A troubling hush seems to follow Anton Corbijn’s fourth and least enthusiastically received Life, a snapshot on the short but intensely felt celebrity of actor James Dean revolving around a famed photo shoot for the titular magazine administered by Dennis Stock. Considering the film stars Dane DeHaan and Robert Pattinson in the lead roles, the lukewarm reception of the film seems surprising, beginning with a muted response at the premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, where it played as a Special Gala Screening. Based on the film’s marketing and demure DVD release, one would be surprised to note Us distributor Cinedigm collected a titch over one million in box office following a limited theatrical and VOD release in December of 2015.

To celebrate the release of Life, available on DVD, Blu-ray and On-demand from 1st February 2016, we have 3 Blu-rays up for grabs.
In 1955 fledgling photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) convinced the young and up and coming actor James Dean (Dane DeHaan) to allow him to shoot him for an article in Life Magazine. Together the two took a trip from La to Dean’s hometown of Fairmont, Indiana via New York so that Stock could capture Dean in all the environments that had affected and shaped his unique character.
While Stock thinks he’s capturing a star in the moment before his meteoric rise, it gradually becomes clear that he’s actually documenting Dean’s final moments of intimacy and simplicity weeks before his untimely death and creating the photos that would turn him into an icon.

Anton Corbin knows cool. He can even create it, and has done so time and again in his pictures of musicians and rock stars — he is the photographer of whom Bono reportedly said, "I wish I were as cool as Anton’s photos make me look" (from your lips to God's ears, Bono). So, who better than Corbijn to investigate the myth-making potential of photography and to bring us the story behind one of the most iconically cool photos of the 20th Century? But proving that sometimes we lose sight of the things that are closest to us, Corbijn's "Life," which details the relationship between Life Magazine photographer, Dennis Stock, and definingly cool movie star, James Dean (which yielded the most famous photo of Dean, just months before his early death), is a weightless thing, skittering across the surface of the legend and only briefly ever daring to take a peek beneath.

Or Something Like It: Corbijn Resurrects Dean Without a Cause
Following his 2014 John Le Carre adaptation A Man Most Wanted, director Anton Corbijn delves into the life of another desired individual, cherished cinematic icon James Dean with Life. Focusing on the behind-the-scenes relationship between Dean and photographer Dennis Stock during the creation of a belabored, but eventually fruitful 1955 photo shoot for the titular magazine, Luke Davies’ screenplay falls short of showcasing any kind of notable bond potentially worth documenting.
Two artists come together for what would eventually become a particularly notable moment for them both and Corbijn does a fine job of catching the significance of changing times. Dean exhibits the sort of Beat sensibility that had revived a new generation’s interest in literature the decade prior, and Corbijn catches him just at the cusp of the stardom that would possess the public’s attention. But neither persona manages...

While a movie about James Dean starring Robert Pattinson didn't quite take off the way one would think, "Life" is nonetheless an intriguing proposition with Anton Corbijn ("The American," "Control") behind the camera, and Dane DeHaan playing the tragic cinematic icon. This isn't a movie about his death, but rather the specific moment in Dean's life that made him a legend in images. Read More: Over 30 New Images & An International Poster For 'Life' Starring Robert Pattinson & Dane DeHaan Written by Luke Davies ("Candy"), the movie chronicles the relationship between Dean and Life photographer, Dennis Stock, who manages to break through to the ephemeral star and capture the aura that would make him beloved by millions. Robert Pattinson continues to explore and expand his acting abilities post-"Twilight" by taking on Life photographer Dennis Stock, who gave the world candid photographs of the late actor James Dean, including his most iconic image in a rain-drenched New York. "Life" is about the friendship between the "East of Eden" actor and the photographer as they travel cross-country and promises to be an intimate portrait of these two figures. The trailer features DeHaan as the perpetually youthful Dean, the original cinematic rebel whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident. Nonetheless, Dean managed to leave behind an impressive filmography and his death thrust him into the spotlight as a legend. The trailer sheds some light into Dean's life, while also telling the story of a short friendship. The film also stars Joel Edgerton and Ben Kingsley as Jack Warner. "Life" will open in theaters and iTunes on December 4. Read More: Watch: Anton.

"I lose myself in my roles, I don't want to lose myself in all this other stuff!" Time to revisit the past. A brand new official Us trailer has arrived for Anton Corbijn's film Life, a drama starring Robert Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock, and Dane DeHaan as his subject, soon-to-be-an-icon actor James Dean. The story follows Stock who strikes up a friendship with Dean while photographing him. The travel around the country, and Dean learns what it's like to be famous. I am not a fan of this film at all (my review), the performances aren't even that great; I recommend staying away. But if this captures your interest, enjoy it. Despite so few films in his résumé before an untimely death, James Dean was immortalized as one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, and this December will bring another look at a more intimate aspect of his life. As scripted by Luke Davies and directed by Anton Corbijn, Life centers on the relationship between Dean (Dane DeHaan) and Life Magazine‘s Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), the latter of whom had been tasked with capturing the up-and-coming actor less than a year before his rise to stardom and tragic death.
We said in our review from Berlin, “Corbijn has successfully offset script weaknesses with striking aesthetics in the past, but this time his characteristic visual flair is surprisingly lacking. In researching for new film Life, Australian writer Luke Davies found the perception of Dean as brooding and long-suffering was more fiction than fact
It’s a moment frozen in time. James Dean walks through a deserted Times Square, hunched against the rain in a woollen trench coat, a cigarette clamped between his teeth. First published in Life magazine in March 1955, only six months before Dean was killed in a car accident, the image forever cast the actor as an angst-ridden young man.
The photo is just one in a series photographer Dennis Stock took, following Dean from Los Angeles film premieres to New York movement classes and family dinners at Dean’s uncle’s farm in Indiana. Taken over three months, Dean was a relative unknown at the time (his position in popular consciousness largely came posthumously). And while these photographs became famous, not much is known about what...

Anton Corbijn’s biopic of photographer Dennis Stock hanging out with James Dean is eye-catching but fails to deliver
Dennis Stock’s iconic portraits of James Dean clearly have personal resonance for photographer-turned-director Anton Corbijn, and there’s a charge to the darkroom scenes (a recurrent slo-mo image of a red-light filament illuminating) in this eye-catching real-life drama that promises hidden truths revealed. Sadly, the rest is rather more humdrum, as Robert Pattinson’s convincing shutterbug pursues Dane DeHaan’s too-baby-faced Dean around La and New York, before finally following him to Fairmount, Indiana, where he snaps him playing the conga among the cattle. “He’s the symbol of a new movement or something,” Stock tells his Magnum Photos boss John G Morris (Joel Edgerton), in between musing on the universal appeal of photography (“It’s a good way of saying, ‘I’ve been here, you’ve been here’”) and...

Comment about this story at your own risk. Robert Pattinson may or may not Google it to see what you think about him. He will be judging, since he knows you'll be judging him. The "Twilight" alum is now playing photojournalist Dennis Stock in "Life" and he talked to NME about the paparazzi, press, and attention to his own personal life. He's no longer with Kristen Stewart, but when he started dating Fka Twigs, who is now his fiancée, some fans posted racist comments and insults on her appearance.
As NME noted, Twigs said she was "shocked and disgusted" by the messages and Pattinson weighed in on the world of Internet comments in general.
I was talking to my dad about this and I bet him that if he looked up Nelson Mandela's funeral on YouTube, the first comment would be a racist one. And it was, with like a million upvotes.

Life is a listless biopic that doesn't even try to capture the neurotic intensity of James Dean as a young actor. It tells the story of the 1955 Life magazine photo shoot for which the photographer Dennis Stock shot images of the 24-year-old in New York and then accompanied the star on what turned out to be his last trip home.

There is no chemisty between Robert Pattinson, who plays Life photographer Dennis Stock, and Dane DeHaan as James Dean in this somnolent film about the magazine’s striking 1955 photo shoot
The title is unfortunate. This passionless, somnolent movie from Anton Corbijn has a numbed solemnity and tranquillised moodiness that has more to do with death. A hushed respect for the early demise of James Dean is effectively backdated into the film’s fabric. It’s a period drama that sleepwalks its way through the story of how Life magazine got its iconic 1955 photo spread about Dean: those intimate images of the charismatic young actor on the rainy streets of New York and at home on the family farm. Dean died soon after the pictures were taken. Dane DeHaan is an eerie likeness for Dean and Robert Pattinson plays Dennis Stock, the ambitious young photographer who persuaded Dean to co-operate. ★★★☆☆ It would be a mistake to call Anton Corbijn's Life (2015) a James Dean biopic, despite its subject matter. Far more interesting is the fact that Corbijn, a world famous photographer known for working with everyone from Bob Dylan to U2, has chosen to direct a film about photographer Dennis Stock, the man responsible for the iconic Times Square image of Dean. Life is a small but eloquently expressed drama of two men whose lives cross and how they effect each other's futures - with one of the pair destined to become a Hollywood icon.

The assignment took the duo across America to Dean’s hometown of Indiana, where Stock snapped black-and-white photographs of Dean that would outlive his short life. “I cannot wait for the story.

Long before he became a household name, James Dean was little more than an aspiring actor in the late ’40s and early ’50s, struggling to make ends meet. Though he was a bona fide teen heartthrob in his “Twilight” movies, Robert Pattinson has grown into a true Hollywood hunk, as is evident in the new preview teaser from “Life,” his forthcoming project with Dane DeHaan.

For a minute there, it appeared that photographer turned feature film director Anton Corbijn was going to retire. Robert Pattinson will take the lead role of an extraterrestrial astronaut in Claire Denis' upcoming sci-fi film, Screen Daily reports. The yet-to-be-titled film, set in outer space, is being written by Denis, British novelist Zadie Smith and Smith's writer husband Nick Laird. Based on an idea by Denis and her longtime writing partner Jean-Pol Fargeau, the film's plot remains under wraps "but it is known to take place beyond the solar system in a ‘future that seems like the present’." This is the latest idiosyncratic casting choice from Pattinson, who's also starring in Harmony Korine's Miami-set revenge thriller, "The Trap," and he will next be seen in Anton Corbijn's 1950s Americana ode "Life" as James Dean's friend and photographer Dennis Stock. Since the final Twilight film opened in 2012, Robert Pattinson has found consistent work in artier fare, taking roles in David Cronenberg's stoic adaptation of Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis (2012), The Rover (2014), Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars (2014), the upcoming Dennis Stock and James Dean biopic Life, and as T.E. Lawrence in Werner Herzog's upcoming Queen of the Desert. Pattinson will continue on that path, taking the lead role in acclaimed French director Claire Denis's first English-language film, penned by Denis, Zadie Smith, and Smith's husband, Nick Laird. Pattinson will play an astronaut, according to Screen Daily, in the sci-fi film that takes place in a "future that seems like the present." Denis, an art-house auteur known for her slow, elliptical narratives and stygian tones, has played with genre films before, notably her brilliant pseudo-vampire film Trouble Every Day and last year's relentlessly cryptic Bastards, so there's no telling how Denis defines "science-fiction.

Playing a screen icon such as James Dean is not a task that is shouldered lightly, but it’s one that Dane DeHaan is tackling, appearing alongside Robert Pattinson in the first trailer for Life. Control’s Anton Corbijn is back chronicling the lives of real people for this one, and Luke Davies wrote the script, which tracks the pair’s interaction in 1955 before Dean became an international icon. Photojournalist Dennis Stock met Dean at a party and quickly realised he could be something special. Initially defensive and feeling guilty that he spent so much time away from his son, Stock emerged from his shell as he hung out with Dean in Los Angeles, New York and Indiana, chronicling his world for Life Magazine. Of course, there was always a struggle to convince his bosses that Dean was worth covering, since no one realised quite what he’d become. On the evidence of this,...

Robert Pattinson’s character in “Life” shines behind the camera rather than in front of it, as the “Twilight” actor plays a photojournalist profiling James Dean. Directed by Anton Corbijn (“A Most Wanted Man”), the period drama set in the 1950s follows Dennis Stock (Pattinson) as he meets the up-and-coming Hollywood icon, played by Dane DeHaan. See-Saw Films and First Generation Films produced “Life,” which also stars Oscar winner Ben Kingsley and Alessandra Mastronardi (“To Rome With Love”). Luke Davies wrote “Life,” and it is co-produced by Wolfgang Mueller and Benito Mueller of Barry Films. Also Read: Ben Kingsley Joins Robert Pattinson,...

Anton Corbijn, the director behind the lens of projects as varied as A Most Wanted Man and George Clooney’s The American, is tackling a real-life biopic for his latest feature Life, which has today revealed its first full-length trailer.
Charting the meteoric rise to superstardom of one James Dean (Chronicle and The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Dane DeHaan), the upcoming drama from the photographer-turned-director will tell the story of his friendship with Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson), a budding photographer for Life magazine that captured some of the earlier, undocumented vignettes of Dean’s storied journey to becoming a bona fide household name.
Having helped get Dean’s foot – and roguish good looks – in the door, Stock and the model-turned-actor take a road trip from Los Angeles to the Big Apple, and Anton Corbijn’s feature film will track their burgeoning friendship. Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley, Kristen Hager and Kelly McCreary complete the cast.

Biopics seem to be the trend these days. But who wouldn’t welcome one for such an iconic figure like James Dean? Well, now you can decide for yourself. The first trailer for the film Life was released today, and stars Dane DeHaan as James Dean and Robert Pattinson as Dennis Stock, the Life Magazine photographer who sees something special in the up-and-coming actor. This is Anton Corbijn’s (Control, The American, and A Most Wanted Man) fourth feature film as a director, with a script written by Luke Davies (Candy). Here’s the synopsis:
A photographer for Life Magazine is assigned to shoot pictures of James Dean.
It’s always important for biopics to cast the right actor as their main subject, and by the looks of the trailer, DeHaan certainly has taken on the task to the best of his ability. While he may not physically look just like the iconic movie star,...

The first trailer has been released from the Anton Corbijn-directed "Life" starring Dane DeHaan as James Dean and Robert Pattinson as the Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock who was sent to profile him.
The pair embark on a road trip just as the tragically short-lived superstar is beginning his ascent with the soon to be released "East of Eden". The pair revealed and rediscovered themselves on this road trip around the United States.
Stock is responsible for some of the most iconic images of Dean including the rainy Times Square photo. No U.S. release date has been set as yet, but the film opens next month in several European countries.

James Dean has been held as the standard for cool since he emerged as a young talent to watch over 50 years ago. A number of movies have been made about the star’s tragically short life, but none quite like Anton Corbijn’s Life.
Starring Dane DeHaan as Dean, Life recounts the true tale of how Life Magazine photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) helped turn James Dean into an icon. Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton also star in what is definitely one of our most anticipated movies of the year.
James Dean was a famously reluctant star, and Dane DeHaan seems to have the mannerisms and look down pat. The shoes of Jimmy Dean are pretty big ones to fill, so we’re excited to see how he handles it. Pattinson clearly does enthusiastic photographer pretty well, and his character in the untold story of one of the biggest celebrities...

It’s been almost 60-years since James Dean passed away at the tender age of 24, but his legend hasn’t diminished an iota. Still one of the most iconic stars of all time, his status has largely endured due to the sense of tragic mystery he cultivates.
Now film-maker Anton Corbijn and star Dane Dehaan will try to pry back a little of that mystique with Life.
Check out the new trailer for the movie below.
Life focuses on the relationship Dean had with photographer Dennis Stock at the inception point of the actor’s burgeoning fame. Robert Pattinson will depict Stock, with Ben Kingsley and Joel Edgerton rounding out the cast.
Aside from a few prior stills, this is the first proper look we’re getting at DeHaan as Dean. He seems appropriately broody and cleans up nicely to resemble the star, but the heart of the...

Anton Corbijn looks to continue a streak of strong, engaging filmmaking with his fourth feature, Life, starring Robert Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock and Dane DeHaan as actor James Dean during the period Stock was commissioned to photograph Dean for Life magazine in 1955. Today the first trailer for the film dropped as it already has a September release date in France, though we are still waiting for Cinetic Media to announce a stateside bow. The film follows Stock and Dean as they take off on a photographic journey across the Us, from La to New York and on to Indiana. Ben Kingsley, Kristen Hager and Joel Edgerton co-star. "He's unreliable, he's evasive." The first full trailer has arrived for Anton Corbijn's new film Life, a drama starring Robert Pattinson as photographer Dennis Stock, and Dane DeHaan as his subject, soon-to-be-an-icon actor James Dean. The story follows Stock who strikes up an awkward friendship with Dean, and follows him all over the country as he meets young fans, and slowly learns what it's like to be famous. Unfortunately, this film has no life to it at all. I saw it in Berlin when it premiered and despised it, writing a scathing review saying just as much and more. As much as this trailer might grab you, don't be fooled by it. Here's the first official trailer for Anton Corbijn's Life, direct from Dazed's YouTube (via The Film Stage): Corbijn's follow-up to A Most Wanted Man, Life captures the nuances and complexities of the relationship between photographer...

Robert Pattinson’s career makeover is going… reasonably. Even before the “Twillight” series wrapped up, he was making an admirable move to work with people like David Cronenberg. Since it finished, he’s doubled-down on that, with “The Rover” and “Maps To The Stars” following in quick succession last year, and both proving pretty good, if a little divisive (he’s very good in the former, a bit forgettable in the latter). This year, Pattinson appeared in Werner Herzog’s “Queen Of The Desert,” and also has “Life” coming up for Anton Corbijn, with each movie premiering at Berlin. Verdicts on both were a bit muted, but we’re definitely more intrigued by the second, which follows the relationship between Life Magazine photographer Dennis Stock (Pattinson) and the legendary, ill-fated movie star James Dean (Dane DeHaan). ★★★☆☆ There is plenty of focus but little flash in Anton Corbijn's Life (2015), a snapshot of one of cinema's most enduring icons. A renowned photographer, Corbijn knows a thing or two about capturing the elusive essence of stardom, yet in his handsome portrait of James Dean's burgeoning rise to fame there's something noticeably absent from the frame. Observed from the vantage of one ambitious artist and his fascination with another, Life charts the symbiotic relationship of Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock (Robert Pattinson) and the then relatively unknown James Dean (Dane DeHaan). Stock notices Dean at a pool party thrown by director Nicholas Ray - pensive, disinterested and oozing charisma.
