.
The deal comes at a time when more consumers are opting for Fast services and channels to fulfill their entertainment needs, but that switch has been made without many measurement solutions in place to accurately gauge how often those products are used.
The lack of independent measurement data against Fast content streams means marketers aren’t always able to gauge the effectiveness of their campaigns. Lionsgate says they’re closing that gap by bringing “proven linear TV metrics to the Fast space.”
“Nielsen is providing us with a valuable and innovative tool to benchmark performance, evaluate what’s working and respond quickly to our audience,” Jim Packer, the President of Lionsgate’s Worldwide TV Distribution, said in a statement.

Nielsen, the long-time arbiter of ratings on traditional TV, is getting into the ad-supported streaming game.
The company has struck a deal with Lionsgate to provide measurement for the studio’s MovieSphere Fast channel. Both sides are touting the agreement as a first for a “major” Fast outlet as the free, ad-supported streaming market continues to grow.

“The Conners” is making its way to off-net syndication, as Tom Werner’s Werner Entertainment has stuck a deal with both Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group and Debmar-Mercury to distribute the sitcom’s first five seasons (and future seasons as well). “The Conners” will be sold for a fall 2024 launch in domestic syndication.
Under the deal, Lionsgate’s Worldwide Television Distribution Group will oversee international distribution, including SVOD, AVOD, basic cable and Fast rights, while Debmar-Mercury (which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lionsgate) will handle domestic syndication.

While Eli Roth has long enjoyed provoking audiences with his horror films, he’s found no such satisfaction in the case of his latest feature Fin, which documents a real-life nightmare.
Roth’s first documentary spotlights industries that are leading to the death of more than 100,000,000 sharks each year, and could very possibly bring about their extinction. To bring his story of global scale to life, he traveled the world for five years, placing his lens on the mass slaughter of sharks by illegal fin traders, shark killing tournaments and others.
Roth’s aim with Fin was to dispel the notion that sharks are monsters, and to accentuate their importance to the well-being of the planet, as a whole. Since making it, he’s continued to advocate on the creatures’ behalf, getting a major shark tournament in Fairhaven, Ma cancelled, with the help of his social media followers.

Mipcom – the largest international TV market – is changing fast and buyers and sellers are figuring out how to respond to the ever-shifting global landscape.
The corporate consolidation that has been the talk of the Croisette for the last few years has started to have a real-world impact on the distribution business, while the evolution of the streaming services means there are more complex negotiations taking places than ever before. Then there is the changing face of the market itself, which is now a separate market to its April sibling Mip TV.
Comcast’s NBC Universal Global Distribution has finally subsumed Catherine The Great distributor Sky Vision, Disney has brought 20th Century Fox Television Distribution into its beachside tent, while this market is likely to be one of the last where CBS Studios International and Viacom International Media Networks have separate booths and teams.

A keynote speaker at Hong Kong’s FilMart this week, Jim Packer, Lionsgate’s president of worldwide TV and digital distribution, shares plans to support Starz’ international expansion. And he recounts his experience of watching Netflix change up through the gears.
Back in 2012, when Lionsgate was still casting “Orange is the New Black,” Jim Packer, Lionsgate’s president worldwide TV and digital distribution, described the show’s buyer Netflix as “a great new digital partner.” Seven years later, Netflix is the platform everyone wants to work for and everyone else wants to beat.
“Netflix is no longer new, but they remain a trusted partner. They have such a huge appetite. And they are very easy to do business with,” said Packer. “But they have disrupted a lot of business models.”
“I did licensing deals with them when I was at MGM. They initially said we just want to buy your back catalog.

When FilMart was launched 22 years ago, Hong Kong boasted of its historic role as the preeminent gateway between China and the rest of the world. That message has had to be tempered in recent years as multiple other cities have emerged with claims to be hubs, and there is now huge direct trade between suppliers and end users. But Hong Kong’s traditional strengths — a free port, the rule of law, stable currency, low tax and excellent infrastructure — have helped it survive as it weathers commercial change.
Hong Kong’s FilMart has also navigated tumultuous changes on its way to becoming the premier film and TV rights market in Asia.
The emergence of mainland Chinese companies as major buyers, sellers and co-production partners in global film and TV fueled the market’s growth and a measure of stability for many years.
