"Minority Report" was shot before the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, but you wouldn't know it. Director Steven Spielberg's 2002 adaptation of Philip K. Dick's 1956 sci-fi novella "The Minority Report" plays almost like a direct response to the post-9/11 War on Terror, in particular the Bush doctrine of preemptive strikes. Set in a version of 2054 where three psychics known as "precogs" are used to locate and arrest people before they commit murder, "Minority Report" wrestles with the concept of free will, in the process raising big questions about due process and profiling. Even the movie's "happy" ending leaves some room for uncertainty about what's to come in the future.
At the same time, "Minority Report" is a blast and a half. Amidst its many weird, creepy moments and noir mystery plot, Spielberg serves up some of the most whiz-bang action scenes he's ever directed. From a bare-knuckle brawl in the...

Bob Yari’s startup mini-major Magenta Light Studios has found its first in-house film production in “Summerhouse,” a period drama set against the anxiety of the Vietnam War.
“Bombshell” and “Halloween” star Malcolm McDowell will lead the project with Jacob Ward, an up-and-comer who made his debut in Ray Romano’s 2022 film “Somewhere in Queens.” Ed Kaplan (“2 Graves in the Desert”) will write the script and direct, with Shelly Jonson as director of photography.
Production will begin in Connecticut this month. Moonstone Entertainment will represent the international sales, previewing for buyers out of Cannes’ Marche du Film.
“Summerhouse” follows college grad Ned Stern (Ward) awaiting his draft into the Vietnam War. Ned spends his last summer of freedom caring for a belligerent wealthy alcoholic man (McDowell) at his lakeside mansion, only to find himself falling in love with a free-spirited and wild girl while questioning his commitment to his country.

Netflix’s new Hitchcockian thriller Windfallstars three actors you’ve definitely seen before — and perhaps even in the same movie together. But first, the scene: The film follows a series of (unfortunate) events that transpire when a robber is caught burgling a billionaire CEO’s idyllic vacation home. When the tech mogul and his wife show up unexpectedly for a weekend away, the robber’s plan goes awry. Windfallwas directed by Charlie McDowell and based on a story by McDowell and his leading actor, Jason Segel, and screenwriters Andrew Kevin Walker and Justin Lader.
Segel stars alongside The Power of the Dog’s Jesse Plemons in their second Charlie McDowell film — the two appear in his 2017 sci-fi thriller The Discovery — and Netflix leading lady Lily Collins, aka Emily in Paris herself. After more than two years in development, Charlie McDowell was nearly ready to direct his third feature. This one was going to be set all over New York, a step up in budget and in scope. But then came Covid, and the film, like everything else, was put on indefinite hold. “The question for myself and friends who are artists was, ‘How do we continue to make stuff?’ ” McDowell tells Tudum. The answer came a couple months into the pandemic. During a video chat with several friends and frequent collaborators — McDowell’s writing partner, Justin Lader; the actor Jason Segel; and the writer Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) — Segel suggested that the group write a film specifically set in a location where a small cast and crew could safely isolate.

Stanley Kubrick's 1971 dystopian sci-fi film "A Clockwork Orange" points out that a modern British society -- so devoted to stuffy manners, politeness, and keeping evil out of sight -- won't know how to deal with legitimate sociopaths. Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) is a violent little punk who regularly leads his teen gang -- the Droogs -- into fights, into bars that serve drug-laced milk, and into the locked homes of their victims. Alex beats and assaults people without a scrap of conscience, and sees the world as something to consume, use up, and have sex with. Kubrick toys with the audience a little, presenting Alex as charismatic and funny, even though he's a monster.
When Alex is finally apprehended for his many crimes, the juvenile delinquent is thrown into prison and subjected to a new kind of rehabilitation technique ... involving movies. Alex has his eyes clamped open and he...

May 11, 1994 saw the release of Alex Proyas’ The Crow, and cinema was never the same. And now, 30 years later, we’re finally being treated to the definitive version on 4K Uhd. You know what big fans of physical media we are here at JoBlo so we’ve been highly anticipating this release. And we also Looooove The Crow. We’ve covered it on our JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube Channel and have even taken a look at its terrible sequels. Heck, I’m not sure about you guys but The Crow was one of those films I always loved to talk about on the old JoBlo forums. I wonder what they’d be saying about the new film?
And shoutout to those that were able to snag the very cool Steelbook that went quickly out of print. It’s easily one of the coolest Steelbooks out there and features an absolutely beautiful design.

I love me some damn dirty apes, and I’m not alone. Ever since the first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most consistent (on a quality level) franchises. Think about it. Has there ever really been a lousy Planet of the Apes movie? Not really. Yet, it’s often unheralded when we talk about the great franchises. So, let’s look at the series as a whole, with this Planet of the Apes movies ranked list (from worst to best). And don’t worry – you’ll get to have your say tomorrow with a poll I’ll be publishing, so check back for that.

For anyone who watches “The Way Home” knows that sometimes, it can get a little confusing with so many different time periods going on at once. That’s the case for the executive producers too. During an FYC panel for the hit Hallmark Channel series on May 8, the showrunners admitted that it takes a lot of work and research to keep everything straight.
“We start at the end and then kind of work backward. We had a wonderful plan right from the start when Marly Reed created the show and wrote a beautiful bible for it. Alex and I were just so lucky to be part of it and develop it,” said co-showrunner Heather Conkie, referring to her daughter and co-showrunner, Alexandra Clarke. “We really had a three, four, five-year plan? And we’re now working on the third year. We see what worked from the first two years and it’s a process.

José Donoso’s The Obscene Bird of Night is a monument of vulgarity and erudition, perfused by an eerie air of alluring, unsettling ambiguity. An intensely oneiric work, it was originally published in 1970 and is now being released in a new unabridged translation by Megan McDowell for New Directions that constitutes a major literary event.
Donoso’s novel attempts to give decisive language to the ineffable. It’s the progeny of Borges, its language as technically adroit and stunning as Gabriel García Márquez’s. But instead of lovely, tragic lyricism, Donoso spins wicked sentences, suggesting a corruption of Marquez’s romanticism.
The Obscene Bird of Night is defined by its unexpected swoops into surrealism and litany of exciting developments and imagery. The ridiculous isn’t rendered believable, as Donoso’s prose is governed by the logic of a realm that exists only in the mind of our ever-ruminating, ever-rambling, and quite unreliable narrator,...

Beetlejuice might never have seen the light of day if producer Larry Wilson had listened to some executives at Universal Studios. The film was written keeping ghost stories and horror tropes in mind. Michael McDowell created the characters of Beetlejuice in a bid to twist the common convention of a good family finding itself haunted by evil ghosts.

Beetlejuice was an important film for Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, essentially propelling them into the mainstream. However, it seems executives at Universal were not that keen on making the film, questioning why an up-and-coming exec like Wilson would even look into something like Beetlejuice.
A “prominent executive” did not want Larry Wilson to go ahead with the script

The film, after Larry Wilson had a chance to go through the script, ended up at the desk of Universal Pictures.

Directed by Tinto Brass from a screenplay by Gore Vidal (which many people tinkered with while bringing it to the screen), the 1979 film Caligula was the most expensive independent film in cinema history – but the story told in the film was overshadowed by the behind-the-scenes story. As a press release notes, “Penthouse founder (and the film’s financer) Bob Guccione seized control of the negative, randomly inserting graphic scenes of unsimulated sex and gratuitous violence. The cast and film team disavowed what had become a blatant desecration of Vidal’s themes, and Vidal sued to have his name removed from the project. The extensive coverage of behind-the-scenes notoriety also had an unexpected effect: the film was a box office success.” Last year, Caligula: The Ultimate Cut had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and this version of the movie was described as a “miraculous reconstruction” that is “comprised of 100% of never-before-seen footage,...

If you’ve watched Russell Chuck’s 1988 movie The Blob as a kid, my sympathies. Anybody who has seen the movie is bound to be uncomfortable at the mention of blobs throughout their lives. Netflix’s Files of the Unexplained takes you to a small town in Washington where mysterious blobs fell out of the sky in the early 90s.
What Happened In Oakville?
From August 7, 1994, a series of rainy days began in Oakville. Oakville residents Sunny Barclift and her mother noticed small, transparent, gelatinous blobs falling from the sky along with the rain. Sunny and her mother thought the rain looked ‘thick.’ When her mother fell ill after touching the substance, Sunny decided to conduct tests on it. The blobs float in water, dissolve in alcohol but don’t break down, and have zero flammability. Soon after Sunny’s mother fell ill, reports of other people in town falling...

As a brief prologue, we must remind ourselves how Rotten Tomatoes works. When a critic submits a written review to the Rt aggregate, they are asked to deem that review either "fresh" or "rotten." The critic typically gets to make the distinction, meaning a 2.5-star review can be either positive or negative, based on who is submitting it. It's based on pass/fail grades. Rotten Tomatoes will then create a percentage of "positive" reviews. If 60% or more of the submitted reviews are positive, the film is deemed "fresh." If 59% or fewer are positive, it's "rotten."
If a film has, say, a 73% approval rating, it doesn't mean that every critic gave it a 73 out of 100. It only means that 73% of the submitted reviews are positive.
All that said, some films receive such low approval ratings that one might be able to draw some logical conclusions about the film being rated. A...

David Carson's 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations" has a farfetched premise, even by Trek's own outlandish standards. It seems there is a mysterious energy ribbon called the Nexus that periodically floats through the galaxy. The Nexus destroys any starships it encounters but also sweeps living beings into its own mysterious pocket dimension. The Nexus' pocket dimension is essentially Heaven, where its victims live out their happiest memories. Time also stands still in the Nexus, allowing its inhabitants to remain there eternally.
The physical existence of Heaven, one might think, would be a heady concept for a humanist franchise like "Star Trek." How would the universe react if Heaven was in a physical location one could visit? One might think there would be a mad dash to get there as soon as possible, rapidly depleting the galaxy's population.

If you’re like me and haven’t heard of CBC’s Son of a Critch, I hope to change that. Like The Goldbergs, this sitcom is based on the life of its creator and also happens to be set in the 80s. But if there’s one thing missing from that show that Critch has in spades, it’s Malcolm McDowell. The actor has had such a storied career that seeing him in a sitcom is surprising. Yet everything about it works, and he looks to be having an absolute blast. So I was excited to be able to talk to both McDowell and the series creator, Mark Critch, about their show. I watched the first two episodes of the new season, and this kind of show is right up my alley. Very light-hearted, it has a bit of a Wonder Years vibe, and I love the “on-the-nose” narration.

Few franchises are as controversial as the feel-good Christmas family comedy "Home Alone." The first two films are widely beloved, bonafide staples of the American Christmas movie canon. However, the subsequent sequels — of which there are many — are almost universally despised. Most people haven't seen all of the "Home Alone" movies, and they might be left wondering — are any of the follow-up films worth watching?
Some feel that Macaulay Culkin leaving the franchise after the second film is what set the subsequent movies up for failure. In this critic's opinion, the "Home Alone" entries 3-6 suffer from a lot more than bad casting. However, I watched every "Home Alone" movie so you didn't have to, and I am here to answer some age-old questions. Firstly, is "Home Alone 2" better than the original? And secondly, are any of the follow-up films worth watching? My answer might surprise you.

There are a lot of intense fandoms out there, but few have been as intense for as long as the "Star Trek" fandom, which has been going strong since 1966. There are few things more sacred to Trekkies than their starship captains, and in 1994, the franchise committed a serious sin by killing off the beloved James Tiberius Kirk, played by William Shatner, in the film "Star Trek: Generations." It was supposed to be a kind of passing of the baton from Kirk to Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, but in the end all it did was upset fans. Of course, they knew that the seemingly immortal Kirk would eventually die, but they didn't really want or need to see it, and that led to a whole lot of anger directed at the man responsible for Kirk's death: Dr. Tolian Soran, played by Malcolm McDowell.

Based on the novel by Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" is set in the not-too-distant future when roving British teenage gangs have mutated into bizarre, ultra-violent, morals-free hedonists who commit crimes to their hearts' content. Director Tim Burton was only a day and a half from being able to wrap production on his latest movie, Beetlejuice 2 – which, of course, happens to be the long-awaited (it’s been thirty-five years!) sequel to his classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here) – when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit in July. When the strike ended earlier this month, Beetlejuice 2 was able to go back into production. Now Burton has taken to Instagram to celebrate the end of filming by sharing a picture of himself sitting on a familiar set. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
The SAG strike delay was very minor compared to what this project has been through over the years. Beetlejuice 2 was in development hell for decades. Back in March, film journalist Jeff Sneider said he had heard that “an aging action star” was up for the role of a ghost in director Tim Burton‘s Beetlejuice 2 – which, of course, happens to be the long-awaited (it’s been thirty-five years!) sequel to his classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here). Sneider heard Jean-Claude Van Damme was in the running to play the character… but over the eight months since, we haven’t heard anything that indicates Van Damme actually made it to the set of Beetlejuice 2. We do know that Willem Dafoe plays an afterlife detective in the film – and during a new interview with Variety, he revealed that his character also happens to be a former action star!
Dafoe said, “I haven’t seen any footage (from Beetlejuice 2) yet, but it was fun to do. I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I’m a dead person.

Director Tim Burton was less than two days from being able to wrap production on his latest movie, Beetlejuice 2 – which, of course, happens to be the long-awaited (it’s been thirty-five years!) sequels to his classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here), when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit in July. Production had to be paused for months. But the SAG strike came to an end earlier this month, and now Wbz News reports that Burton and his cast and crew were able to return to the town of Melrose, Massachusetts and cover the place in Halloween decorations for a couple days of filming. Beetlejuice 2 has since wrapped, finally.

The Story: H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) does the impossible – after writing about a time machine he actually builds one. Too bad then that one of his dearest friends is secretly Jack the Ripper (David Warner) and uses the machine to escape justice by going into the future – 1979 San Francisco to be exact. Left with no choice and believing that he’s unleashed a monster upon a utopia (ha!), Wells pursues him through time, but winds up being a lot more out of his element than his nemesis.
The Players: Starring Malcolm McDowell, David Warner & Mary Steenburgen. Written and directed by Nicholas Meyer.
Oh, I love that part. I love that film, actually. Well of course, I was in love during the filmmaking—how could you not love the damn film? And I’ve always loved San Francisco since. – Malcolm McDowell – Random Roles

In “Caligula: The Ultimate Cut,” absolute power corrupts absolutely, but even using absolutely all of the footage shot for the notorious production back in 1976 does not necessarily result in a better film. The most expensive independent film ever produced until that time, “Caligula” was conceived by late Penthouse founder Bob Guccione as a sexually explicit film that also featured real actors and high production values; hiring bestselling author Gore Vidal to write a script for Italian avant-garde director Tinto Brass (“Salon Kitty”), Guccione subsequently attracted such respected thespians as Malcolm McDowell, Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud and Helen Mirren to star. But after disputes between Brass and Vidal prompted the author to sue to remove his name from the film, Guccione commandeered final cut and inserted shots of graphic sex and violence, prompting cast and crew alike to disavow the film.

Tory Lanez’s request to stay out of prison as he appeals his conviction was denied in criminal court in Los Angeles on Thursday, over a month after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion (real name Megan Pete).
Appearing in court for the decision on Thursday, Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is currently appealing to overturn his conviction over the shooting. Peterson’s attorneys motioned for a bail release earlier this month as he awaits the appeal decision, as journalist Meghann Cuniff reported.

Thirty-five years after the release of the Tim Burton-directed classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here), Burton has been working on the long-awaited sequel we’re calling Beetlejuice 2, and as part of the production he once again turned the town of East Corinth, Vermont into Winter River, Connecticut. The house the first movie took place in has been rebuilt, and pictures taken by fans revealed that an iconic sculpture featured in that movie was sitting outside the house. Unfortunately, that sculpture has since been stolen!
The Vermont State Police are looking for the sculpture and a pumpkin-topped lamp post that was also stolen from the set:
We tried saying the name of this stolen statue three times, but it didn't come back! We're investigating the theft of this 150-pound sculpture from the "Beetlejuice 2" set in E. Corinth, along with a lamppost topped with a pumpkin decoration. Call 802-748-3111 with any info.

Rockstars appearing in movies is not rare, but they don’t often have leading roles. The Beatles had a few films starring themselves, such as A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, and accompanied by a stellar soundtrack. Mick Jagger also has a minor acting career, but he wanted to go big by starring in the lead role in a Stanley Kubrick classic, and The Beatles backed his ambitions.
The Beatles signed a letter saying Mick Jagger should play the lead in ‘A Clockwork Orange’
1971’s A Clockwork Orange was directed by Stanley Kubrick and starred Malcolm McDowell in the lead role. Based on a novel by Anthony Burgess, the film centers around Alex, a young, violent delinquent who is jailed and subjected to behavior modification techniques. He returns to the world, cured, but is punished by the victims he wronged in his past.

It’s been a long wait, but director Tim Burton is finally heading into production on a sequel to his 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here) – and he’s assembling a cast that looks to guarantee that Beetlejuice 2 is going to be worth the wait. Not only is Michael Keaton reprising the role of the titular ghoul and Winona Ryder returning to play the “strange and unusual” Lydia Deetz, with Catherine O’Hara back as Lydia’s stepmother Delia, but new additions include Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter, Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s wife, and Justin Theroux in an unspecified role. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Bee–ah, that was a close one! A massive success upon release, Beetlejuice went through a strange and unusual production that saw multiple rewrites and firings, not to mention the dodging of some seriously questionable casting choices. But through the terrific performances by its cast and creative skirting around a small budget, the movie became one of the best horror-comedies ever, worthy of a sequel that has been in development hell for over three decades.
So let’s open up the handbook for the recently deceased and shake, shake, shake senora because it’s showtime! Let’s to find out…Wtf Happened to this movie?!
Following the massive success of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, which pulled in $40 million on a $7 million budget, Tim Burton had his pick of what his next project would be. One thing he knew, it wouldn’t be talking horse movie Hot to Trot.

Eleven days ago, we heard that Wednesday and Scream VI star Jenna Ortega is circling a role in director Tim Burton’s long-awaited Beetlejuice 2, which is apparently finally on the edge of going into production, thirty-five years after the first film was released. Ortega would be joining returning Beetlejuice stars Michael Keaton (as the title character), Winona Ryder (as Lydia Deetz), and Catherine O’Hara (as Lydia’s stepmother Delia), and she would be playing Lydia’s daughter. Film journalist Jeff Sneider heard the Ortega rumor a couple weeks before it went public – and during an episode of the podcast The Hot Mic, which he hosts with critic John Rocha, Sneider revealed that he has also heard “an aging action star” is in the running to play a ghost in the film. And that action star might be Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The invigorating success of both Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin’s television and film careers over the last few years cannot be overstated. About a decade ago both legends found themselves in a position to move back to the top of the call sheet. This mutual resurgence hit an inflection point with the Netflix show Grace & Frankie, an incredibly successful sitcom that finished with its seventh season only last year.
The duo pair up again in the Paul Weitz tragi-comedy Moving On. The picture opens at the wake of an old friend of both Claire (Fonda) and Evelyn (Tomlin). Minutes after her arrival, a quiet Claire informs her dead friend’s widow Howard (Malcolm McDowell) that she plans to kill him. We gather he committed some unnamed atrocity on her many years before. In due time the movie will reveal how terrible it was and what she plans to do about it.

This article contains spoilers for season 1 of "Poker Face."
"Poker Face" is a formulaic show, and that's not a complaint. In a TV landscape where everything feels increasingly serialized, there's something refreshing about a simple case-of-the-week style detective show. Every episode has the same basic format: we watch as a murder scenario plays out, we cut back to reveal how the on-the-run drifter Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) was nearby at the time, and then we watch as Charlie slowly figures out the situation. Once she does, she then has to figure out how to get justice without putting herself back on the grid.
That might sound repetitive, but "Poker Face" always seems to find a fresh way to play with the formula. Sometimes the victim in the opening sequence turns out to be Charlie herself (long story there), or sometimes another character figures out the mystery before Charlie does. Perhaps the biggest twist to the format,...
