He was an outspoken socialist and pacifist who strongly opposed the Vietnam War and nuclear weapons. He was a leader of the War Resisters League, and led antiwar demonstrations where he joined other men in burning their draft cards, defying a federal law that could have sent him to prison for five years with a $10,000 fine. He was also one of the first openly gay candidates to run for Congress and president.
