- Later in life he was a commercial pilot. In retirement, he volunteered with the organization Mercy Medical Angels, flying patients who couldn't afford to travel long distances.
- He was an Army Air Forces pilot who flew 39 missions in WWII, dropping supplies and sometimes spies behind enemy lines, for the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA. Before that, he flew a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, a heavy bomber, in 14 combat missions.
