The Wind Beneath Her Wings: Kavaite’s Sapphic Sophomore Sighs
Sophomore is an adjective that serves as a pun to describe Alante Kavaite’s latest film, The Summer of Sangaile, a coming of age tale concerning a young woman that discovers herself over the course of one very important summer. However, a similar interest in her woes isn’t extended to the audience. Though featuring a handful of sexual encounters, Kavaite’s film seems to be dabbling in the homoerotic tendencies of its protagonist, an emotionally troubled youth with little drive to pursue her greatest dreams. But beat by strained beat, there’s nothing innovative or subtle in this adolescent’s journey to spreading her wings and, literally, flying high.
In rural Lithuania, 17 year old Sangaile (Julija Steponaityte) meets the audacious Auste (Aiste Dirziute) at a local air show where a stunt pilot shows off fancy tricks. It’s obvious...

How’s that old 1950’s standard go? “Why must I be a teeeen-ager in love?”. Well, for one thing teen love inspires countless films, from all over the world. Take Lithuania, for example. That’s the setting for The Summer Of Sangaile, a most magical time of year, indeed. Now, it is a love story, between two 17 year-old girls, set against the backdrop of fashion, photography, and … aeronautics? Tray table up and buckle yourself in…
The film begins at an air show at a small town airport. Lovely, somber Sangaile (Julija Steponaityte) has her head in the clouds, almost bumping into other flying fans, as she stares at the circling prop planes. She catches the attention of a brightly attired show worker, Auste (Aiste Dirziute), who is selling raffle tickets. The prize: a ride on one of the two-seater stunt planes. The friendly Auste gives the shy Sangaile a ticket,...

It’s a national cinema that we barely mention here on the site, but Lithuania has received some big praise treatment by opening and winning at Sundance, and by having its international premiere in Berlin. In the perfect fairytale continuation of events, The Summer of Sangaile has found a smooching partner in the Strand Releasing folks. Variety reports that Best Director award winner Alanté Kavaïté‘s sophomore picture will show in the U.S. No release date has been announced.
Gist: The coming-of-age romance tale turns on Sangaile (Julija Steponaityte), a 17-year-old fascinated by stunt planes who meets another girl, Auste (Aiste Dirziute), while attending a summer aeronautical show near her parents’ lakeside villa. As the two girls grow closer and fall in love, Sangaile allows Auste, a free-spirited and vibrant young woman, to discover her most intimate secret, and finds in her the only person who truly encourages her to fly.

Today the first wave of titles playing at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival were announced and while the majority of the titles are new to me the names in front of the camera most certainly are not as you'll see the likes of Michael Fassbender, Nicole Kidman, Saoirse Ronan, Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Margot Robbie, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Jack Black, James Marsden, Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Jemaine Clement, Sarah Silverman, Toni Collette, Vincent Cassell and many, many more among the titles featured. I have collected several photos from many of the films playing the festival, which will take place from January 22 - February 1 in Utah next year. Today's selection includes the U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition and Next program. I'll be adding a few more pictures soon enough, but for now, have a look and see what stands out.
