Competed in the National Spelling Bee two years in a row. In his second appearance, 1965, he sat next to Ben Bernanke, the future Fed Chairman (2006-2014). Alan finished 14th in the country, while Ben placed 26th.
Completed two 26.2-mile marathon races: New York City 1976 (finished 761st in 3:28:01) and Boston 1977 (placing and time conveniently forgotten).
Licenses held: USPA Class A (Parachutist), PADI Open Water Diver (SCUBA), FAA Airplane Pilot (Single Engine, Land), FAA Glider Pilot (Aero Tow), FAA Glider Pilot (Winch Tow), FAA Pilot Ground Instructor (Basic).
