At least one person has died as a result of the fast-spreading wildfire plaguing more than 30,000 acres in southern California, officials say.
The blaze, dubbed “Thomas Fire,” started near Santa Paula — which is about 70 miles north of Los Angeles — and spread to cover at least 31,000 acres by 4 a.m., according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. One person died in a rollover crash while trying to evacuate the area as thousands attempted to escape in the dark, CNN reports.

In the comedy world, 2017 has been a year of struggling to stay timely. When the most monumental breaking news is reduced to a tiny blip in record time, it’s difficult to make something that feels relevant without leaning on that day’s crisis. So in her debut special, “Michelle Wolf: Nice Lady,” Wolf takes a slightly different headline-free tack and ends up with an hourlong set that makes for a very funny time capsule for where we are now.
“Nice Lady” was filmed in mid-August and, as you may have heard, a lot has happened since then. But it’s even more a testament to Wolf’s approach to topics like workplace equality, birth control, and societal expectations that they feel ready-made for the full swath of what this year has offered. Wolf doesn’t have to reference the downfall of powerful men in the past few months when...

Sometimes, we are more equipped to deal with other people and countries rather than Mother Nature. In this week’s episode of Madam Secretary, Mother Nature takes center stage. Elizabeth works with former U.N. employee Kat Sandoval (Sara Ramirez from Grey’s Anatomy) to prevent a worldwide pandemic of smallpox. Henry also tries to have The Talk with Jason after the latter confessed that he is in love with Piper. When I saw the eco-activist Atem Markevich lying in that hospital bed in quarantine, it scares me. It also breaks my heart. The guy dedicated his life to saving the planet, and

On November 13th 2017, Louis Xiii Cognac premiered “100 Years” – The Song We’ll Only Hear If We Care – a unique musical composition created by Pharrell Williams that will not be released until 2117.
Pharrell - #Ifwecare
Louis Xiii partnered with Pharrell on this innovative project due to a shared dedication to environmental issues. The original song is a creative expression of the delicate relationship between nature and time, and the effect humans have on their environment. Each decanter of Louis Xiii represents the life achievement of generations of cellar masters, so Louis Xiii must always think a century ahead.
Pharrell’s exclusive track was recorded onto a record made of clay from the chalky soil of the Cognac region, and stored in the cellars of Louis Xiii in a state-of-the-art safe specially designed by Fichet-Bauche that is only destructible when submerged in water. Animal lovers often tell us their “dream vacation” is to go on an African safari, but the price of that trip is cost prohibitive to the average person, let alone family. And while there are singular animal attractions in the U.S. — the wild ponies of Assateague or swimming with dolphins in Florida, for instance — no wide swath of landscape here can quite compare to the diverse nature and environment experiences of a visit to Western Canada.

Editor’s note: The following is an exclusive excerpt from “Film Censorship in America: A State-by-State History” by Jeremy Geltzer. The book, which follows Geltzer’s previous effort “Dirty Words & Filthy Pictures: Film and the First Amendment,” will be released on December 19. In this excerpt, Geltzer explores the forgotten legacy of pioneering female filmmaker Nell Shipman.
Far from the soundstages of Hollywood, Nell Shipman ventured into the wild to produce movies that celebrated independent women in exciting scenarios. Although Shipman’s name may no longer be familiar, she deserves to be remembered as one of cinema’s important female pioneers.
Nell Shipman was born in British Columbia and arrived in Southern California by 1912. She found success as a writer—winning both first and second prize in a scriptwriting contest. In the early days of Hollywood before corporate structure was set in place, several women were able to develop behind-the-scenes power.

Jim Sturgess thinks we can learn something from his latest film, Geostorm.
The new blockbuster film comes at an interesting moment. While many regions have been plagued by hurricanes and earthquakes, it seems like unfortunate timing to visit the topic of climate change on the big screen. However, it is an issue that we need to face, and the horrors of what a "geostorm" would entail might give audiences enough awareness to do some research and do their part in preserving our Mother Earth.
Geostorm isn't the only recent film to tackle this issue, though it may be the most obvious. Darren Aronofsky created an elaborate metaphor for the way humans are destroying the planet with his polarizing film mother!, and Paul Schrader visits the existential crisis this...

Every fall she dies, only to be resurrected in the spring. The seasonal cycle of Mother Nature is a beautiful thing to behold, but perhaps most gorgeous—and haunting—is the time of year when her leaves crunch underfoot and the nights grow longer. For years, Daniel Mitchell's heavy metal band Autumns Eyes has created music that blends perfectly with the Halloween season, and his latest album, Ending Life Slowly, is no exception. Ahead of the atmospheric new album's release this Halloween, we've been provided with an exclusive look at the album's morbidly beautiful artwork by Sorrow Grips to share with Daily Dead readers.

Alexander Payne’s Downsizing is a disappointingly shallow dive into a supremely interesting topic. As humanity continues to gunk up Mother Nature’s designs with smog and muck, Payne toys with eco-politics and reminds us that our world needs to be cared for if we’re to continue habitation – but then something strange happens. Characters are introduced, meatier discussions are sidestepped and intellectual debates deflate when one man’s soul-searching journey shifts into prime focus. Execution flips from a broader investigation to such a simple-minded view, losing grip of the magical sci-fi reality Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor dream up. A puzzle missing a few pieces, if you will – with viewers left visualizing the entire picture despite a few empty gaps.

There aren’t that many films that make you take a serious look at the medium itself, and in that respect Mother! is some sort of accomplishment. Darren Aronofsky is no stranger to messing with the boundaries and potential of both film and storytelling, but letting pure daring run wild is a method that is bound to result in hits and misses. For every Black Swan, you’re going to get a Noah or The Fountain.

Although until now they’ve only been known as fashion designers, cinema has always been part of Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s work. The siblings often use films as inspiration for their collections and have delivered runway shows dedicated to the likes of Japanese horror movie Kuroneko among others, their elaborate, stunning designs are also staples of awards season red carpets with actresses like Kirsten Dunst and Natalie Portman wearing them to festivals and ceremonies. In fact, Portman collected her first Best Actress Oscar in a purple Rodarte gown, after Kate and Laura had designed many of the costumes for Black Swan. After being so immersed in the world of cinema, it seems that making a film was the logical next step, and so they’ve done with Woodshock, a hallucinatory journey into the mind of Theresa (Dunst) a young woman battling depression after the death of her mother.

When did Paramount know that “mother!” was a problem? Nothing about the film should have been a surprise to the studio; Aronofsky sold the $30-million movie to late studio chairman Brad Grey on a pitch, running through the audacious allegorical concept beat by beat. Maybe the studio concentrated on the Jennifer Lawrence of it all, until tracking showed the numbers wouldn’t support the long haul of a platform release. Left to right: Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence in mother!, from Paramount Pictures and Protozoa Pictures.
Darren Aronofsky’s new film Mother! is a nightmare of a movie, but it is intended to be. It is like going over a waterfall – sudden, terrifying, exhilarating, disorienting, an assault on the senses, but not what one would call fun. Still, if one survives, a few might want to do it again.
Mother! is not a film for everyone but it is a brilliantly made bit of cinema, filled with haunting images, moving performances and intellectually intriguing themes. Those who have seen Aronofsky’s films know that he can go dark and surreal – think of “Black Swan,” parts of “Requiem of a Dream.” This film takes you further down the rabbit hole – much further. It is sometimes like walking through a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, a landscape of symbolism. Some will be intrigued...

Now that it’s screened at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals, “mother!” isn’t quite the mystery it once was. As most of the world has yet to see Darren Aronofsky’s new thriller, however, questions remain — and, with his film unveiled to the world, Aronofsky is slightly less tight-lipped than he has been in recent months.

After the staggering success of the Harry Potter franchise, it’d have been awfully easy for him to rest on his laurels, coasting by on the fame and fortune that those films earned him. In fact, we’ve seen a lot of young stars do exactly that, but it seems like Radcliffe’s determined to turn himself into a legitimate leading man, and he seems to be well on his way to doing so – if he hasn’t already.
While the actor still does sign on for the occasional big budget flick, he’s also becoming an increasingly popular figure in indie cinema, with his Harry Potter cachet allowing directors to secure funding for their weirdest pet projects. How else do you explain last year’s brilliant Swiss Army Man, in which his reanimated corpse farted its way...

Jennifer Lawrence is out making the rounds promoting her new movie “mother!,” but that isn’t the only matriarch on her mind. The subject of Hurricane Irma came up during an interview with Britain’s Channel 4, prompting the jokey actress to get serious for a minute: “You’re watching these hurricanes now, and it’s hard — especially while promoting this movie, not to feel Mother Nature’s rage and wrath.”

If there’s one Great British institution that comes in for some flack on a regular basis, it’s the good old BBC. While to many that should just be ‘the old BBC’, with a new series of Strictly Come Dancing (I’m not that big on brevity) looming large, the snipers should be silenced, at least until Christmas. But as this is only a temporary measure, what’s the one thing that the broadcasting giant can count on all year round? Why, Mother Nature of course.
Whether it’s a tiger hunting, a flock of flamingos, or something a bit closer to home like fox clubs at play, these are the things that go some way to justifying the licence fee. Yes, the licence fee; that bone of contention that always leaves the general public feeling a little, well, ripped-off. One failed sitcom after another, overpaid presenters, plus the sporting calendar dwindling every year,...

Climate change is due to human activity. And we continue to ignore it, and the only voice we have is through voting." When asked about her thoughts on President Donald Trump, she said, "I don't find him confusing. I think I know exactly what he is." 2017-09-08T10:31:12-07:00Jennifer Lawrence Thinks Hurricanes Are Caused By Trump's Election?
Jennifer Lawrence said in a recent interview that she's tempted to think that the hurricane that struck Texas and the one that's threatening Florida are part of Mother Nature's plan to get back at us for electing Donald Trump to the presidency. That notion seems not to be well supported by science, but on the other hand, Texas and Florida did both go for Trump in the election. For the time being, we're going to assume that global weather patterns aren't directly influenced by the electoral college, but we'll be open to considering new developments as they occur. Read on and decide for yourself whether or not you agree with Lawrence.

Mother Nature certainly isn't helping the dramatic downturn at the August box office, where revenue for the weekend could hit its lowest level in more than 15 years, in addition to being down nearly 50 percent from the same frame last year.
Hurricane Harvey has prompted theater closures in Corpus Christi and other locales along the Texas Gulf Coast. Inland, numerous cinemas have also shuttered in Houston.
Even without the storm, none of the weekend's new offerings were expected to earn more than $5 million, and that's proving to be the case.

It’s a little difficult for some people to truly enjoy the rain. After all it usually comes with dark clouds laden with moisture just ready to dump on the day and create a wet, slippery, and often sodden mess no matter where it touches. Some people view the rain as an ill omen or just a way for Mother Nature to ruin their day. Others however take a different tact and look at the rain in a much different light. It can be refreshing, liberating, and can herald the washing away of the old in preparation for the new. It

Despite that the current Us president pulled out of the Paris climate accord earlier this year, former vice president and current activist, Al Gore, still says he comes down on the side of hope.
Following his 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, about the effects of global warming, Gore released a follow up documentary last month called An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, which speaks to the human ingenuity that is behind his hope.
In an NPR interview, Gore said that with the fossil fuel industry financing an industry of climate denial through pseudo scientists and pseudoscientific reports, enough doubt was created so that the sense of urgency about solving the crisis was lost. “But because Mother Nature has a more persuasive voice than any of us,” he says, “they’re losing this battle. The Paris agreement was truly a historic breakthrough, illustrating that all around the world,...

When An Inconvenient Truth hit theatres 11 years ago Al Gore went from being known primarily as the former Vice President of the United States to being known as one of the world’s foremost environmental activists.
The documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim and based on the slide show that Gore had developed to educate people about global warming grossed $50-million worldwide — almost unheard of for a doc — and won the Oscar for Best Documentary.
Eleven years later Gore is releasing a follow-up film, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, this one from helmers Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk. We spoke with Gore in Las Vegas at the end of April, about a month before U.S. President Donald Trump shocked environmentalists by pulling...

Fact: It never hurts to take a hint from Mother Nature. This is especially true when that cue comes in the form of new jewelry for you. Icymi, adorning your limbs in dainty earth-inspired details is the more sophisticated way to wear your jewelry these days. And why wouldn't it be? If you're already an everyday jewelry kind of girl, you're no stranger to gold, diamonds and other glimmering details. But if you're looking for that next investment piece that's more than a simple chain, try a leaf-y add on. And if colored gems aren't really your thing? Sure, some of the below are decked with stunning emeralds, but others are much simpler in design. So go on and...

Is it possible to whittle away at an “unmovable rock” in the political arena? Especially when there’s a 40 year history of bloody conflict forming an unbreakable shell around that formidable boulder? Well, how about forcing him into a trip with his enemy? That’s just what happens in this new film, in which its makers wish to be a “fly on the wall” during a remarkable day that changed the course of a country. It’s a “what if” look at a seminal time just 11 years ago when two opposing leaders try to find common ground during The Journey.
