"Chainsaw Man" is a wild deviation from the typical shōnen manga -- Tatsuki Fujimoto went above and beyond in its art and storytelling, using seemingly superficial violence, action, and vulgarity to tell a profound story about human desires, found family, and control. When it came time to adapt the wildly popular series, Mappa naturally saw fit to deviate in its own way. To do justice to the unconventional storytelling methods, the Tokyo-headquartered studio chose to pull from a new generation of talent to get it right. A director as youthful and energetic as the original manga.
While that decision could've backfired, Mappa had a proven track record that seemed to justify its stance. In recent memory, the studio has been responsible for a bunch of popular adaptations -- most notably, the likes of "Jujutsu Kaisen" and the final season of "Attack on Titan." Both of these anime were visually ambitious...

"Chainsaw Man" was a challenge to adapt from the very beginning. Not just because of its violence and sexual content, but because of its many faces. Sometimes the series is a knowingly stupid action thriller. At other times, it's a bittersweet coming-of-age tale, a skin-crawling horror story, a commentary on labor under late capitalism, and a heartfelt ode to bad movies. The protagonist Denji is an aspirational everyman who fights devils with chainsaws, but he's also a sadboy whose pitiful dreams are easily manipulated. Rather than simply alternating between comedy, horror, and tragedy, creator Tatsuki Fujimoto blends them so that the reader is constantly pulled in whatever direction they least expect. He's the young comics equivalent of Bong Joon-ho, if Bong had a deep love of Syfy schlock like "Sharknado."
Adapting "Chainsaw Man" required threading together these contradictory impulses, while simultaneously transforming the material so that it worked on screen.

Welcome to a new edition of Pop Culture Imports for the month of October! Now granted, this month's column may not be quite as spooky themed as past October editions, but you could argue that it does give us a taste of different kinds of horror — from the erotic horrors of "Thirst" and "La Piscine," to the horrors of war in "All Quiet on the Western Front," to the horrors of having a chainsaw for a head. Don't say I don't give you variety.
Let's fire up those subtitles and get streaming.

The fall 2022 anime season is jam-packed with anticipated shows, from returning franchises with surprising new takes, to new seasons of beloved shows and more. However, here is arguably no bigger or more anticipated premiere than "Chainsaw Man."
Based on the manga sensation of the same name by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the hype for this show is on the same level as something like the final season of "Attack on Titan," despite it only just airing its first episode. The "Chainsaw Man" anime comes from Studio Mappa, and is directed by Ryū Nakayama (the spectacular 19th episode of "Jujutsu Kaisen"), with scripts by Hiroshi Seko ("Attack on Titan"). "Devilman Crybaby" composer Kensuke Ushio is handling the soundtrack.
In its premiere, "Chainsaw Man" essentially adapts the very first chapter of the manga, which is more about introducing us to our main character than the plot or world of the show. In truth, this...

One of the most anticipated anime series of the year is finally here. Acclaimed animation studio Mappa adapts Tatsuki Fujimoto‘s massively popular series, bringing its quirky blend of humor and ultra-violence to the small screen. If the premiere episode is any indicator, expect a wild and extremely gory road ahead for the inaugural season of Chainsaw Man.
Denji (Kikunosuke Toya) isn’t your average teen. Not only has his father’s debt left him in an impoverished state, where he’s selling his body parts to pay it off, but he’s also made a pact with an adorable chainsaw devil, Pochita (Shiori Izawa). When not selling off his bits and possessions to survive, Denji earns cash selling the corpses of other devils. When Denji gets betrayed and left for dead, he gets a second chance when he’s revived as “Chainsaw Man” – a man with a devil’s heart.

The 2022 anime year has given us an abundance of riches. We already had an incredible winter season with so many good shows it was nearly impossible to just pick a few of them, and even the relatively smaller spring and summer seasons had memorable shows. Now, though, fall 2022 is about to "Revenge of the Sith" the anime year with a full-on massacre of the Jedi younglings in terms of how many good shows are coming out. There's potential banger after potential banger about to be unleashed, from hugely anticipated new shows, to returning champs, a massive franchise making its triumphant return, and even a few hidden gems that can break big.
What's more, after the Crunchyroll-Funimation merger, it's never been easier to find an anime to watch, because the vast majority of them are all streaming in a single service. With dozens of shows to choose from, it can be...

Sharpen your teeth, because the highly-anticipated anime adaptation of "Chainsaw Man," Tatsuki Fujimoto's award-winning and extremely popular manga series of the same name is arriving on Crunchyroll next month. Originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, the "Chainsaw Man" anime is directed by Ryū Nakayama, and tells a bleak and nihilistic story about Denji, a teenage boy living with Pochita, a painfully adorable dog err ... chainsaw devil as the two harvest devil corpses to repay the debt of his father. After Denji is betrayed and killed he makes a contract with Pochita to be revived as a "Chainsaw Man," which gives him the ability to spawn chainsaws out of his body, including a horrifying metal head with a chainsaw on top and sharp teeth to help him gnash demons.
