Elvis Presley‘s “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear” sounds like another 1950s doo-wop song. With its focus on teddy bears, it seems like it should be a children’s song. Despite that, it’s more suggestive than most 1950s hits. Some of the lyrical choices in the song are pretty questionable.
Elvis Presley’s ‘(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear’ isn’t for kids
Plenty of great rock songs are children’s songs, including The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” and basically everything by The Monkees. Elvis’ “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear” is anything but that. It’s a song where Elvis asks his lover to touch him like she’s touching a teddy bear. How this didn’t upset the censors at the time is beyond me.
Furthermore, Elvis asks his lover to put a chain around his neck and lead him around.

Considering the complexity of The Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, it makes sense that Paul McCartney has some difficulty singing one of its songs. He said he was instrumental in writing the song. John Lennon might have told a different story.
1 ‘Sgt. Pepper’ song is a vocal challenge for Paul McCartney
During a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, the “Silly Love Songs” star discussed performing a Sgt. Pepper song live. “I also like doing ‘For the Benefit of Mr. Kite!’ [sic] that’s nice to do,” he said. “With ‘Mr. Kite,’ the thing about it is, it’s quite challenging cause the bass part goes somewhere that the vocal doesn’t go. So it’s like you’ve got to split your body in half and send one half to do the vocal and send the other half to do the bass part. That’s good to do; it’s quite hard to do.

The Beatles‘ “Strawberry Fields Forever” seems like a fantastical song, but it was actually a very personal statement from John Lennon. He said the tune reflected his incredible insight into the world — but it wasn’t an ego trip. Notably, the track became a hit again when it was covered by a synth-pop group.
The Beatles’ ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ reflected his insecurity
The book All Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono includes a 1980 interview. In it, the “Imagine” singer explained a lyric from “Strawberry Fields Forever.” “So the line says, ‘No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low.’ What I’m saying, in my insecure way, is ‘Nobody seems to understand where I’m coming from. I seem to see things in a different way from most people.’

Robyn, Fever Ray, and First Aid Kit are among more than 1,000 Swedish artists who have called for Israel to be banned from the Eurovision 2024 song contest.
The musicians signed an open letter calling for Israel’s ban from the 2024 competition, which is currently scheduled to host its finale in Malmö, Sweden on May 11th. In addition to Robyn, First Aid Kit, and Fever Ray, other signatures came from fellow Swedish artists, dancers, producers, and songwriters, including Axel Boman, Refused, Viagra Boys, DJ Seinfeld, and Kite.
Addressing the European Broadcast Union (Ebu), the letter outlines the collective artists’ frustration with the decision to let Israel compete in light of the ongoing war in Gaza. “The fact that countries that place themselves above humanitarian law are welcomed to participate in international cultural events trivializes violations of international law and makes the suffering of the victims invisible,” the letter reads.

Melanie Martinez showed support for Palestine during her concert in Paris on Sunday by bringing the country’s flag on stage, and her microphone cut out as it was being unfurled.
The incident took place toward the end of the singer’s performance at Zénith Paris – La Villette on Sunday (November 26th). After leaving the stage, she also displayed the following message on the screen: “Free Palestine. Ceasefire now.” It’s unclear whether there is a connection between Martinez raising the flag and her sound being cut.
See the fan-shot footage below. At the time of publishing, Martinez and Zénith Paris have yet to comment on the matter.
Tensions are especially high during the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. At least 1,200 Israelis were killed during an October 7th Hamas attack on Israel, while a reported 13,300 Palestinians have been killed since Israel’s declaration of war and subsequent bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

October 20, 2023 New York, NY – Bea Miller is in a new chapter in her life and career, and her latest singles, including “gauche,” offer a glimpse into her evolving lyrical and sonic direction. Her 5th independent single released this year, “gauche” is a gritty, midtempo alternative track with poignant references to a real-life car crash she caused at the age of 18. The single is the latest released via her own label, aptly named gauche records (Ada Worldwide). The new single arrives ahead of her 8-city US gauche tour.
The emotion-packed single was produced by frequent collaborators Kyle Shearer (Allie X, Rina Sawayama, Melanie Martinez) and guitarist Mikey Lasusa. Bea helms the track as the lead songwriter alongside Cara Salimando (Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Allie X) with additional contributions from producers Mikey Lasusa and Kyle Shearer. On the moody track, Bea navigates being distracted and day-dreaming while still being overly self-aware (and owning it). Lyrically,...

Taylor Swift was the big winner at the 2023 MTV VMAs, including the top award of the night Video of the Year for “Anti-Hero.” The singer-songwriter had the odds in her favor as she was the most nominated artist of the night going into the award show with eight mentions.
Other winners of the night included Shakira with the Video Vanguard Award as well as Best Duo alongside Karol G for their song “Tqg.” Anitta took Best Latin for “Funk Rave,” while Nicki Minaj won the Best Hip-Hop trophy for “Super Freaky Girl.”
Diddy also took the stage to perform some of his hits and to accept the Global Icon Award.
One of the big moments of the night was when Nsync took the stage to present the first award of the night. Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, Justin Timberlake, Jc Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick came together to hand out Swift with the Best Pop award.

In my opinion, the most interesting categories at the VMAs are not the most publicized ones like Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. Instead, they are the professional categories, voted on not by fans but by music insiders. Indeed, this is where quality generally prevails over popularity. So let’s consider who the winners in these categories will be.
Best Visual Effects
The nominee that might stand out the most in this category is Melanie Martinez’s “Void,” just based on the volume of effects used for worldbuilding. However, last year multiple similar videos lost to Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow’s “Industry Baby,” which used its effects in a more supporting role. So I’ll go with Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” here; it’s subtle, but it’s also using visual effects in an interesting way. Plus, since the effects serve the story, voters might appreciate it more.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has officially arrived to turn the rest of the summer pink, just like Lizzo’s song that kicks off the film’s soundtrack. The “Barbie” album is available on vinyl, and it includes a collection of some of pop culture’s most-talked-about musical artists, perfect for the contemporary take on Mattel’s 63-year-old toy. 23 May 2023 — Cautious Clay has signed with Blue Note Records and released “Ohio,” the lead single of his forthcoming label debut due out later this year. Since 2017, Cautious has been steadily building a devoted fanbase with his heartfelt songwriting and a unique sound that moves fluidly between pop, alternative R&b, and indie rock. For his next move, the Cleveland-born, New York-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer also known as Joshua Karpeh takes a giant artistic leap forward with an ambitious album that reveals a new side of his artistry by delving deeper than ever into his jazz influences.
“Ohio” touches upon Cautious’ early experiences growing up in Cleveland. The song struts to a buoyant fat bassline reminiscent of 1970s-era Isley Brothers as Cautious’ emotive tenor voice floats through a dreamy soundscape with lyrics depicting a young Joshua exploring his options in a vast heartland.

In the past few years, the Grammy for Best Alternative Album has been a highly contested award. With recent nominees and winners including critically beloved masterpieces like Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” Phoebe Bridgers’s “Punisher,” Wet Leg’s self-titled album, and Japanese Breakfast’s “Jubilee,” it’s no wonder that the caliber of the nominees is expected to be pretty high, especially since alternative music tends to enjoy better critical reception than most genres these days. This year the race already seems to be quite competitive, with still a few months left until the September 15 eligibility deadline.
