After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.
In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”
Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

Before the writers strike — since joined by actors in Hollywood’s first double strike in 62 years — officially began, late night television hosts made a point to let their viewers know that their shows would be going dark if need be, in support of the writers. And, for the writers themselves, that support has been invaluable.
The late night crews were the very first to be affected by the strike, with every single show going into re-runs immediately as soon as it began. In what ended up being the final episode of “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” prior to the WGA strike beginning, Meyers carved out a moment to address the circumstances, saying that he feels “very strongly that what the writers are asking for is not unreasonable.”
He added that “If you don’t see me here next week, know that it is something that is not done lightly, and...

As the WGA strike entered its fourth week, Tony Kushner swore, Steve Earle sang, Wanda Sykes led union chants and Busy Philipps told CEO jokes for more than 1,000 demonstrators and hundreds of onlookers who filled the street in front of NBCUniversal headquarters Tuesday in Midtown Manhattan.
With a starry speakers list, celebrities dotting the crowd and turnout from several local labor unions, a “Rally at the Rock” outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza in support of striking movie and television writers filled one barricaded side of West 49th Street between 5th and 6th avenues — the equivalent of three city blocks — with cheering, sign-waving protestors who stayed for more than two hours. It was the largest turnout for any event organized by members of the Writers Guild of America East since the strike against film and television producers began May 2, a WGA representative told Deadline.

Top Hollywood writers took to social media to express defiant support for their first union walkout in 15 years and showed their feelings about studios being unwilling to meet their contract demands.
The Writers Guild of America announced the work stoppage will begin Tuesday afternoon. The union also released a list of claimed responses from the studios to their proposals, which helped fire up members.
“The Shield put FX on the map,” wrote FX’s Snowfall writer-producer Sal Calleros. “Mad Men put AMC on the map. House of Cards put Netflix on the map. Writers did that. Not some CEO. Know what you get when you put CEOs in creative lanes? You get Quibi.”
“They shut down an entire industry rather than part with less than 3% of their record profits,” wrote Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost).

Patrick Somerville, creator of the HBO series “Station Eleven” and the Netflix show “Maniac,” was among a slew of Hollywood writers to weigh in late Monday after the Writers Guild of America went on strike, saying the union’s negotiating points firmly lined up with reason — and the studios knew it.
“We’re going to do this because our guild is strong enough to do it,” said Somerville, who had changed his Twitter ID to “Strikerick Somverville” in an apparent writerly flourish. “The ask is level-headed, and even they know that we’re right. Collective action is the one place they can’t win.”

Spare a thought for the late-night hosts, who, this evening, will attempt to make some sense of the presidential election uncertainty. As the battle between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden continues, and may well continue for days, the likes of Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, James Corden, Trevor Noah, Conan O’Brien and Samantha Bee will return to relatively normal filming schedules to discuss the election.
However, writing jokes and speaking to guests including political folks such as Cory Booker, Shepard Smith and Steve Kornacki this afternoon to air this evening is a perilous task. “Writing punchlines today will be fun,” one late-night writer told Deadline.
There is also the outside possibility that some of these shows may get bumped if definitive news comes in quicker than expected this evening.
On Monday, Jimmy Kimmel Live! revealed that presidential candidate Kanye West was set to appear on Wednesday’s show.

Seth Meyers has, like the rest of the late-night community, been doing his NBC talkshow from his own house since the end of March.
Late Night With Seth Meyers, filmed in the comedian’s attic, has been gaining particular steam thanks to his A Closer Look segments, which dissect the craziness of the news, as well as Amber Ruffin’s takeover of the start of his show following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests against police brutality.
Taking over from Jimmy Fallon in 2014, Meyers has now made more than 1,000 episodes of his show, which is run by Mike Shoemaker and exec produced by Lorne Michaels.
Deadline spoke to Meyers during his two-week hiatus, which he said he was enjoying but admitted that he was “chomping at the bit” to return to structure, even if wasn’t the structure he was used to.

President Trump frequently makes a big deal out of how patriotic he is, but how well does he know one of America’s unofficial anthems, “God Bless America?” Turns out not even a little bit.
When Trump on Monday told the the Philadelphia Eagles they were disinvited from the White House party celebrating the team’s recent Super Bowl Victory, he blamed players who “disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.” He announced instead that public celebration of patriotism would be held in its place.
But when the event he called “Celebration of America” came, Trump was caught on video mouthing along to “God Bless America,” clearly not knowing any of the lyrics aside from the title.
