In Stallone’s Instagram post, the Demolition Man discusses filming an “interesting scene in Tulsa King,“ which took place in a courtroom. Jay Williams remembers when he had 3,000 followers.
Growing up, he was “a big movies person,” he says, “always writing different scripts, into theater.” He ended up in college for film and it was during college that he started posting videos on Instagram. He wasn’t taking it super seriously–it was just funny videos he made with his roommates.
But those videos were his first taste of feeling famous.
“I would start going to class, walk around campus, and people were like, ‘Yo, I’ve seen your video! I saw your video on Instagram!'” he says. “That was back when I had 3,000 followers.

The best festivals point to the future, capture the zeitgeist, or honor the past. At Locarno in 2015, you could have had all three: Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Happy Hour (his first time premiering in a major competition), Chantal Akerman’s No Home Movie (the director in attendance just months before she died), and Hong Sangsoo’s Right Now, Wrong Then (a mid-career masterpiece), all played. So did Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, the final film of Andrzej Żuławski, and the directorial debut of Josh Mond, at the time best known for producing Martha Marcy May Marlene for Borderline, a company he established with Sean Durkin and Antonio Campos in 2003. Mond’s debut James White featured Cristopher Abbott’s first lead role and (one year before dazzling in A Quiet Passion for Terrence Davies) a Cynthia Nixon performance that made you sit up and take note. It won a prize in Locarno and another at Sundance.

These auteurs are ready for their close-up.
When Quentin Dupieux’s comedy about an ill-fated film set, “The Second Act,” opened the Cannes Film Festival May 14, it will be just one of several movies about filmmaking and filmmakers to touch down on the Croisette. After all, directors Christophe Honoré, Paul Schrader and Josh Mond are among the other prominent filmmakers who are ready to premiere semi-autobiographical stories.
Honoré’s in-competition comedy, “Marcello Mio,” casts Chiara Mastroianni as a version of herself who — after a director compares her to her late father, Marcello Mastroianni — dresses in drag and takes on his identity. Schrader’s in-competition drama, “Oh, Canada,” focuses on a documentary filmmaker (Richard Gere) telling his life story in a doc. Mond’s drama “It Doesn’t Matter” follows two friends chronicling their lives on video. Leos Carax’s 40-minute “C’est pas moi” is partly a self-portrait, with footage from his films and life.

As Deadline reported in February, Terence Winter, who stepped down as showrunner of the mob drama/comedy after its first season, has come back as a writer on Season 2 in addition to his continuing duties as an executive producer. Just when he thought he was out, they pulled him back in.
Emmy-winning writer Terence Winter is returning to Tulsa King.
The Sopranos veteran is back on board the Paramount+ drama after being the showrunner of its 2022 debut season. The series follows a former mobster, played by Sylvester Stallone, who forms a new crime empire in Oklahoma.
Winter and Tulsa King‘s creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan famously conflicted about the creative direction of the series. After Winter stepped away, the big question became who was going to take over his gig, given Sheridan’s self-professed preference for remaining hands-on with his shows. Stallone, likewise, has firm opinions about the writing in his projects — having written and co-written the screenplays for many of his hit films over the years — and claims some of the show’s dialogue was his own creation.

CBS has had a lot of luck with its Yellowstone rollout, even though the series has been on for years and is available in full on Peacock.
It’s no wonder they’re looking to Taylor Sheridan and Sylvester to bolster their summer programming with a broadcast rollout of Tulsa King.
Tulsa King gives Yellowstone a run for the money when it comes to content the profanity. As we know, Federal law prohibits obscene, indecent, and profane content from being broadcast on the radio or TV.
Will that stop people from tuning into the broadcast version of Tulsa King on CBS?
Doubtful. And why would it? What you don’t know, you don’t know.
And there are plenty of people who prefer their dramas to be more watered down, and airing them on CBS gives many different kinds of viewers to see programming they wouldn’t otherwise.

The first season of Taylor Sheridan’s “Tulsa King” is set to make its broadcast debut this summer, airing on CBS ahead of the Paramount+ release of Season 2.
This isn’t the first time Paramount Global is bringing a Sheridan streaming series over to its broadcaster: The network has seen major success by bringing “Yellowstone” from the Paramount Network to CBS. The first episode reached 6.6 million viewers, and as Variety exclusively reported, 50% of those viewers had never seen the show before. The CBS debut also drove some wins back to streaming — though on NBCUniversal-owned Peacock, which owns the “Yellowstone” rights — where Variety reported that viewership increased by 26% over a 10-day period. But with “Tulsa King,” all viewership bumps will remain in-house for Paramount.
Per the company, “Tulsa King” is the second-most-watched series on Paramount+, following only Sheridan’s “1923.”

Following the successful run of Yellowstone on CBS, another Taylor Sheridan series is getting a lineaer window on the linear network. The popular original Paramount+ drama Tulsa King, starring Sylvester Stallone, will make its broadcast debut on CBS this summer. The series’ first season will air on the network ahead of Season 2 launching this fall exclusively on Paramount+.
The stunt is part of the ongoing efforts by Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, Paramount+ and Yellowstone and Tulsa King studio MTV Entertainment Studios, to expose its content to new audiences on other platforms.
Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish addressed the move on the company’s earnings call Wednesday.

Rob Peace and Ibelin premiered at Sundance, showcasing stories about two exceptional individuals with tragic stories.
As far as entries at Sundance, both of these titles were impactful in their own ways.
Ibelin is an uplifting story about a person with limitations who finds his true self in an unlikely realm.
In comparison, Rob Peace is a cautionary tale about making the right decisions.
Should readers see these films?
Here are our capsule reviews of Rob Peace and Ibelin out of Sundance 2024.

Those who have followed this reviewer’s writing are aware of the disability perspective. It’s a minority viewpoint that most people have issues relating to until they are older.
The experience can feel very isolating, especially when a condition is degenerative. Ibelin is a wondrous documentary about an individual who found a community in one of the most unlikeliest places.

Plot: The true story of Rob Peace (Jay Will), a promising academic who, in a desperate attempt to raise money for his incarcerated father (Chiwetel Ejiofor) started a marijuana business that put his future in jeopardy.
Review: One of the recurring themes of this year’s Sundance was fatherhood. It’s a theme that cropped up in one of the fest’s most popular documentaries, Daughters, and was also prominent in films like Freaky Tales, Love Lies Bleeding, and Exhibiting Forgiveness. Most of the relationships were depicted as at least somewhat dysfunctional, and Rob Peace, in some measure, follows suit.
It begs the question, what would you sacrifice to save your father? Most movies – when they ask this question – do the reverse. We’re used to seeing stories about parents sacrificing things for their children, but not the reverse. In Rob Peace, which is based on a story that’s all too tragically true,...

Not long into Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Rob Peace, the eponymous character (Chance K. Smith) is sent to private school in a pre-emptive effort by his mother (Mary J. Blige) to keep him from the fate that often strands people of color in urban environments like Newark. Rob stands in front of the foreboding red bricks of his new school, as his new headmaster, Fr. Edwin Leahy (Michael Kelly), asks a group of Black teenagers, “What’s the most important thing you will learn here?” A few of the boys answer, but only Rob gets it right: brotherhood.
It’s the school’s most crucial lesson, etched on a plaque that you see the second you walk through the doors: “Whatever hurts my brother hurts me.” It’s chanted during morning convocation, where every student in the school gathers to take attendance, pray, and share the news as a community. And...

Sundance film festival: A magnificent lead performance from newcomer Jay Will helps to lift a rousing yet often uneven drama based on the life and death of a Yale student
How do you tell the story of Rob Peace? He was an exceptionally smart Black kid living in New Jersey, the product of a hard-working mother and a father who was convicted of murder when he was seven. His intellect and interest in science took him all the way to Yale on a scholarship, but circumstance took him back home and to a period of dealing drugs, a bright star crashing to earth, shot to death at the age of 30.
It’s a horrible, haunting tale, told by his old roommate Jeff Hobbs in the book The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, and now adapted to the big screen by Chiwetel Ejiofor, in his sophomore feature as director.

In his feature directorial debut, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Chiwetel Ejiofor crafted a humanizing portrait of a gifted Malawian boy who saves his village from famine by building a DIY windmill. That film — based on the true story of inventor William Kamkwamna — leaned into the conventions of inspirational movies to shape a narrative steeped in good-natured earnestness. But it also teased a portrayal of the complicated relationships between fathers and sons.
Ejiofor revisits this theme more forcefully in his latest directorial effort, Rob Peace, about a young man torn between the promise of his future and the responsibilities of his past. Adapted from Jeff Hobbs’ 2014 book The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace, the film offers a sweeping and empathetic depiction of its central character. Through Peace’s story, Ejiofor explores the violent impact of the carceral state and the fraught interdependence of a father and his son.

“Rob Peace,” Chiwetel Ejiofor’s second feature film as a director and an adaptation of Jeff Hobbs’ bestselling biography “The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace,” starts with a powerful enough image: a literal house on fire. It’s the house that once belonged to the Peace family, now charred on the inside and sitting vacantly in an East Orange, New Jersey neighborhood. The image is one Ejiofor returns to in this film about the lifelong institutional failures that led to the murder of promising Black Yale graduate Robert Peace in 2011 at the age of 30, and during an American financial crisis. Earnestly told and intelligently acted by “Tulsa King” breakout Jay Will in his first major film role, “Rob Peace” still suffers from the usual biographical drama cliches, confused cutting, and an often too blunt script that flattens the majority of the film’s surrounding ensemble into background noise.

Camila Cabello swapped the Grammy and VMA stages for the snowy streets of Park City to promote her new indie drama “Rob Peace,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
In the movie, Cabello plays the girlfriend of Rob Peace (“Tulsa King” actor Jay Will). He’s a promising Yale student who grew up in a crime-ridden New Jersey neighborhood. But his bright future dims after he’s forced to sell drugs to support his incarcerated father’s legal battles. It’s a terrible, true story based on the biography “The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace” by Jeff Hobbs, who was Peace’s college roommate.
“I felt a story like this needed to be told,” Cabello said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “People have told stories like this in an overly simplistic way… people coming from difficult circumstances; binary ways of looking at success and failure.

Yo-ho-ho, there's laughter on the high seas!
On The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 5 Midge accidentally commits an act of piracy, but instead of walking the plank, she gets taken away by the Coast Guard.
This episode felt like a return to form for the most part. Midge got to do what she does best -- stand-up comedy, get into trouble, then get let off with no real damage done.
The Weissmans continue to be self-centered, and Joel uses more emotions than common sense. This is consistency.
Midge is pretty blasé about getting arrested these days. She's even on friendly terms with Officer Paluzzo, one of the policemen who arrested her in the past.
It speaks to her privilege as a rich white woman that she can be arrested so many times but still go on to have a successful career.

Oklahoma is frequently depicted on screen as a peaceful place filled with scenic beauty, waving wheat fields and vast, bucolic plains. But the Paramount+ series “Tulsa King” captures a far grungier side of the Sooner State, and much of the credit for that goes to the show’s production designer, Todd Jeffery.
Created by Taylor Sheridan, “Tulsa King” stars Sylvester Stallone as Dwight Manfredi, a Mafia capo who’s banished to Tulsa, Okla., by his New York underworld family after serving a 25-year prison sentence. A fish out of water, the Brooklyn-born gangster wastes no time in organizing a new criminal empire made up of colorful Oklahomans.
Like Stallone’s character, Jeffery had never been to Oklahoma before working on the series, and the unpredictable climate caught him off guard at first. “The weather changed drastically from day to day, and sometimes you’d wake up and there would be...

It will likely surprise precisely no one that Sylvester Stallone doesn’t boast a particularly impressive personal awards history given that he once starred in an Academy Award Best Picture winner and his films have collectively earned more than $4.5 billion in box office worldwide. While he has three Oscar nominations to his credit – two for writing and starring in “Rocky” in 1977 and a supporting nod for “Creed” in 2016 – along with Golden Globe and Critics Choice triumphs for “Creed” in ’16, the overwhelming majority of his awards attention has come by way of the Razzies.
Maybe it’s time for Stallone to receive a little more respect.
Paramount+ plans a healthy Emmy campaign for season one of its nine-episode streaming mob-themed dramedy “Tulsa King,” which stars the 76-year-old Stallone in his first foray onto the small screen. In the show that premiered last November, he portrays Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a Mafia...

Exclusive: Camila Cabello has found her next major acting gig on the heels of Prime Video’s Cinderella. The Cuban-born pop star has closed a deal to join Jay Will, Mary J. Blige and Chiwetel Ejiofor in Rob Peace — the drama Ejiofor is directing from his own script, as his sophomore feature effort.
The film, currently in production, is based on Jeff Hobbs’ bestselling biography The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League. It follows Robert Peace (Will), a young man who grew up in a crime-ridden section of Newark, NJ and later graduated from Yale with degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry earned on scholarship. Peace led a dual life living in the insular world of academia and as a lab researcher of cancer and infectious diseases, while at the same time making six figures from the sale of marijuana.

Sylvester Stallone is one of the greatest Hollywood legends to ever grace the silver screen. His franchises Rocky and Rambo solidified him as an action star in the ’80s, and over the past several decades, he has remained active in the industry, helping creatively with movies like Creed.
Recently, Stallone made the move to TV with the brand-new Taylor Sheridan series Tulsa King. Stallone has a unique look on Tulsa King — with costume designers working hard to ensure that his character stands out from the crowd, as well as from members of his inner circle.

As the Sylvester Stallone drama Tulsa King gets renewed for a second season at Paramount+, Deadline has learned that the series showrunner for the first season, Terence Winter, will not be continuing in his position going forward. He will remain on board as executive producer, but Winter will now focus on other projects, which will include a streaming series with Martin Scorsese, whom he often collaborates with. As well as a limited series about the 1986 New York Mets, which is revealed to have been a passion project for the writer/producer.
Tulsa King is one of many shows that come from Taylor Sheridan, who has created such hits for Paramount+ like Yellowstone, 1923, and Mayor of Kingstown. It is reported that Winter had decided to depart just ahead of season 2 due to creative differences. Deadline says it was apparent in an earlier interview that Sheridan and Winter had conflicting visions...

“Tulsa King” co-creator Terence Winter has stepped down as showrunner of the hit Paramount+ crime drama, TheWrap has confirmed. But he’ll remain credited as an executive producer on the show, starring Sylvester Stallone, and the search for a new showrunner is in progress.
Winter’s departure was due to a combination of unspecified creative differences and desire to focus on other projects, including an in-development streaming series with Martin Scorsese.
Co-created by Winter and “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan, “Tulsa King” follows mafia underboss Dwight Mancini (Stallone), who did 25 years in prison and loyally kept his mouth shut about his mob family. Fresh out of prison, he’s sent to Oklahoma to establish new businesses for the family, but ends up forming his own crew instead.
