4Dplex Experiences Added In Cambodia, Thailand
Korean tech firm Cj 4Dplex has struck a deal with Thailand’s Major Cineplex to add two ScreenX locations in Cambodia and Thailand. One will be located at the Aeon Mall Mean Chey, have almost 500 seats and have a 75-foot-wide central screen, making it the largest ScreenX auditorium in Southeast Asia. The other will be at Bangkok’s ICONSiam Mall location, debuting on July 27.
ScreenX is a multi-projection system with an immersive 270-degree field of view. That creates a virtual reality-like setting with cinema quality resolution. Major’s first ScreenX launched in 2022 at its Siam Paragon location in central Bangkok.
“We’ve received amazing reactions and feedback from our moviegoers for ScreenX in Thailand and expect to generate the same response at our Cambodia location,” said Vicha Poolvaraluk, CEO, Major Cineplex.

The Busan International Film Festival has unveiled its 10-film selection for New Currents, the event’s main competition section that focuses on Asian cinema. Since the festival launched in 1996, the program has been one of the region’s most important platforms for introducing emerging directors.
This year, two Indian films have been selected for the section including Jaishankar Aryar’s debut film Shivamma (2022), which traces the struggles of a poor and uneducated middle-aged woman; and Aamir Bashir’s The Winter Within (2022), which also depicts the suffering of a woman set in the Kashmir region, where political disputes and terrorist attacks are ongoing.

Artsploitation Films have announced that they have picked up the great crime drama from Chinea, Sheep Without a Shepherd. They're planning a streaming and DVD release of the film on March 23rd. This debut feature film from Malaysian director Sam Quah was a massive hit in China and a standout at Fantasia last year. I used the words 'thrill-ride' too many times in my review from the festival but I truly meant it. Sheep Without a Shepherd is an honest to goodness thrill-ride of a crime drama. An -ism like 'thrill-ride' gets tossed around a lot but here we truly mean it. Few directors knock it out of the park their first time around yet on his first time directing a feature film...

With the beginning of the pandemic taking place in the Sinophone world, the already tumultuous circumstances of the area reached a level pretty close to eruption. However, as it usual the case with sociopolitical instability, the creative forces of the artists emerged once more triumphant, ending up in a number of films that could easily be described as great. Taiwan cemented its place as one of the countries with the most intriguing cinema, China continued with its festival-appealing, European style movies along with a number of blockbusters, while Hong Kong took a definite step back, with the political situation in combination with the pandemic leaving an already declining industry in a rather bad situation, with very few, but occasionally notable, productions overall.

Zhang Yimou’s censored film “One Second” apparently now finds itself in the Chinese government’s good books: it has been given pride of place as the opener at the government-run Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival.
The film was initially set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2019. But its treatment of the still sensitive Cultural revolution period is believed to have been its undoing. It was abruptly pulled from the festival due to “technical reasons,” a common euphemism for censorship, in one of the highest profile cases of Chinese state intervention seen abroad in recent years.
Now, after apparent reshoots and, at long last, government approvals for a Nov. 27 commercial theatrical release, it is set to debut at the festival in Xiamen city on Nov. 25.

The 24th edition of Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) closed off on Thursday in limited capacity, finishing up the first fully-hybrid film festival in the world. Unlike many of its peers this year, Bifan hosted screenings in-theaters (at 35% capacity) alongside its online program on local streaming service Watcha. Because of the in-person offering, Bifan unwittingly witnessed the world premiere of more films than originally intended, including Annecy contender “Beauty Water”. The famous genre film festival has stood as a monumental alternative to the popular online festival format.

Katrin Gebbe’s mother-daughter drama Pelican Blood won the Best of Bucheon Award at the hybrid edition of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) which wrapped in South Korea on Thursday July 16.
The award comes with KW20m in prize money and the festival closes with a screening of the winning title. The Germany-Bulgaria co-production is Gebbe’s sophomore feature after Nothing Bad Can Happen which premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2013. Exclusive: Chinese crime drama Sheep Without A Shepherd, one of the last big box office hits in China before cinemas were forced to shutdown, grossing $167M, has been set for a UK theatrical release by distributor Trinity CineAsia.
Theaters have started re-opening in the UK and multiplexes including Cineworld and Vue are set to following in the coming weeks. The title will debut next Friday (July 17) and has confirmed seven venues to date.
Starring Xiao Yang, Tan Zhuo and Joan Chen, the movie follows a husband and wife who run a small company in Thailand. When one of their two daughters kills the son of a local regional police chief in self-defence, the father has to bury the body and cover the truth.
The movie is a remake of 2013 Indian thriller Drighyam. It was directed by Malaysian Chinese director Sam Quah and executive produced by Chen Sicheng, whose credits as a director include Detective Chinatown.

Universal Pictures’ sci-fi thriller “Extinction” starring Lizzy Caplan and Michael Pena was critically panned, yanked from its planned 2018 U.S. theatrical debut, and offloaded to Netflix. But it has found a new life on the big screen two years later in China, where it came in fifth at the box office over the weekend with a $1.4 million debut.
With its strict censorship and It compliance rules, China is one of the few countries in the world where the multinational streaming platform does not operate. But China is also becoming a new frontier for Netflix’s moves into the theatrical space. It is the territory where some Netflix titles accorded a release may stay in the most cinemas the longest.
Last May, Netflix’s “Roma” grossed $700,000 in a limited China release. “Marriage Story” is set to come out nationwide Feb. 28.

Chinese pet drama, “Adoring” sauntered into 2020 at the head of China’s weekend box office with earnings of $16.8 million after debuting last Tuesday, the final day of the decade. The tear-jerking, but feel-good, ensemble drama about people and their companion cats, dogs and pigs has grossed a cumulative $62.4 million, according to consultancy Artisan Gateway.
China has seen a pack of pet movies hit theaters recent years, including at least three dog films in 2019. American title “A Dog’s Way Home” grossed $5.36 million after it hit in January, while the Dennis Quaid-starring “A Dog’s Journey” made $29 million in May. “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” completely fizzled in its second weekend in China, setting it on track to become the least successful installment of the franchise by far in the world’s second largest film market.
By Monday, “Skywalker” ranked seventh at the box office behind a pack of local Chinese action films and dramas. After opening with the weakest debut of any recent “Star Wars” films in the country, it made just $2 million in its second weekend and accounted for less than 3% of China’s total screenings.
