Chennai, Aug 19 (Ians) Even as young Indian chess Grandmasters like R. Praggnanandhaa, D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin are on the global prowl, are they going to shoulder India’s chess burden for the coming decades?
What about the next set of young players from India? And where are they?
The results of the recently-concluded Fide World Youth U-16 Olympiad at the Netherlands opened up these questions as the Indian team did not figure in the top 10.Seeded 16th, the India came 15th at the end.
On the other hand, second seeded China won the gold with Turkey and Armenia coming second and third, respectively.
Curiously, none of the young Chinese players figure in the world juniors top 10 list, while India’s Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Erigaisi and Sarin are ranked second, fourth, fifth and seventh, respectively.
So the logical corollary is that India should be having a battery of strong young upcoming chess players.

One of the 2022 milestones, for Arjun and also for Indian chess, is the signing a five-year 1.5 million sponsorship deal with the Singapore-based Quantbox Research.
The sponsorship deal takes out the big financial worry from his mind so that he can focus on strengthening his chess prowess and gear up to achieve his target — becoming a world chess champion.
Perhaps in one of the biggest sponsorship deals in Indian chess, Quantbox was started by Prashant Singh, an ex-chess player and a big fan of Arjun.
"There will be no change in my playing schedule. The sponsorship does not come with any strings attached like Elo rating to be achieved, tournaments to be won and others. The sponsor has not stipulated any targets so that I can focus on my target — the world championship cycle," Arjun told Ians in an interview.

Barrier breaking Soviet chess icon Nona Gaprindashvili has sued Netflix for $5 million in a defamation lawsuit over a line in the Anya Taylor-Joy starrer.
Specifically, Gaprindashvili is perturbed by the seemingly incorrect statement in the ‘End Game’ finale of the limited series that compares her real life accomplishments to that of the Taylor-Joy’s fictional Beth Harmon. “The only unusual thing about her, really, is her sex, and even that’s not unique in Russia,” a commentator quips as Harmon plays in a white knuckle match in Moscow. “There’s Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.”
Umm, not so much.
“Gaprindashvili is a pioneer of women’s chess and a much-loved icon in her native country of Georgia.

ReviewThis is a movie that goes from not-much-happening to a-lot-happening phases alternately. Krishna SripadaWorking stillsThanks to the proliferation of Ott content, a lot of audiences are now well-versed with movies and TV series from around the world. A learned audience is mixed news for moviemakers. Benjamin Ree: 'A lot of documentaries are too long and I wanted to have a documentary where you feel satisfied, but you still want a bit more' Photo: © Scanpix - Morten Rakke Benjamin Ree’s sophomore feature documentary Magnus tells the story of Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, popularly referred to as the “Mozart of Chess”. The film charts Carlsen’s life from childhood, through home video footage, to his 2013 World Chess Championship match against the incumbent champion Viswanathan Anand.

This documentary about world champion Magnus Carlsen has nothing interesting to say about the state of chess today
Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, 25, is the current chess world champion, but if there were a tournament for the best chess movie of all time, this one would get knocked out well before the quarter finals. Why a documentary about Carlsen is hitting our screens at all rather than one about, say, his rival Viswanathan Anand, may have something to do with Magnus’ stolid Scandinavian good looks, chiselled if somewhat bovine features that have made him a bit of a celebrity beyond the chess world. But even though director Benjamin Ree has accessed the family archive of footage showing young Magnus as a socially awkward prodigy through the years and interviewed him directly many times, the film barely dents his inviolate wall of polite reticence. Worse still, there’s scant input from chess...

Child prodigies are the curiosities of the celebrity world – and while those amazing little actors and singers might impress us, it’s even more remarkable when children excel in those cerebral endeavors typically left to adults.

The film creates a unique look at a child genius,...
