Matthew Vaughn’s new twisty spy comedy, Argylle, is set to hit theaters this week. The film sports an all-star cast and features Vaughn’s signature off-kilter style that ran rampant all over his other spy series, Kingsman. The trailers already take audiences on a fourth-wall-breaking journey that deals with Bryce Dallas Howard’s Elly Conway character having to come face-to-face with the very espionage that she writes in her books. However, it also leads to a mysterious reveal of the real Elly Conway, who is assumed to be played by an uncredited star. Matthew Vaughn says he has plans for two sequels, but he’s waiting to see how the first is received. If early reactions are anything to go by, there is a lot of potential for success.

In a Jan. 3 email from Hollywood Creative Alliance founder/co-ceo Scott Menzel to studio publicists ahead of Critics Choice Awards voting, he asked for them to “hammer that point home” to talent that around 50 of its members were part of both the Hca and the Critics Choice Association, TheWrap has learned. Menzel added that these voters “could be a make or break for a lot of people… 50 votes is a Lot.”
On Thursday, the Hollywood Creative Alliance disputed the characterization by the Cca that they had told studios they could influence Critics Choice Awards voting in a way that was improper. Earlier in the week, the Cca told its members that, in response to these comments, critics who were part of both groups were now required to resign from the Hca to maintain their Cca membership.

On Tuesday, the board of the Critics Choice Association notified the roughly 63 members of its approximately 600-member organization who were also members of the Hollywood Creative Alliance that they would have to pick one group or the other.
The Cca’s board said that it had concluded this step was necessary because it had uncovered “evidence that a representative of the Hca has improperly suggested to at least one studio (and we suspect more) that it could influence Critics Choice Awards voting,” and that this “led that studio to reach out to Cca and request that action be taken to protect the integrity of our awards.”
The Hca has been plagued by external criticisms and internal dissension for years and even changed the name of its organization (from the L.A. Online Film Critics Society to the Hollywood Critics Association) and awards show (it used to be the Hca Awards...

Critics Choice Association members were emailed Tuesday evening with a notice that they could no longer be part of both the Cca and the Hollywood Creative Alliance. That’s because the Hca had allegedly told studios that it could influence Critics Choice Awards voting, according to an email obtained by TheWrap.
“The reason Cca has taken this action is that we have evidence that a representative of the Hca has improperly suggested to at least one studio (and we suspect more) that it could influence Critics Choice Awards voting in a way that led that studio to reach out to Cca and request that action be taken to protect the integrity of our awards,” the organization wrote to members who were part of both critics organizations.

Several months after the Hollywood Critics Association rebranded itself as the Hollywood Creative Alliance, the org has also given its signature awards shows a new name. The Hca announced Friday that its various Hca awards will now be known as ‘The Astra Awards.’
That means the Hca Film Awards, Hca TV Awards and Hca Creative Arts Awards will become the Astra Film Awards, Astra TV Awards and the Astra Creative Arts Awards. The name change was approved by the org’s advisory committee on Nov. 17.
“As the Hollywood Creative Alliance expands to include creatives and other industry professionals, we wanted an award name that would be reflective of the newly relaunched organization,” said Hca CEO Scott Menzel in a statement. “The name ‘Astra’ is a perfect award show title evoking celestial brilliance and creative mastery. Ridley Scott has proven himself a master of the historical epic, with many fans eagerly awaiting the release of Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. The film recently had its world premiere in Paris, and the first reactions to Napoleon have begun to emerge. We’ll update with more Napoleon reactions as they roll out.
Napoleon is a triumph that sees Ridley Scott at his best. The action set pieces are unforgiving and both Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby disappear into their roles. The film is always at its peak when they're on screen together.

Ridley Scott prints the legend in #Napoleon/ #NapoleonMovie & it absolutely rips. A compelling love story between a man & his country, military career, wife & ego. Battle sequences are visceral, gory & gorgeously expansive in scale & scope. Phoenix is great, but Kirby transcends.

With the fall festival circuit firmly in the rearview mirror, many of the most anticipated films of the 2023 fall season have already screened for critics. One of the last films that remained unseen was “The Iron Claw,” Sean Durkin’s new A24 sports drama that tells the story of the Von Erich wrestling family. The film, which stars Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich and Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, premiered in Dallas on Wednesday before screening for critics in Los Angeles on Sunday. And early reactions suggest that A24 could have another hit on its hands.
“The Iron Claw” documents the rapid rise to wrestling superstardom and even quicker fall toward tragedy that befell the Von Erich family. After family patriarch Fritz Von Erich (played by Holt McCallany in the film) built a following as a villainous heel on the wrestling circuit, his sons entered the business in quick succession.

After months of bad buzz resulting from rumoured re-shoots, lousy test screenings, a surprisingly short running time and abysmal box office tracking, the MCU’s The Marvels is upon us. Opening hot on the heels of the middling Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania and some poorly received Disney Plus shows, many predict The Marvels will be a rare box office misfire for the studio. To be fair to Marvel, their track record is second to none, with this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy 3 outgrossing all other superhero fare this year, so perhaps their predicted demise is premature.
At any rate, critics’ screenings for The Marvels just went down nationwide, with our own Alex Maidy just out of a screening in Chicago. Here are his thoughts hot off the press:

The Hollywood Critics Association, which had recently been hit with allegations of malfeasance and accused of harboring a hostile membership environment, has completed an organizational restructuring that it believes will address those issues. The Hca was set to reveal those plans to its 180 members this afternoon, including a new name: The Hollywood Creative Alliance.
Hollywood Critics Association leader (and We Live Entertainment journo) Scott Menzel, who was at the center of much of the controversy, will still remain as CEO/president, but will be joined by a new board: vice chair Yong Chavez of Abs-cbn; member engagement head Jeandra LeBeauf of Black Girl Nerds; secretary Morgan Rojas of Cinemacy; and treasurer Louis Valentine, an external Cpa who will handle finances as an outside member. The Hca holds several awards shows every year that have been well attended by A-list talent, including ceremonies for both TV and film.

Scott Menzel, founder of The Hollywood Critics Association, said in an email to members Wednesday that the organization is restructuring and bringing in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion advisor. The announcement arrives the same day former board president Nikki Fowler went public with accusations of racism against Menzel.
Fowler resigned earlier this month, citing a “hostile, biased and dismissive” work environment. On Wednesday, she shared a long tweet in which went into details, including that every time she mentioned racial bias, she was met with “hostility” by Menzel, Hca treasurer Alisa Gichon and vice president Nestor Bentancor.
“In my opinion, they wanted a Black female public-facing token President but brought in without any announcement, a white female Treasurer, Alisa, to be studio-facing with financial transparency alongside Menzel,” Fowler wrote.

Critics reviews are in for “The Flash,” and the early word on the superhero film is quite strong as the film is being called “wildly fun,” the “best Dceu superhero movie yet,” and “a jewel in the Dcu canon.”
The film currently has a 72% Rotten Tomato score with 54 reviews.
Deadline’s Pete Hammond, who called the film “wildly fun,” added that “The hype is real. DC’s The Flash may not be the greatest comic book movie ever made, but it comes damn close. Easily the best in the genre since Spider-Man: No Way Home, this fresh, invigorating and hugely entertaining summer treat is as good as it gets when it comes to cinematic takes on superheroes.”

Nikki Fowler, an entertainment journalist who has served as the president of the Hollywood Critics Association during a tumultuous period in the history of the organization, which produces the Hca Awards, has resigned from that position and the group, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
In a letter obtained by THR on Friday, Fowler wrote to the Hca’s board that, for her “own well-being,” she is no longer willing to subject herself to “a hostile, biased and dismissive executive work environment.”
Fowler, who in 2006 founded and has since served as editor-in-chief of the entertainment publication/website Glitter, had been an Hca member since May 2021, served on its board since April 2022 and as its president since September 2022.
She stood behind the organization when it came under fire last year amid questions of financial and voting impropriety, emphasizing the importance of its founders’ stated mission of being gender balanced and racially diverse.

Don’t expect the hype for “The Flash” to slow down.
Following months of breathless advanced praise for the film from folks like DC Films boss James Gunn, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, and potentially even Tom Cruise, journalists and junketeers got to see the first public screening of the superhero film and added their huzzahs to the din of excitement.
On Tuesday night at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. debuted “The Flash” for theater owners and select media. According to Variety, “the finished product elicited plenty of cheers, laughs and maybe a few tears in the room at Caesars Palace.”
Indeed, the first wave of reaction tweets expressed wide-eyed awe and astonishment. Here’s one example from Fandango’s Erik Davis: “Forget DC, it is without a doubt among the best superhero films ever made. An all-timer. Inventive storytelling, Fantastic action sequences, great cast. So Many nerdy details.

First reactions to The Flash are quickly racing onto social media. Select members of the press and guests of CinemaCon experienced DC’s latest superhero epic earlier this evening, with the movie garnering some of the most positive reactions I’ve ever seen. One of my most anticipated films of the year, Babylon, is getting shredded across social media. Damien Chazelle‘s latest feature doesn’t hit theaters until December 23, but early reactions to the film are pouring in. They’re mixed more vigorously than a Bourbon Old Fashioned prepared by Fritz at Reese’s 1890 in Long Island, New York, and we’re here to collect some of the most extreme comments.
According to the official synopsis for Babylon, the film is “an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, Babylon traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.”

Monday night, Paramount hosted an early screening of Damien Chazelle’s highly anticipated new film “Babylon,” and reactions to the comedic epic set in the Golden Age of Hollywood are as wild and grandiose as the era it depicts.
Out Dec. 23, the film is the Oscar-winning “La La Land” writer-director’s first feature since 2018, and in his own words, his most ambitious project yet. The A-list cast is led by “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” co-stars Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt, as well as newcomer Diego Calva. Olivia Wilde, Flea, Jean Smart, Tobey Maguire and Spike Jonze among many others also star in this fictionalized account of big dreams and bigger debauchery in 1920s Hollywood.
A first trailer, released in September, promised entertainment and chaos in equal measure, with characters narrowly avoiding certain death on movie sets, falling off of balconies at sumptuous parties and snorting lines of coke.

Damien Chazelle’s new film Babylon is shaping up to be one of the most divisive of the year.
The latest from the director of acclaimed hits Whiplash and La La Land is a three-hour plus epic set in Hollywood.
Many have been expecting the film, which stars Margot Robbie, Diego Calva and Brad Pitt, to be yet another Oscar contender for Chazelle, whose last release was First Man in 2018.
However, going by the first reactions, it seems Babylon could be too divisive to become an awards frontrunner.
Chazelle himself said that the film was inspired by an intriguing mix of films – namely The Godfather, La Dolce Vita and Nashville.
Reactions have stemmed from those in awe of Chazelle’s impressive directing skills to those overwhelmed by the sheer amount the filmmaker tries to cram into the film.
Variety‘s Clayton Davis called Babylon a “high octane, cocaine-inducing trip”, while...

Critics, journalists, and awards pundits in Los Angeles — and especially those who race to Twitter to offer snap reactions after big studio screenings — were in their element on Monday night, which marked the first public screening of Damien Chazelle‘s awards hopeful “Babylon.”
The film — a 183-minute fantasia about the early days of Hollywood picture-making — stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Jovan Adepo, Jean Smart, Samara Weaving, Li Jun Li, Lukas Haas, Max Minghella, and Tobey Maguire, plus newcomer Diego Calva in a lead role and reunites Chazelle with cinematographer Linus Sangren, who shot “First Man” and “La La Land,” and composer Justin Hurwitz, who has collaborated with the writer-director since his first indie, “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.” All three of those collaborators won Oscars for “La La Land.” Editor Tom Cross, who won an Oscar for Chazelle’s “Whiplash” and was a nominee for “La La Land,...

Paramount has pulled the curtain back on “Babylon,” Damien Chazelle’s period comedy documenting the excess of the early age of Hollywood. An early screening Monday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills has opened the floodgates for first reactions.
The 188-minute epic represents a return to awards season for Chazelle, who became the youngest best director Oscar winner ever in 2016 for his work helming “La La Land.” His subsequent Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man” and his Sundance breakout “Whiplash” also made sizable dents in their respective awards runs.
Margot Robbie, Diego Calva and Brad Pitt lead “Babylon,” among a stacked cast that includes Tobey Maguire, Jean Smart, Li Jun Li and Jovan Adepo. Chazelle has described the film as being inspired by Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita,” Robert Altman’s “Nashville” and “The Godfather” — “old-school epics that managed, through a handful of characters, to convey a society changing.

Once upon a time, Black Adam was simply meant to be a one-off villain in a "Shazam!" movie. Now, the largely unknown hero will have his own day on the silver screen, and wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is taking on the role in a much bigger way.
The upcoming "Black Adam" film follows a mortal slave who was given the powers of the gods, but used them for vengeance — for which he was entombed, becoming Black Adam. When he is freed 5,000 years later, he finds out exactly how he wants to get justice.
There's no denying that DC hasn't had as smooth of an on-screen journey as Marvel has. DC fans are a little beaten down at this point, and all they want is a film they can believe in and love wholeheartedly. Naturally, this has fans dying to know if "Black Adam" is worth the wait — and it...

The first reactions to Jordan Peele’s “Nope” are pouring in as the movie continues its premiere in Los Angeles, earning praises for the director’s turn to science-fiction and drawing comparison to filmmakers like Steven Spielberg.
Expectations are high for “Nope,” given Peele’s emergence as one of the most beloved directors over the last five years. His film debut, “Get Out,” earned four Oscar nominations, including best picture, director for Peele and actor for Kaluuya. Peele won the Academy Award for original screenplay. The film’s 255 million worldwide gross was matched by Peele’s follow-up, “Us,” which was praised by critics and sent fans into spirals of theories and explainers.
Even though he’s built a brand for himself with only two films, Peele assured that he went into “Nope” relatively unfettered by audiences’ expectations of him.

Taika Waititi may have spent his post-“Thor: Ragnarok” success winning a screenplay Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit,” but the writer and director returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with flying colors next month with “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Reuniting with star Chris Hemsworth and with Natalie Portman returning as Jane Foster, hopes are high for this next installment — and if initial reactions out of Thursday night’s LA premiere are any indication, the film does not disappoint.
“Thor: Love and Thunder” puts our hero up against one of his most formidable foes yet: Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) and powerful extraterrestrial hellbent on sending gods into extinction. He faces off with Gorr alongside Portman’s Foster, returning for the first time since 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World,” who also possesses the power of Thor. Tessa Thompson returns as Valkyrie, and the film co-stars “Guardians of the Galaxy” heavyweights Chris Pratt and others.

Critics got their first look at “Jurassic World Dominion” on Monday night, and while official reviews are embargoed, there were apparently no dive-bombing pterodactyls to yoink the phones from their hands. Reactions went direct to Twitter, and it’s fair to say the response was mixed.
Scott “Movie” Mantz, often one of the more upbeat and rah-rah boosters of popcorn cinema, was unimpressed:
It pains me to say this, but I did Not like #JurassicWorldDominion — the story was convoluted & all over the place, and it didn’t feel special. “Top Gun: Maverick” blasted off at CinemaCon, where Paramount Pictures held the tentpole’s first public screening and generated rave first reactions. Journalists in attendance are hailing the long-awaited “Top Gun” sequel as “the perfect blockbuster” and “terrific in every conceivable way.” The film will screen at the Cannes Film Festival in May before Paramount releases it in theaters over Memorial Day weekend.
Paramount Pictures president Brian Robbins introduced the CinemaCon screening of the film and said star Tom Cruise has earned his reputation as the most daring actor in Hollywood. Cruise was not in attendance but did send along a pre-recorded video in which he told the audience, “Please enjoy, and, hey, let’s try to have a great summer!” Several moments in the film had the audience cheering, and Paramount executives were thrilled with the way theater owners were responding to the movie.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is undeniably one of the summer’s most anticipated blockbusters, but it also comes with plenty of question marks. The sequel features some serious star power in the form of Tom Cruise and is almost certain to contain plenty of jaw-dropping flight sequences. But considering that 36 years have gone by since the original “Top Gun” hit multiplexes, many fans have wondered if the quintessential 80s franchise could adapt to be relevant in 2022.

Based upon the first reactions to “Don’t Look Up,” the Adam McKay Netflix satire is yet another late-breaking awards contender in numerous categories — including potential nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and even Best Original Song for Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi.
“DiCaprio has launched himself into the awards conversation, delivering another knockout performance as an astronomer desperately trying to share the truth before getting wrapped up in the media and political antics that often plague crises (like a Covid-19 pandemic),” Variety awards expert Clayton Davis wrote in his piece on “Don’t Look Up,” which screened in New York and Los Angeles on Thursday for press and industry. “Angling for leading actor consideration, he could crack a field that is brimming with incredible names.”

Adam McKay’s star-studded Netflix comedy “Don’t Look Up” has begun screening for press, and the first reactions coming through on social media are ecstatic across the board. McKay follows Oscar winners “The Big Short” and “Vice” with a film that IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson calls “a dead serious and hilarious end of the world comedy” that feels like “‘Melancholia’ meets ‘Dr. Strangelove.'” McKay’s ensemble cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, and Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi.
Netflix’s official “Don’t Look Up” synopsis reads: “Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care.

First reactions to “Being the Ricardos,” Aaron Sorkin’s biopic of comedy legends Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, are coming in following the movie’s first screening in Los Angeles. The idea of Sorkin, with his divisive trademark style, tackling the material and the casting of Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as the “I Love Lucy” stars left many skeptical that the film could pull it off. But based on the first reactions below, it appears the movie has entered the awards race, with audience members praising Kidman and Bardem for capturing the essence of the duo.

Simu Liu, Greig Fraser, Jude Hill, Natalie Morales and the cast of “Coda” will be honored at the fifth annual Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards on Jan. 8.
Liu is being honored with this year’s game-changer award for his history-making role in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
“In previous years, the Game Changer award has been presented to an actor or actress whose most recent work showcased something so noteworthy that we believed it could only lead to bigger and better projects,” Hca president Nestor Bentancor said in a statement.
The newcomer award will go to Hill for his role as Buddy in Kenneth Branagh’s buzz-worthy “Belfast.” “Jude Hill’s performance is one that exudes joy, curiosity, and innocence. Hill instantly captured my heart and I believe he will capture the hearts of all those who see ‘Belfast,’” Hca co-chair Ashley Menzel said.

The first reactions to Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” are in — and they’re a wild ride, just like the movie.
As the social media embargo lifted on the film — which stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver — Tuesday afternoon, film critics and journalists took to Twitter to either praise “House of Gucci” or air their grievances. Full reviews will arrive on Nov. 22.
The film stars Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, the wife of Maurizio Gucci (Driver) who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s murder. It follows the events and aftermath of Gucci’s 1995 assassination, spanning three decades in the life of the high fashion family. “House of Gucci” also stars Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino.
Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes critic Erik Davis raved about the film, even comparing it to “The Godfather.”
“#HouseOfGucci has a definite Godfather vibe, rich w/ family betrayal, transformative performances,...

First reactions for Ridley Scott’s star-studded murder drama “House of Gucci” are trickling in following the movie’s official world premiere in London. The film is Scott’s second major release of 2021 following “The Last Duel,” which launched to strong reviews out of the Venice Film Festival but flopped at the box office. Will “House of Gucci” be a rebound for Scott? Based on the first reactions below, it appears the director has made a messy and soapy fashion epic that’s bound to be one of the buzziest films of the holiday movie season.
Written by Roberto Bentivegna and based on the Sarah Gay Gorden book “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,” Scott’s film casts Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of orchestrating the assassination of her ex-husband and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci...

After being delayed a week and switched from an in-person event to a virtual ceremony, the Hollywood Critics Association revealed the winners for its first-ever Hca TV Awards — and Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso” led the pack with four victories.
“Ted Lasso” was named best streaming comedy, best comedy actor in a streaming series (Jason Sudeikis), best comedy supporting actor in a streaming series (Brett Goldstein) and best comedy supporting actress in a streaming series. HBO was the most awarded outlet, with seven wins overall, followed by NBC (six).
The Hca Awards separated streaming from broadcast and cable, making for multiple wins among shows and performers who are going head-to-head in the Emmy race next month — for example, in drama actress, both Emma Corrin (streaming) and Mj Rodriguez (cable) picked up wins at the Hca TV Awards, but they will face off at the Emmys.

Jason Reitman’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” premiered at CinemaCon on Monday evening, and first reactions call the film a “perfect blend of classic Ghostbusters moments with a fresh & unique twist” and “Reitman’s love letter to his father and daughter.”
“‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is the ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel that I’ve been waiting all my life to see,” Scott Menzel wrote. “It is nostalgia done right. A perfect blend of classic ‘Ghostbusters’ moments with a fresh & unique twist for a whole new generation to enjoy. I got goosebumps.”
Business Insider’s Jason Guerrasio added: “‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ … Wow! Was not expecting how heartfelt it is. It has a very childlike Spielberg vibe to it. And @JasonReitman is extremely loyal to the original.”
In “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” a single mom (Carrie Coon) and her two kids (Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard) arrive in Summerville and begin to uncover their connection to the original ghostbusters — one of whom is apparently their grandfather.

The Hollywood Critics Assn. has scrapped its in-person Hca TV Awards, and will instead move the first-ever ceremony to a virtual event a week later.
Hca chairman Scott Menzel said the decision was made due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Los Angeles County and the US. Instead, the show will stream on the Hca’s official YouTube channel at 5 p.m. on Aug. 29.
“We spent the last two weeks going back and forth, seeing if the cases went down, and it’s just not going,” Menzel said. “Everything just seems to be on an upward tick. The most important thing for any event like this is that we have to look at the people in attendance and we decided this morning. I know that this seems like a last minute decision but given the numbers and how badly it’s been impacting the industry, this just seemed...
