All’s quiet the night before Christmas, but John Woo is ready to enter with a bloody bang.
Woo’s first U.S. film in 20 years, “Silent Night,” stars Joel Kinnaman as a dad who witnesses his son die on Christmas Eve amid a shootout. The almost dialogue-less film co-stars Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, and Harold Torres.
The gritty revenge tale follows a tormented father (Kinnaman) who witnesses his young son die when caught in a gang’s crossfire on Christmas Eve. While recovering from a wound that costs him his voice, he makes vengeance his life’s mission and embarks on a punishing training regimen in order to avenge his son’s death.
The original screenplay is written by Robert Archer Lynn.
“It was a very smart script and the story really touched me [because] I have three children,” Woo told Entertainment Weekly. “The biggest challenge is...

Capstone Global and Hammerstone Studios will be presenting the psychological thriller Sympathy for the Devil to potential buyers at the European Film Market later this month, and in anticipation of that presentation they have unveiled the first image from the film! This image shows the characters played by stars Nicolas Cage (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) and Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad), and you can check it out at the bottom of this article. (With thanks to Deadline.)
Directed by Yuval Adler (The Operative) from a screenplay by Luke Paradise (Lost on a Mountain in Maine), Sympathy for the Devil follows “The Driver” (Kinnaman), who finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse after being forced to drive a mysterious man, “The Passenger” (Cage). As their white-knuckle ride progresses, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
That sounds very interesting to me.

For their mask-free, post-covid return, the Cannes and Venice film festivals played to their strengths: doubling down on red carpet glamour and old-world elegance.
Cannes’ jaw-dropping display for Top Gun: Maverick — including a supersonic flyover courtesy of the French air force — reestablished the Gallic fest as the go-to location for the launch of big-ticket tentpoles.
Venice’s combination of classy backdrop — celebrities arriving by boat behind the Hotel Excelsior — and up-close fan connection — the teen crowds camped out on the Lido red carpet — made it the ideal stage to present this year’s most anticipated art house features, including Todd Field’s Tár starring Cate Blanchett, Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale with Brendan Fraser, both of which are already Oscar frontrunners, and more eclectic offerings, including Bones and All, Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal love story starring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell.
