I’d like to kick this week’s column off with a pair of television recommendations: one a smart and stylish contemporary series that’s currently streaming, the other a retrospective pick on DVD that deserves to be better known. Stitchers puts an ingenious spin on one of the most shopworn of all television genres, the procedural, breathing new life into the form via an elegant visual style and audacious premise. The show follows Kirsten Clark (Emma Ishta), a Caltech student with a medical condition that wreaks havoc on her sense of time. It also makes her a desirable candidate for a covert […]...

Three episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
In a post-Hunger Games world, Stitchers, which returns to Freeform for its second season on March 22, should be hitting the jackpot. With a mythology that is part CSI and part Minority Report, as well as a heroine who is prickly, beautiful and destined to save the world, it seems as though the series is set to ride the wave that modern Ya fiction has created – right into the hearts of Freeform’s engaged teen viewers.
However, while the show might sound like a hit on paper, the result is a messy combination of ambiguous plot points and a tone that, unfortunately, talks down to its audience. There are plenty of examples of smart, mythology-heavy procedurals made for teens, but Stitchers just isn’t one of them.

Season 2 of Freeform's first-ever procedural drama Stitchers begins on March 22. Its freshman season took some time to find its footing and develop characters into people the audience could care about. However, by the finale, fans were fully invested and clinging to their seats to not only see Kirsten Clark try and find her own humanity, but to get to the bottom of her mysterious past. While holding the fun of a procedural drama, Stitchers also keeps Kirsten's story as an underlying theme that continues all season long. This story continues in season 2 and wastes no more time with drawn out character introductions. We know who we're dealing with, and finally the TV show moves at the faster pace and with the growth of characters we've been waiting to see. Check out our review of Stitchers season 2.
