For creator, writer, director and co-showrunner Boots Riley, the idea for his Amazon Prime Video series “I’m a Virgo” came from “just wanting to talk about the differences between perception of people and how they perceive themselves.” Specifically, “if you saw a 13-foot-tall Black man walking down the street, the last thing most people would think about is what he thinks about himself, so I wanted to talk about that” and explore “people connecting to each other on a personal one-to-one level, but also on a societal level.”
But how did he turn lead actor Jharrel Jerome into that gentle giant? We gathered Riley and Jerome, along with costume designer Deirdra Elizabeth Govan, production designer Maxwell Orgell and visual effects supervisor Todd Perry for a special roundtable panel to discuss the making of the unique social satire. Watch it above.

On August 9, 2017, a TV show premiered with two huge names attached — Stephen King (one of the most successful writers alive) and David E. Kelley (one of the most successful TV creators alive) — and no one saw it. That show? Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel, the first in a trilogy about a detective named Bill Hodges and the psychopath that got away. But while your mileage may vary when it comes to the book — and the work of Kelley, who created shows like The Practice and Ally McBeal — neither of them are to blame. The problem was that it premiered on the Audience Network, a pay channel owned by AT&T that nobody knew how to find.
After the Audience Network folded in 2020, Mr. Mercedes, which somehow managed to get three full seasons, rolled over to Peacock. A good thing, too, as it’s got a cast to die for — Brendan Gleeson,...

“Definitely the most challenging thing I’ve had to do thus far as an actor, a lot of mental gymnastics involved,” Jharrel Jerome admits about the uniqueness of his role in the Boots Riley-created absurdist series I’m A Virgo, on which he plays a previously extremely sheltered 13-foot-tall Oakland teen. “At no point do I look my scene partners in the eye, and as an actor that’s so critical, you know, as connection.”
Jerome, an Emmy winner for When They See Us, was joined by Riley and co-stars Olivia Washington and Walton Goggins, plus costume designer Deirdra E. Govan, for a conversation about their series at Deadline Studio at Prime Experience.

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to either Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) or Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are David Oyelowo (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shogun”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”) and Andrew Scott (“Ripley”) — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, two our of six Emmy Experts predict a victory for Hamm: Peter Travers (ABC) and Ray Richmond (Gold Derby). He plays corrupt Sheriff Roy Tillman on Season 5 of FX’s quirky anthology series. Hamm has received 16 total Emmy nominations throughout his career for his work on “Mad Men,” “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,...

While the recent Madame Web introduced Spider-Women in live-action, another Marvel character who has yet to get a live-action depiction is Miles Morales. The character is a fan favorite and has already starred in Sony’s Spider-verse films. In the MCU, the character has been acknowledged, with Donald Glover’s Aaron Davis mentioning him in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
While Miles Morale is yet to be cast in the MCU, Black-ish actor Miles Brown seems to be the perfect fit. The nineteen-year-old actor and rapper has the same first name and has similar Black and Latino parentage. He has been vocal about his dream of playing the character in the MCU and has also met Tom Holland and Kevin Feige on the red carpet for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

While accepting her first-ever Spirit Award, Wong thanked her co-star Steven Yeun, who was also nominated in the gender-neutral category, as well as the series’ creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producer Jake Schreier. “I wouldn’t be here without you. Two years ago, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite began trending when the Television Academy failed to award any major acting trophies to people of color. The pendulum has swung, with this year’s ceremony awarding a record-breaking number of people of color across all major categories: drama, comedy, limited, reality and variety series — a first in the TV Academy’s history.

Just one year after HBO’s “Succession” broke new ground as the first drama series to ever receive four male guest acting Emmy nominations at once, the same network’s “The Last of Us” has matched the impressive feat. Included among those currently recognized for their special appearances on the post-apocalyptic video game adaptation is Lamar Johnson, who has built an extensive acting resume over the past 15 years. Having just turned 29 in July, he ranks as the fourth youngest Best Drama Guest Actor nominee ever and has a shot at becoming the category’s all-time youngest victor.
Johnson’s very first Emmy notice comes for his portrayal of Henry Burrell, a one-time government informant attempting to evade capture by ruthless resistance leader Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey). The 2024 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday morning (December 11), leaving several projected heavy-hitters for the upcoming Oscars off the slate. The most notable rejections were “The Color Purple,” which missed for Best Film Comedy/Musical and one of the movie’s stars, Taraji P. Henson, who was left off the ballot for Best Film Supporting Actress. The movie did manage to squeak out nominations for Fantasia Barrino in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress and Danielle Brooks for Best Film Supporting Actress.
Other major contenders that won’t compete include Best Film Drama contenders “Saltburn” and “The Iron Claw”, the screenplays for “American Fiction” and “The Holdovers” and the latter’s director, Alexander Payne.

After a four year hiatus, the IndieWire Honors returned with a bang on Wednesday night as some of the brightest stars and most brilliant minds in film and television convened in Hollywood to celebrate creative independence.
The event was hosted by comedian and “The Blackening” star, co-writer, and producer Dewayne Perkins, who lent his signature sense of humor to the evening as he handed out awards to IndieWire’s 10 curated honorees.
Todd Haynes received the Visionary Award in celebration of his 35 year filmmaking journey that saw him go from self-distributing his short films in New York City to becoming a leading voice of New Queer Cinema to directing this year’s Cannes hit “May December.”
Greta Gerwig was honored with the Auteur Award after applying her indie film creativity to “Barbie” helped turn the Mattel adaptation into the year’s biggest blockbuster.

Bold Speeches from Auteurs and Comfy Couches: IndieWire Honors 2023 Is the Awards Show Like No Other
IndieWire Honors recognized some of the biggest movies and TV shows of the year last night, including “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Beef,” and “John Wick: Chapter 4,” but the filmmakers’ speeches reflected how their current work couldn’t exist without the support they received early in their careers — much of it from IndieWire.
Todd Haynes, director of Netflix marquee title “May December,” accepted the Visionary Award with a memory of screening his breakout short “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” to rave reviews before the cease-and-desists from her estate rolled in. Greta Gerwig, writer-director of Warner Bros. global blockbuster “Barbie” and recipient of the Auteur Award, recalled doing her very first interviews with Anne Thompson for her solo directorial debut “Lady Bird” at Telluride.

Jharrel Jerome in “I’m a Virgo” may play a 13-foot tall giant, but as he receives accolades for his performance during this awards season, he says it’s important to remember the “little moments” along the way. The 26-year-old star is starting to dream both big and small.
“When you become an actor, I feel like you forget to dream of these little moments here. You dream of the big screen, you dream of the flashing lights, you dream about the big red carpets and the photos, but you forget about the intimate moments like this, when you get into a room with artists who are as passionate as you,” Jerome said upon accepting the Performance Prize at the IndieWire Honors ceremony on December 6. He added that he didn’t know what to expect stepping into NeueHouse Hollywood for the occasion. But seeing the intimate space, he said, “this is dope.

Lily Gladstone is the crown jewel of awards season so far, on her way to a likely Best Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Just last week, Gladstone earned the prestigious New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress, among many other honors already happening.
But at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, Lily Gladstone added the Performance Award to those accolades for her searing turn in Martin Scorsese’s crime drama. The Montana-born actress — who is of Piegan Blackfeet, Nez Perce, and European heritage — plays the real-life Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who played a pivotal but tragic role in exposing the systematic murder of wealthy Osage by white opportunists in 1920s Oklahoma.
Yet instead of only touting her acclaimed role in the Apple Original Films feature — her studio debut — she took to the IndieWire Honors stage to champion her indie film “Fancy Dance,...

Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie are the heads behind Showtime and A24’s mind-bending reality TV satire “The Curse,” currently heading into its fifth episode on December 10. But just a few days prior, the creative duo received the Wavelength Award at the IndieWire Honors event at NeueHouse Hollywood on December 6, hosted by Dewayne Perkins.
At the event, they were in characteristic improvisatory, slightly off-kilter (and off-putting) style, with “The Rehearsal” creator Fielder starting off his acceptance speech, in deadpan droll, “It’s very nice. Thank you so much for this. We both are big fans of this website and all the content. It’s such an honor to be given the Wavelength Award because, especially just speaking personally for someone like me, it’s very hard to get on the same wavelength as another person. Melina Matsoukas has already produced a body of impressive work before she even made the jump to scripted fiction, via her Grammy-winning music video work for massive stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé. And 2019’s “Queen & Slim,” as well as her work on TV shows like “Insecure” and “Master of None,” affirmed her talents as a visual stylist. This year, on the pilot of Apple TV+ series “The Changeling,” Matsoukas applied her gifts to a completely new aim: making a fairy tale.
For her work on the series, Matsoukas received the Auteur Award from IndieWire Honors, alongside “The Changeling” creator Kelly Marcel. Matsoukas appeared at the Los Angeles ceremony to accept the award on her and Marcel’s behalf. Cord Jefferson would love to stay and chat with his icons, but he’s in the midst of a long awards season and has to “talk to some strangers” about his debut feature “American Fiction.”
So upon accepting the Breakthrough Award at the IndieWire Honors ceremony on December 6 at NeueHouse Hollywood, he said he’s ducking out early not because he’s a “snob,” but because he cares deeply about his work and he wants to make sure he can keep meeting people he admires.
“I’m an artist, so I’m sensitive about my shit. That is 100 percent true. Don Cheadle, Michael Peña and Bobby Cannavale have now joined the cast.
In addition, Amazon MGM Studios will be distributing the movie, repping its second collaboration with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity in the wake of this year’s acclaimed Air. “American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
Hours away from attending the 33rd annual Gotham Awards as a nominee for both producing and acting in “I’m a Virgo,” an exuberant Jharrel Jerome, sitting inside The Beekman Hotel in New York, says “I’m ready to go do anything now.”
While he came off a couple of years out the spotlight with a whole surge of acclaimed 2023 projects like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and Max series “Full Circle,” it is the aforementioned Prime Video satire helmed by Boots Riley that’s earned him the Performance Award at IndieWire Honors on December 6 in Los Angeles, and become the most transformative experience for him — though playing the 13-foot-tall Cootie did not actually require putting the 5-foot-8-inch actor into the taffy puller.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the follow-up to Sony, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Marvel’s groundbreaking Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which won the Animated Feature Oscar in 2019.
Phil Lord returned to co-script the sequel with his Lord Miller cohort Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham. Joaquim Del Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Powers directed the ambitious sequel, which featured multiple animation styles and more than 280 variations of Spider-Man.
This plot centers on continuing the exploits of Miles Morales as Brooklyn’s own Spider-Man. Reunited with Gwen Stacy, he is catapulted across the Multiverse where he encounters a team of Spider-People — from Lego Spider-Man and Mumbattan’s Pavitr Prabhakar to the Daniel Kaluuya-voiced Spider-Punk — charged with protecting its existence. The Gotham Awards traditionally mark the unofficial beginning of Oscar season, giving the best and brightest of the independent film community the chance to descend upon New York City to celebrate the year’s best works. And while the ceremony once again kicks off the awards calendar with its Monday after Thanksgiving slot, new changes to the eligibility rules means that a wider range of films will be allowed to compete this year
In the past, only films that cost $35 million or less were eligible for the awards, which inevitably shut out some of the biggest Oscar contenders in order to highlight smaller films. But that cap was eliminated in 2023, allowing major productions such as “Barbie” and “Ferrari” to get in on the action. A total of 20 films, 11 series, and 30 performances were nominated for this year’s awards.

SEEGotham Awards will present ‘Ferrari’ with Icon and Creator Tribute for Innovation
A romantic drama about childhood friends separated for years, “Past Lives” is the front-runner for Best Feature and Breakthrough Director for its first-time filmmaker Celine Song. Could it achieve a clean sweep by winning its third nomination for lead performer Greta Lee? It’s possible, but she’s in a tight race with front-runner Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction“) for that award.

Jharrel Jerome isn't hiding behind self-doubt anymore. It might be hard to believe the 26-year-old - the youngest to ever win an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie - is anything less than confident, given the praise he's earned for his buzzy onscreen performances, which include the Oscar-winning "Moonlight" and critically acclaimed "When They See Us" miniseries.
