Inside MPTF’s Evening Before Benefit with Stars of ‘Succession,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Abbott Elementary’
Who doesn’t love a group photo packed with big-name actors?
A slew of stars came together to say cheese and help raise north of $2.5 million in West Hollywood on Saturday night at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 17th annual Evening Before benefit. Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

“For me, growing up loving shows like ‘Cheers’ for example – it always felt like a neat barometer that if you had a store that was the ‘Cheers’ store and that store sold a T-shirt with each character singularly on those shirts, each shirt would sell,” co-creator Sudeikis said during the event. “I wanted to be part of something that aspired to do that.”

AFC Richmond brought some of its top players and an esteemed journalist to the Monte-Carlo Television Festival after the soccer team at the heart of Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” concluded its final season.
Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, Cristo Fernandez and James Lance bid a fond farewell to the show in Monaco. But is it truly good-bye? When asked about it, Harris replied: “We’re still pretty much together. We were in L.A. last week, and now we’re in Monte-Carlo. I suppose we’re enjoying the fruits of our labor.” Lance chimed in, saying: “The show may be over, but we’re just getting started, aren’t we? We’re still here, having a great time.”
When it comes to those hoping for a fourth season, Lance said: “There’s always hope.” His co-stars echoed together, “Believe,” the rallying cry that their manager, Ted Lasso, instilled in the team.

Having covered this business for a while, I’ve written several stories over the years about pilot and series recastings, and it always strikes me as one of the cruelest moments for anyone to experience in this business.
Imagine you’ve been given a role in a pilot: The exciting news appears in the trades, you film the episode and take the cast publicity photos. Then your show is picked up! But there’s a caveat: Your role is being re-shot with a new actor. Devastating! Cue sad trombone sound effect.
That’s why I like these kinds of stories better: The background actors, guest stars and recurring actors who eventually graduate to series regular status thanks to sheer persistence and talent. That’s the case this season for “Ted Lasso” standout James Lance, who plays Trent Crimm — formerly of The Independent, now just independent — on the show.

It’s the end of the road for “Ted Lasso” and AFC Richmond as it all came to life on the Apple TV+ comedy from Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, and Bill Lawrence.
Or is it?
Apple has stayed vague about whether it was the Emmy-winning series’ final outing, despite public, bittersweet sentiment from the cast and near-constant speculation since well before Season 3’s March premiere. As recently as the morning of the finale, titled “So Long, Farewell,” a publicist underscored to IndieWire that Season 3 had not been confirmed as final. Along with the episode, Apple is now streaming a six-minute, 38 second goodbye video from the cast.
Episode 312 itself ties up the season’s big questions (“arcs” is generous), with Ted (Sudeikis) on his way home, Nate (Nick Muhammed) back at Richmond, Roy (Brett Goldstein) taking over as team manager, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) meeting a man and never having problems again,...

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from the Season 3 finale of Apple’s Ted Lasso.
The biggest question about the Season 3 finale of Apple TV+’s hit Ted Lasso is whether or not it would serve as the comedy’s series finale. Top to bottom, the episode titled “So Long, Farewell” feels like a series finale in how everything gets tied up but the show could certainly carry on as is—with or without Ted (Jason Sudeikis) who pulled the trigger on his move back to Kansas to be with his family.
From the moment the episode begins, Ted can’t help but smile while thinking he will be back home with his son Henry (Gus Turner). The pair exchange cute texts using funny gifs as they do.

Jason Sudeikis and ‘Ted Lasso’ Cast Rally at Warner Bros. Picket Lines Ahead of Show’s Season Finale
The cast and writers crew of Apple TV+’s sports comedy-drama “Ted Lasso” all came to a huddle at Warner Bros. picket lines on Tuesday.
Right after a day off from work, WGA writers hit the field for what is now the WGA’s fifth week of striking, as the WGA continues its fight for better residual pay in streaming, and the closure of the mini-room model, among other items, following a failed negotiation with the AMPTP. The cast and crew of “Ted Lasso” were one of the groups to hit picket lines.
“Much thanks to the gang for taking some time on such a big day to show their support for #wgastrong #tedlasso,” “Ted Lasso” co-creator Brendan Hunt said in an Instagram post.

“Sometimes we do these football weeks,” shares Billy Harris about being a soccer star on “Ted Lasso” in our recent webchat. He continues, “they are grueling. They are cold. But as an actor who loved football, I’m standing on the pitch in my football boots drinking a flat white. I have to stop and kick myself, because if I ever complain that it’s too cold, I’m living both of my dreams here.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In its third season, the show tells the story of an optimistic American, Ted (Jason Sudeikis), coaching a struggling English soccer team. Harris explains, “When I joined it was my first TV job. I came on the show not really expecting much out of my character. All I wanted to do was learn the ropes from these amazing actors that I was going to be working every day. I...

It’s been a tough time in Hollywood and beyond as the Writers Guild strike shut down production of just about every kind of entertainment — and lots of parties and events, too. Canceled/postponed celebrations included the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman, the Critics Choice Inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television and many others.
But music festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival marked the early beginning of summer fest season and Netflix helped launch Pride Month early with a huge “All Out” celebration in West Hollywood. Meanwhile, “The Little Mermaid” swam into Hollywood for a lavish premiere and SeriesFest: Chapter 9 took over Denver. So all is not lost in the world of Parties & Premieres, but we sure hope that Hollywood writers get the raises they deserve and go back to work very soon.

One of the best moments of “Ted Lasso” Season 3 came in this week’s “La Locker Room Aux Folles” and if you looked away for 10 seconds you’d have missed it. During halftime of a Premier League match, right after Isaac (Kola Bokinni) has gone into the stands to fight a homophobic AFC Richmond supporter, the captain hands his band to Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) to take his spot in his absence. Puncturing the seriousness, Jamie (Phil Dunster) and Sam have a playful back-and-forth about who should have it. Jamie playfully gestures to send the armband his way. Sam flips him off with a smile.
It’s a reminder of what “Ted Lasso” hasn’t been in recent weeks. Season 3 has largely become a bundle of ideas and thought exercises cobbled together in place of having any bigger plan. There was a throughline in the show’s opening season about gaining...

[This story contains spoilers for “La Locker Room Aux Folles,” the ninth episode of Ted Lasso season three.]
After several nearly hour-long installments, Ted Lasso comes in at a comparatively lean 44 minutes for “La Locker Room Aux Folles,” which despite its title and the opening and closing tunes on the soundtrack, is definitely not a farce about an elaborate attempt by anyone at Richmond to hide their true nature.
It does, however, bring some resolution to Colin’s (Billy Harris) coming out story and takes a big step in positioning Roy (Brett Goldstein) to become Richmond’s next manager if Ted (Jason Sudeikis) ends up heading back to Kansas at season’s end (and, of course, the even larger if of Apple TV+ continuing its biggest show even if its title character isn’t there anymore).

"Ted Lasso"'s Billy Harris knows some fans have been waiting a long time for this. Harris plays Colin Hughes, a Welsh left winger for the shows's fictional AFC Richmond. In the third episode of season two, Colin makes a passing comment about Grindr, which goes unremarked on by the rest of the team. But some fans - especially LGBTQ+ ones - thought the show was laying the seeds before ultimately revealing Colin is queer. And in season three, the show reveals that Colin is gay, though he's still hesitant about coming out publicly. Harris tells Popsugar that he had "so many interactions" with fans about Colin's Grindr line, and he was glad that the show validated their theories this season.
He especially cherishes the sixth episode of this season, where Colin has a heart-to-heart with Trent Crimm (James Lance), who's also queer. Colin is tired of living what he calls two lives,...

“Ted Lasso” character Colin Hughes has had more time in the spotlight in Season 3 since he was revealed to be gay — and the development made sense to the actor playing him, Billy Harris. He said he began seeing the writing on the wall in Season 2.
Early on in Season 3, Colin is revealed to audiences to be gay, but his teammates don’t yet know. Journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance), who himself is gay, catches Colin kissing another man outside of Sam’s (Toheeb Jimoh) restaurant, and he confronts Colin about it. Isaac (Kola Bokinni) is also getting a sense that his teammate may be hiding his sexuality.
“From Series 1 to Series 3, now you’re, seeing the real side of him,” Harris told TheWrap at a “Ted Lasso” FYC event in Hollywood on Monday. “I think there’s something that he’s using and I think it could be comedy — sometimes...

It’s fair to say that Ted Lasso has been something of a phenomenon, and continues to grip and entertain viewers as it reaches its third season, which is underway now on Apple TV+. Halfway through the season, which has episodes launching weekly on the platform, we had the pleasure in speaking with many of the familiar faces and affable characters that make up this heartwarming, and progressive comedy series.
Below you can find our interviews with Phil Dunster (Jamie), Nick Mohammed (Nathan), as well as Jeremy Swift (Leslie) and James Lance (Trent) together,. before ending with a grouped interview with three of Richmond’s finest, Cristo Fernandez (Dani), Kola Bokinni (Isaac) & Billy Harris (Colin).
We discuss all manner of things, from fan engagement, to eggs, to meeting the President of the United States of America, to the film’s forward-thinking narratives, and how the show can help impact the world we live in today.

Life and art certainly do imitate each other sometimes, and that beautiful kind of synergy is happening right now on the third season of "Ted Lasso." The sports landscape has started to change in recent years, with more and more athletes feeling comfortable divulging their sexuality publicly and largely being embraced for doing so. In episode three, Colin (Billy Harris) thinks it's time to come out, and the series handles it with a great deal of sensitivity, introducing us to Colin's partner Michael (Luke Ashton) in a very sweet exchange. In a show that's largely about acceptance and positivity, it's about time for a moment like this to be given proper attention, and the show is better for it.
The soccer world is definitely having a moment right now and the timing of Colin's arc feels a little like kismet. The sport itself may not always be represented as realistically...

When TV shows and movies talk about "coming out," there are a few things they don't tend to talk about. One of them is that coming out is different for everyone, and for many people, it's a process — sometimes a lifelong one. The idea that a character can come out over the course of a single episode and be perfectly accepted by both others and themselves is delightful, but for some of us, it's sheer fantasy.
In reality, queer and trans people have the choice to come out or allow themselves to be labeled as straight or cis again and again, not just among family and friends but also in public, at work, and even in online spaces. We can write a letter to our loved ones or wear a pride pin that explains our identity, but as...

[This story contains spoilers for “Sunflowers,” episode six of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
Ted Lasso watchers have speculated that AFC Richmond player Colin Hughes (Billy Harris) is gay since early in season two, and those suspicions were confirmed in season three’s third episode.
With the April 19 episode, “Sunflowers,” Colin’s story took a big step forward as he acknowledged his sexuality — and the way he deals with living a closeted life among his teammates — to journalist Trent Crimm (James Lance) while the Richmond players had a night off in Amsterdam. Trent then shares with Colin that he’s gay as well, opening the door for Colin to — perhaps — tell his teammates and coaches.
“I think with Ted Lasso, you can understand exactly why footballers or sports stars would want to hide their true identity,” Harris tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Their work life is tough enough. … In this world, you’re never far from someone that’s going to make a joke like that.

Does something feel different today? Is the air a little fresher, or maybe the sun's a bit brighter? I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it might have something to do with the singular exhilaration of finishing an episode of "Ted Lasso" and actually feeling joy for the first time all season.
The third and possibly final season of "Ted Lasso" got off to a rocky start this year, and while fans of the series have been steadily getting on board with the show's new normal in recent weeks, I think we can safely consider episode six the point at which "Ted Lasso" fully got its groove back. [This story contains spoilers for “Sunflowers,” the sixth episode of Ted Lasso’s third season.]
AFC Richmond has been in a funk since losing to West Ham two episodes back on Ted Lasso, with only a couple of draws to show for their work and a dispiriting slide down to the middle of the Premier League table.
Will a trip to the continent get things back on track? On the pitch, decidedly not — the team loses a friendly by the frightening score of 5-0 to Dutch power Ajax (one of Zava’s many former clubs, apparently; a photo in the stadium commemorates his tenure there, “2013-2013”). Afterward, though? Ted (Jason Sudeikis) declares a curfew-free night in Amsterdam for everyone, and what follows is reminiscent of season two’s (very good, no arguments considered) “Beard After Hours,” but following most of the principals (save Keeley, who jets off to see the Northern Lights with Jack early on and isn’t seen again).

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 6 of “Ted Lasso,” now streaming on Apple TV+.
Shortly before Billy Harris landed the role of footballer Colin Hughes on the Apple TV+ smash “Ted Lasso,” he found himself without an agent. Rather than be discouraged, though, he sent a note to casting director Theo Park to let them know to keep him in mind for an upcoming project. “Lo and behold, a day later, this email came in about a show called ‘Ted Lasso,’” Harris recalls. Harris had only recently graduated from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and the show marked his television debut. Though little was known about the character in the first season, the actor relished the opportunity to learn the ropes from what he calls “the best of the best.”
Now in its third season, Harris finds himself at the epicenter of a major storyline on the show.

When James Lance read the name of his “Ted Lasso” character Trent Crimm, he did not think that was the name of a bully. But the “Independent” journalist’s behavior cast him as a shadow over the Apple TV+ series’ optimistic tone.
The actor took TheWrap behind the scenes of his performance of the journalist, who has traded in tabloids and deadlines for a more long-term project writing a book about AFC Richmond. Specifically, Lance traces the core of his character back to a conversation he had with creator Jason Sudeikis during Season 1.
“We had a three-minute conversation in the car park. I said, ‘Hey, I think the reason he’s the way he is, is because he’s got this kind of oppressive father,” Lance told TheWrap. “And he was like, ‘you know, this whole season this whole series,...

The episode “4-5-1” opens and closes with a secondary character we haven’t spent much time with. Colin (Billy Harris), like many of the players not named Jamie or Sam, has long been merely a background teammate. That changes here. For all of a sudden, Ted Lasso is wading into the “no homo” territory that so continues…...

Ted Lasso, Apple TV+’s hit series from Bill Lawrence, returned for season 3 on March 15. The series quickly became a standout for its humor, sincerity, and refreshing take on mental health when it premiered in 2020. Ted, played by Jason Sudeikis, spent much of the first two seasons of the show addressing his mental health, and now the cast has brought their “Believe” motto to the White House.
Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso | Apple TV+ ‘Ted Lasso’ characters and mental health
At first glance, Ted Lasso seems like a heartfelt show about a fish-out-of-water American football coach taking on a job across the pond coaching AFC Richmond. Sudeikis, in his role as the titular character, constantly has a smile on his face. However, as the show progresses, audiences learn about his mental health. Ted suffers a panic attack in the middle of a big game, and he hesitates to address the issue.
