Robert California was one of the few characters on "The Office" that fans seem to either love or hate. The workplace sitcom is filled with "people we know," and several of us have dealt with prickly co-workers similar to Angela (Angela Martin) or people like Stanley (Leslie David Baker), who hate their jobs and live for pretzel day. Many of us have also rooted for obvious workplace romances like Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer).
But Robert California? One of these things is not like the other, as few of us have likely crossed paths with anyone like him. And for that, we can blame Michael Scott (of course we can). When Steve Carell left "The Office" after seven seasons, it left a gaping hole in the cast, and the show would eventually turn to James Spader as the new boss to fill the tremendous void Michael left. NBC’s American version of The Office wasn’t always a hit–it was actually almost canceled numerous times before a Christmas miracle came along in the form of, yes, a holiday episode.
Not long after NBC started putting The Office on iTunes, the show started to pick up viewers, hitting its high for the time with the season two episode “Christmas Party”. This proved a crucial moment. As Brian Baumgartner (M&m-loving Kevin Malone) put it, “We had declined rapidly and then came back and [that episode] really served as a significant event for us…And from there we really took off.”
Angela Kinsey (cat-loving Angela Martin) agreed. “After that episode aired, we were the number one streaming show on iTunes and all of a sudden we were like, ‘Hold up. We found our audience…It turned a corner from there and we were set.”

“The Office” was almost cancelled until their Christmas episode came along and warmed the hearts of fans everywhere, pushing it’s notoriety into the limelight.
Speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment, Brian Baumgartner and Angela Kinsey, who respectively played Kevin Malone and Angela Martin, told the story of how Christmas saved “The Office” from utter cancellation.
“We were almost canceled two, three, four, 10, 12 times at the beginning,” explained Brian. “We were struggling week to week,” Angela continued. The ratings “declined rapidly” since the pilot, “and then came back and [that episode] really served as a significant event for us,” Baumgartner said.

"I just want to be friends. Plus a little extra. Also, I love you." Ah, Dwight Shrute, always a way with words. It's clunky romantic exchanges like this that helped draw out one of modern television's best and most unorthodox love stories. The love story between Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly took center stage for the first several seasons of "The Office." But once their relationship was established, the show handed the baton to another couple.
Dwight Shrute and Angela Martin deftly carried the "will-they-won't-they?" sitcom trope all the way to the show's series finale. And while Jim and Pam's story might have been more traditional, Dwight and Angela's relationship was much more fun ... and salacious.
Along the way, cats were killed, babies were conceived, paternities were hidden, and affairs were had. The couple's tumultuous relationship began in season 2 and appeared to end in season 4 when Dwight killed Angela's cat Sprinkles.

With mockumentaries like "The Office," the viewer gets used to seeing talking heads against a variety of backgrounds. It gives the eye something different to look at so it's not just drinking in the same static scene each time. While the focus is on dialogue, and the offices of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company are somewhat nondescript, the talking head scenes in "The Office" actually contain a hidden clue about the fate of each character.
Since 2019, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey — who played Pam Beesly and Angela Martin on "The Office," respectively — have been going back through each episode of the show, offering their insights as cast members, on their "Office Ladies" podcast. Responding to a fan question in the episode on "Conflict Resolution," Fisher offered an interesting reveal about why John Krasinski's character, Jim Halpert, always seems to be sitting in front of a window to the outside world,...
