It is 36 years since RoboCop blasted its way onto UK cinema screens and made a splash of epic, gruesome, proportions. With that a cult-like following is born and the film’s influence cannot be overstated.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is an incredibly methodical ‘making of’ documentary that has now set the standard and an exceptionally high one, no less. It comes as no surprise with the success of their recent projects which include Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story and Pennywise: The Story of It.
The documentary oozes passion and is testament to its directors Christopher Griffiths and Eastwood Allen clear love for the film in a project that has been over seven years in the making.
This four part series spans over more than four hours is nothing short of a triumph, it is forensic in its analysis and brings to life the chaos of the RoboCop shoot and does so brilliantly.

Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

Happy #RobertEnglundDay!
About one third of the 150+ acting credits accumulated over the course of Robert Englund’s 50-year career fall under the horror genre. Screambox is streaming five of them, along with the all-new documentary, Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.
Here are six Robert Englund movies you can watch on Screambox now…
Galaxy of Terror
Before moving to Elm Street, Englund went to space for 1981’s Galaxy of Terror, the first of two back-to-back Alien knock-offs produced by Roger Corman. The film follows a ragtag spaceship crew on a rescue mission to a barren planet, where they encounter a deadly creature. In a slight twist on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic, Galaxy of Terror uses its victims’ own fears against them — which, incidentally, is similar to Freddy’s modus operandi.

In making a documentary about a beloved actor like Robert Englund—most famous for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise— a major dilemma for the filmmakers has to be how to balance presenting the information people want with making a good movie.

Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story picks up with a 12-year-old Robert being sent to theatre camp getting attention from girls and being complimented by talk show host Steve Allen. That, especially the female attention, pointed him toward his career. And really, what better motivation can a young man have?
Best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Robert Englund already had a long history in the genre. dating back to Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive in 1976. Who could forget his entrance announcing “My name’s Buck, and I’m here to fuck!” and the criminally underrated Dead and Buried in 1981 as well as Galaxy of Terror and a host of others. And it’s continued well past his time as Freddy, most recently doing voice acting in the bizarre puppet film Abruptio.

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards 2023 streamed live on Shudder last night – if you missed the show, you can watch it right now! – honoring the best in horror from the past year.
While the Academy Awards may have ignored 2022’s best horror, including The Black Phone, Prey, and Nope, the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards once again served as horror’s own celebration of another incredible year for the genre. And Bloody Disgusting/Cinedigm are thrilled to report that our movies took home Chainsaw Awards in five different categories this year!
Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2 was the biggest winner of the night, winning a whopping four Chainsaw Awards. Horror fans selected Terrifier 2 as the Best Limited Release Movie of 2022, while the film also won for Best Makeup FX and Best Kill. The latter award was won for the gruesome bedroom kill of Allie, a new high water mark for practical gore effects.

A year ago, we heard that filming had wrapped on the documentary Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story, which – as you may have guessed from the title – chronicles the life and career of iconic actor Robert Englund. A few months ago, we learned that Cinedigm has packed up the North American distribution rights to the documentary, and the expectation was that they would be releasing it sometime around Englund’s birthday on June 6th. As it turns out, that is the exact date they’re going to be releasing it. Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story will be getting a digital release and will also be available to watch on the Bloody Disgusting streaming service Screambox on June 6th. Now that we know the release date, a trailer for the documentary has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Exclusive: Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop.
The project, six years in the making, is set to launch on Cinedigm’s horror streaming service Screambox and then on digital platforms early next year.
Featuring new interviews with cast and crew, including stars Dr Peter Weller, Diane Robin, Ronny Cox, Nancy Allen, Ray Wise, and director Paul Verhoeven, the series deep-dives on the story behind the franchise and its creation. The film is a fan-funded project that began raising money six years ago.
Action franchise RoboCop burst onto the scene in the late 1980s. Released at the time by Orion Pictures, it was set in a dystopian and crime-ridden Detroit and follows a terminally wounded cop who returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. The original, which took more than 50M off an estimated 13M budget, spawned two sequels and a 2014 remake.

I’ll be honest right from the start. I’m not a huge fan of the original It TV movie. I would have been seven when it was originally shown and I obviously knew about it or had at least seen the Tim Curry Pennywise image many times as I grew up, but it wasn’t until I was about thirty years old that I bought the DVD and gave it a watch. I think without nostalgia, it doesn’t hit quite the same and, for me at least, the first part of the remake blows it away. But the original has such a following and has such a cultural significance that it’s a very important movie for the horror genre.
Maybe unsurprisingly it’s...

Screambox original documentary Pennywise: The Story of It uncovered a wealth of insight into the 1990 Stephen King adaptation. Five years of work from co-directors John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser) paid untold dividends for horror fans.
With exclusive interviews with many of the miniseries’ key players – Pennywise himself, Tim Curry, cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, Tim Reid, and Emily Perkins, director Tommy Lee Wallace, writer Lawrence D. Cohen, special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon, and more – along with rare materials and never-before-seen footage, even the most knowledgeable viewers will learn a thing or two.
Here are six things I learned from Pennywise: The Story of It.
1. George A. Romero was originally attached to direct.
King and George A. Romero were fans of one another’s output, which ultimately led to their friendship and several collaborations, but both wanted to work together more.

"A lot of people told me that it poisoned their childhood." An extended official trailer has debuted for the doc Pennywise: The Story of It, another in the series of cinema history docs made by Chris Griffiths (including his RoboCop doc and Fright Night docs previously). The original It "movie" was actually a mini-series produced for ABC that aired on TV back in late 1990, receiving around 30 million views in its initial debut. The horror "film" has gone on to become a cult classic, thanks to Tim Curry's incredible freaky performance as the creepy clown known as Pennywise, and this documentary looks at its legacy. It also delves into the production, featuring tons of never-before-seen photos & behind-the-scenes footage, plus interviews with the entire cast and crew and much more. If you’re a fan of director Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film RoboCop, you’ll be happy to learn that a documentary that was kickstarted back in 2016 called RoboDoc: The Creation of RobCop is in the process of being completed and will be released next year so I thought now would be a good time to share a lengthy trailer for the film that was released last year.
Robocop is a movie that impacted a generation, particularly young boys who were too young to watch it in the first place. RoboDoc is a feature length fan-funded documentary exploring the making of the 1987 cult-classic, the sequels and its 30 year legacy.
I first saw RoboCop when I was around 12 or 13 years old with my friends when the parents weren’t around and I was in awe of how much bloody violence was in that film! Hell, I had RoboCop action figure before I had ever seen the movie!

Stephen King and Pennywise are back in vogue.
Not only is every King property being snapped up by major Hollywood studios – everything from Doctor Sleep to Castle Rock has been rerouted to the silver screen – but Pennywise has been reinstated as one of the scariest beings, well, ever. And it’s all thanks to New Line and Andy Muschietti’s reboot of It, Stephen King’s multi-generational horror epic.
The second, conclusive chapter of said reboot will be on our screens next September, but to ease the wait, a fan-funded documentary from director Chris Griffiths is on the way. Bearing the title Pennywise: The Story Of It, this particular project is an ode to Tim Curry’s killer clown, with more than 50 interviews and 700 never-before-seen photos from the It miniseries. Its goal? To tell a story “heard by few and showcase a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage and photos seen by even fewer.

Awesome as 2017’s It was, I must confess that I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the cash the major motion picture raked in. Really, the impressive numbers that it posted were pretty much unheard of for a horror flick, and are normally reserved for summer blockbusters, superhero movies and family favorites featuring CGI cartoon characters.
That said, there were likely a variety of factors instrumental in the big screen adaptation’s success such as positive word of mouth, good marketing, nostalgia for Stephen King’s novel and/or the 1990 television miniseries, and perhaps a few people people who wanted to conquer their coulrophobia (fear of clowns).
Speaking of which, the classic TV production will serve as the focus for today’s conversation, as it remains one of the more notorious of King’s works to find its way to the small screen, along with The Tommyknockers and The Shining (yep,...
