Texas-based LStar Capital, a subsidiary of private equity company Lone Star Funds, is pulling the plug on its $200 million slate financing deal with Sony Pictures, multiple individuals with knowledge of the situation have told TheWrap. LStar, which has been a financing partner on about 30 Sony films since closing its slate deal in 2014, has stopped making new contributions to the fund after suffering a series of box-office flops such as “The Brothers Grimsby,” “Concussion” and “Passengers,” according to one individual with knowledge of the situation. It’s unclear how much the company has already invested in the fund and how...

As has been the case over the last three weekends, this weekend is looking to outperform last year and, once again, by a significant margin. The big story, of course, is Disney's Beauty and the Beast as it continues to blow the doors off, becoming one of the fastest films to top $200 million at the domestic box office and, by the end of this weekend, will have topped $300 million in just ten days of release. In addition to Beauty and the Beast's second weekend, three new wide releases make their debut including Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's R-rated sci-fi Life and WB's R-rated comedy CHiPs, all of which will have varying degrees of success as the top twelve should top a combined $180 million, making it the second largest weekend of the year. As of Wednesday, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has brought in $217.6 million domestically and another $244.3 million internationally. This...

Sony Pictures Entertainment remained mum on losses from this summer's Ghostbusters in its earnings call on Tuesday, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter the considerable financial pain inflicted on the studio by the July reboot was magnified by the fact that key financing partner Lsc Film Corp. pulled its backing about a month before the film went into production. Lsc has invested in Sony movies since striking a deal with the studio in 2014, and has lost money on many, including The Brothers Grimsby, Money Monster and Aloha. The co-financier initially agreed to put up 25 percent of a

Gender swapping in remakes is becoming the new norm in Hollywood these day. With the all-female “Ghostbusters” and an “Ocean’s Eleven” starring Sandra Bullock on the way, MGM is adding a female-led “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” to the list.
Fresh off her “Absolutely Fabulous” cameo, Rebel Wilson has just committed to star in the remake of the 1988 comedy starring Steven Martin and Michael Caine. Per Variety, the updated version will bring con artistry to the 21st century and feature two female scam artists, one low rent and the other high class, who compete to swindle a naive tech prodigy out of his fortune.
The script is being written by Jac Schaeffer. Roger Birnbaum and Wilson are set to produce. No director is attached at the moment.

I would be more than happy to be up in the air with Mark Strong. If Sacha Baron Cohen were there as well, however, it might give me reason to fear for my life. We have an exclusive deleted scene from The Brothers Grimsby for your viewing pleasure below. It features both the Mr. Cohen and Mr. Strong, who always impresses me with the variety of his facial expressions. Here's the official synopsis: Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen), a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan, has everything a man from the poor fishing town of Grimsby could want, including nine children and the most attractive girlfriend in Northern England (Rebel Wilson). There's only one thing missing: his little brother, Sebastian (Mark Strong), who Nobby has spent...

He gave us Ali G, Borat and fermented horse urine, all on the way to establishing himself as the king of shock comedy. But his latest film, Grimsby, is a huge flop. Where did it all go wrong?
Earlier this year, I saw Grimsby, the new film by Sacha Baron Cohen, at the Cineworld above my local shopping centre. It had only come out that day, so the audience was big for a weekday afternoon. Not that big, though: I counted seven of us. There were a few scattered laughs, and the comic centrepiece – a scene best described as elephant bukkake – brought yelps of hysteria. Mostly, however, there was silence. Some time before the end, a phone went off. Its owner left to answer it. I heard him at the door as the film played on. “Don’t worry – it’s shit,” he said. “See you in Foot Locker.”
This was Britain.

Zootopia proved itself a box office champ as it entered its third week at the top with an estimated $38 million (and over $201.8 million in domestic gross). Its only real competition came from the third installment of The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which came in second place with an estimated $29.1 million. Excoriated by critics, it managed to top the mixed reviewed faith-based Miracles from Heaven, which opened with an estimated $15 million. As the only film in the top three to release its budget numbers officially ($13 million), Miracles from Heaven is likely to break even before too long, while Allegiant, if it cost anywhere near the $100+ million of the previous films, is going to have to rely heavily on foreign box office (which is nearly twice as high as the domestic totals).

While Zootopia prepares for its third straight week atop the weekend box office, a fresh batch of new releases are hoping to stake their own claim among the top ten. Among said new releases we have The Divergent Series: Allegiant, Miracles from Heaven, which debuted in second place on Wednesday, and Sony Classics' R-rated gymnast comedy The Bronze. For the third week in a row we'll start with Disney's Zootopia, which dropped only 31.6% last weekend and only 30% if you don't include the $1.7 million it took in from advanced preview screenings. More impressive is the fact the film actually performed significantly better over this past Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday than it did the week prior, as it is now just shy of $160 million domestically in 13 days of release. That said, it's adding another 132 theaters this weekend (3,959 in total) and a drop anywhere from 23-31% seems most likely for a third weekend haul anywhere from $35-39.5 million.

There are movies that bomb, and then there are movies that bomb hard. The Brothers Grimsby is one of the latter. Not only did it finish in eighth place in its opening weekend, but it actually had one of the worst opening weekends in the history of the industry. For films that have seen a release in at least 2,000 theaters The Brothers Grimsby is now number 36 on the list of worst openings ever. Box Office Mojo keeps track of all the current and historical box office business and it has all the numbers for the worst opening weekends dating back to 1982. While The Brothers Grimsby looks like an absolute blockbuster compared to last year.s Jem and the Holograms, which currently sits at number four on the same list, it opened with just over $3 million total, at an average of $1,409 per screen. What.s worse is that these numbers are...

Disney has a bona-fide hit on its hands again as Zootopia won the weekend box office for the second time in a row. While an estimated $50 million has added up to $142.6 million domestic gross, the film has picked up more than $431.3 million worldwide. The next biggest release was 10 Cloverfield Lane. Critically acclaimed, it opened to a much more modest weekend estimate of $25.2 million, but with an unreleased budget amount it is hard to tell whether it is a success or not…but with J.J. Abrams producing and Star Wars: The Force Awakens under his belt, chances are that even a loss will do little to diminish his stature in Hollywood.
Deadpool remained a strong contender with an estimated $10.8 million, giving it a domestic gross of $328.1 million over a $58 million budget, making it not only one of the top earning Marvel films or the highest-earning R-rated comic book adaptation of all-time,...

Two months ago, no one had heard of "10 Cloverfield Lane." Today, it's a smash hit.
The low-budget thriller, made by a first-time director and featuring no big box office draws, opened with an estimated $25.2 million. It beat three other new wide releases, none of which even managed to open in the top five. The only movie that could beat it was Disney's unstoppable cartoon "Zootopia," which lost a third of last weekend's business and still earned an estimated $50.0 million in its second weekend.
How did the "Cloverfield Lane" filmmakers and distributor Paramount pull off such a feat? Here are six ways the film became a stealth hit.
1. J.J. Abrams
By now, the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director is a one-man brand, even if, as in this case, he merely produced the film and didn't write or direct it. Fans know him for quality genre material, especially sci-fi action thrillers.

In a relatively uneventful weekend save for a great second weekend for Zootopia, falling only 33% the highest per screen averages went to two films starring 60something women -- Helen Mirren in Eye in the Sky and Sally Field in Hello My Name is Doris. How about that? I mean, they're only at a handful of screens in NY and La but perhaps they'll have decent futures.

For its second week, Disney’s Zootopia remained the number one film in North America. The animated feature crossed the $100 million mark on Friday and worldwide, Zootopia has already earned more than $431.3 million.
The Brothers Grimsby on the other hand, one of the weekend’s new openings earned an estimated $3.1 million from 2,235 locations making it the lowest debut of a major release so far this year. The R-rated comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen received a B+ from CinemaScore audiences, but I guess they didn’t want to put in the work to see the movie.
10 Cloverfield Lane had a strong debut this weekend. The J.J. Abrams produced thriller earned an estimated $25.2 million and had great reviews (91% on Rotten Tomatoes). All in thanks to John Goodman I bet. Deadpool, in its fifth week claimed another $10.8 million to bring its domestic total up to $328 million. Deadpool is third behind American Sniper on...

After his spy spoof “The Brothers Grimsby” landed with a $3.1 million thud at the box office this weekend, Sacha Baron Cohen may be thinking that he’s getting a little old for this movie comedy stuff. Not in real years, of course. The British actor is only 44, hardly a graybeard in Hollywood terms. But “Grimsby” is by far Baron Cohen’s worst movie opening. Its first-weekend haul is just a fraction of the money that his other R-rated comedy efforts — like 2006’s “Borat,” 2009’s “Bruno” and even 2011’s “The Dictator” — managed to make in their debuts. Disney's Zootopia dominated once again this weekend, bringing in an estimated $50 million in its sophomore session, pushing the film over $140 million domestically in its first ten days of release. Leading the weekend's four new wide releases is 10 Cloverfield Lane with a strong opening weekend performance while The Perfect Match, The Young Messiah and The Brothers Grimsby settled in slots six through eight in the weekend top ten. Dropping only 33.4%, Zootopia is the #1 film for the second weekend in a row as its domestic cume has now climbed to $142.6 million. Internationally the animated feature took in an additional $83.1 million, which is actually up 25% from last weekend. The jump is largely due to the estimated $56.5 million it brought in this weekend in China, an increase of a whopping 139% as its global cume now stands at $431.3 million. As far as the weekend's new releases are concerned, 10 Cloverfield Lane entered its opening weekend with incredibly strong reviews.

This is England: Leterrier Transports Raunchy, Nonsensical Comedy
If Adam Sandler was still interested in generating laughs, he might have eventually turned out something as ridiculous and outré as The Brothers Grimsby, another vehicle designed specifically by and for button pushing star Sacha Baron Cohen, in which he stars as another odd, social misfit bumbling about in his own particularly distressing comedy of errors fashion. Helmed by Louis Leterrier, (now completely divorced from the slickly serious Transporter realm, where he cut his teeth as an acolyte/product of Luc Besson before moving on to Hollywood fare with the 2008 The Incredible Hulk rehash), it’s a completely asinine, adolescently minded bit of perversity. It also happens to have its fair share of shockingly extravagant moments, and these, along with Cohen’s odd penchant for political subtexts and sometimes innocent charm makes his latest offering disarming, and surprisingly funny. Though it’s...

The spectrum of outrageousness in The Brothers Grimsby, Sacha Baron Cohen's uneven new comedy, could be said to be bracketed by two jokes: One is about an elephant's vagina. The other is about Donald Trump getting AIDS. You shouldn't consider either of those spoilers. Think instead that you've been offered the chance to kick the tires on a car before deciding whether you'd feel secure going for a ride. The elephant vagina joke is probably a classic example of the Baron Cohen brand of humor, which should be firmly stamped in the consciousness of anyone who saw Borat or Brüno.

“The Brothers Grimsby” is off to a grim start at the box office this weekend after grossing just $235,000 from 1,937 locations on Thursday night. J.J. Abrams‘ latest production, “10 Cloverfield Lane,” on the other hand, had an impressive start to its opening weekend. The thrilled scared up $1.8 million from approximately 2,500 locations. Tracking for a $20 million weekend, “10 Cloverfield Lane” isn’t a sequel to the 2008 breakout hit “Cloverfield,” despite its title. Sacha Baron Cohen is a very smart, very funny man. One of the best parts of his publicity tour for The Brothers Grimsby has been hearing him give interviews out of character about his process when working on Da Ali G Show, Borat, and Bruno. The worst part of it, unfortunately, is the movie The Brothers Grimsby, which is an entirely laughless affair and easily the low point of Cohen's career so far. No one is more shocked by my reaction to the movie than I am. I am an easy laugh. I'll admit it. I am predisposed to laughter. That's my natural state, my preferred condition. I love comedy. I love all forms of comedy. I love cerebral wordplay. I love silly physical slapstick. I love the gross. I love the esoteric. If you search through my collection, you'll find all kinds of things, and I love that. Every now and then,...

10 Cloverfield Lane is the latest mystery box thriller from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot and it's looking to top a list of four new wide releases this weekend. Additional new releases include Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy The Brothers Grimsby, the new faith-based feature The Young Messiah and the romantic-comedy The Perfect Match. All four will be competing with some strong holdovers, most notably Disney's Zootopia, which will be holding on to the top spot for a second week in a row, and Deadpool, which could top $10 million in its fifth weekend in release. Zootopia enters its second weekend in release after breaking the The Lorax's March opening weekend record for an animated film. As such, it seems appropriate to use The Lorax's 44.7% second weekend drop as a basis for comparison this weekend. On a daily basis Zootopia has performed well when compared to The Lorax, suggesting the smart money...

Crude, cruel, and uncalled-for in the best possible way, The Brothers Grimsby, like The Dictator, marks another evolution away from the guerilla theater that put Sacha Baron Cohen on the map as a sharp critic, provocateur, and button-pusher. His latest feature balances action and comedy, and, as one might expect, there’s a certain inherent cruelty that comes from the stunts. (One sequence involves bad gunshots leading to HIV infections.) While not everything lands — including a joke involving a certain Republican presidential front-runner — there are some gags one won’t be able to unsee for some time, making for a film that mostly delivers — even if you may not be proud of yourself for laughing.

Sacha Baron Cohen captured our hearts by fooling people through his use of mockumentary and making us laugh riotously. First on television as Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, and then when he brought the latter two characters to the big-screen. His latest, The Brothers Grimsby, follows 2012.s The Dictator by forsaking the mockumentary genre for a comedy narrative. And Cohen admitted that he actually misses filming in this style, explaining that the adrenaline rush he got while shooting these scenes can.t be replicated. Sacha Baron Cohen made this admission to me when I sat down to talk with him about The Brothers Grimsby. Sacha Baron Cohen has made a career out of creating anarchic comedy scenarios that make audiences howl with laughter while feverishly looking away. His latest cinematic jaunt, The Brothers Grimsby, is no different, and it arguably features the comedian’s most controversial and disgusting scene to date. Warning: There are some slight Spoilers for The Brothers Grimsby ahead. I don’t go into specifics, but don’t read on if you want to watch The Brothers Grimsby with absolutely no prior knowledge of its most riotous scene. Are they gone? Good. Apologies to any diehard fans, but the chances of a feature-length Neighbours movie are looking more remote by the day. The far-fetched Aussie soap’s place in the British public consciousness has become somewhat invisible, at odds with its Kylie and Jason heyday, leaving it to lecture-skipping students to enjoy with precious little company.

Originally, my interview with The Brothers Grimsby star Sacha Baron Cohen was supposed to be a little a lot different. Press were told that Cohen would be in-character as “Nobby” Butcher, and that he’d be positioned in a bed, alongside a model (rumored to be plus-sized). This was the interview I prepared for, as I horrifyingly imagined going toe-to-toe with one of the most fearless comedians of our time. All I knew was that’d I’d enter, offer a 16 oz. tallboy of whatever piss-water I purchased on the way over, and see where the beer-swilling got me.
Thanks to a last minute change, interviewers were given a rare opportunity to speak with Cohen himself. Previously, the guerrilla jokester mainly did press in-character, keeping with the aesthetic of Borat’s radical views, or Brüno’s alternative lifestyle. Nobby would have been a blast to interact with, but that doesn...

Sacha Baron Cohen's Freddie Mercury biopic had it all: a Peter Morgan written screenplay, David Fincher and Tom Hooper's interests as possible directors, and Cohen himself possessing a pretty spot-on likeness for the man himself. Unfortunately, the film was never meant to be, and the star of The Brothers Grimsby has finally revealed why, as apparently Mercury's former bandmates were a little too protective of their legacy. While doing an interview on The Howard Stern Show as part of his press tour for The Brothers Grimsby, Sacha Baron Cohen shared that one of the surviving members of the band dropped quite a bomb on him early on in the process. He described the unnamed band member / producer's approach to the film as follows: I go, all right, so it.s a bit like Pulp Fiction, where the end is the middle and the middle is the end. . I go,...

Am I shocked that Sacha Baron Cohen has once again pushed the boundaries of tasteful perversion to new, demonstrably scarring realms? Of course not. But, when you watch a film like Borat or Brüno, offensive content can be assumed. The Brothers Grimsby, on the other hand, is – or was supposed to be – a more narrative espionage thriller laced with Cohen’s innocence-eviscerating sense of humor. And it is, mostly. Cohen’s focus glistens with a 90s buddy-spy vibe, yet as adventure gives way to juvenility, we start to wonder whether dick jokes are merely supplemental, or if these inappropriate gags just needed a home, and Grimsby seemed like a fit enough place.
Cohen stars as Carl “Nobby” Butcher, a drunken soccer hooligan who finally reunites with his brother, Sebastian (Mark Strong), after being separated at a Grimsby orphanage. Nobby, the older of the two, stayed behind so Sebastian could be adopted by a loving family.

“The Brothers Grimsby” is funny. Get over it. I say this because I was certain it’d be yet another middling spoof of Bond films along the lines of Rowan Atkinson’s “Johnny English” movies, or worse, the ill-conceived and poorly executed Melissa McCarthy espionage comedy “Spy.” “The Brothers Grimsby” isn’t any of those; as noted, it’s funny. Directed by Louis Leterrier, (“Now You See Me”) and written by co-star Sacha Baron Cohen, with Peter Baynham (“Alan Partridge”) and Phil Johnston (“Zootopia”), the film spends all of about 40 seconds setting up the premise, which proves to be 20 seconds more than.

Sacha Baron Cohen is the perfect Howard Stern Show guest: fearless, off the cuff and almost totally unfiltered. During today's appearance on the show, the Brothers Grismby star didn't disappoint, talking at length about his controversial Oscars stunt, that newsmaking Donald Trump HIV joke in Grimsby, why his Freddie Mercury biopic fell through and what got him uninvited from every party after his stint hosting the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards. See below for all the highlights. His planned Freddie Mercury biopic (in which he was slated to star as the late rock frontman) fell apart after he failed to come to creative terms with Queen's remaining band members. "My first meeting, I should've never carried on, because a member of the band -- I won't say who...he said, you know, this is such a great movie, because such an amazing thing happens in the middle of the movie," Cohen related.

With Sacha Baron Cohen, audiences know what to expect, and they get that and more in the often hilarious if not Borat-level The Brothers Grimsby, which loses the reality gags of the British comic star’s earlier films and follows a more convention plot line — if that is possible. If Donald Trump didn't exist, Sacha Baron Cohen would have had to invent him. Not since the halcyon days of Borat and Brüno has anyone so effectively goaded Americans into revealing the anger and ignorance that burbles just beneath the surface.
