You thought you were okay sitting on the toilet until you read Dreamcatcher. You’d happily walk past a storm drain until you read It. You’d go into a creepy boutique shop before checking Needful Things out of the library. You didn’t even mind checking into Room 217 at a hotel until you read The Shining. More than perhaps any other horror novelist, Stephen King has unnerved our collective imagination with twisted creations that stalk our everyday lives. Demonic cars, rabid dogs, alien domes, possessed caretakers, crazed fans… there’s a Stephen King monster for every day of the year, plus one extra on leap years.
With a back catalogue reaching all the way from the 1970s to now, if you stacked every novel Stephen King had ever published in a teetering pile, it would almost certainly topple over and crush you to death.

In Stephen King's magnificent book "On Writing," the best-selling horror novelist makes a surprising confession: "There's one novel, 'Cujo,' that I barely remember writing at all. I don't say that with pride or shame, only with a vague sense of sorrow and loss." Yes, that's right — Stephen King barely remembers writing one of his most famous books. The reason: substance abuse. King has been open about his alcoholism over the years (he also had a pretty bad cocaine habit at one point), and it was his frequent drinking that caused him to forget about penning "Cujo." King also states that he's sad that he can't quite remember the book, as he thinks parts of it are quite good.
Published in 1981, King's "Cujo" follows several different connected characters but focuses primarily on a giant Saint Bernard. The poor pup ends up being bitten by a bat and comes...

The Alien Report: "The Alien Report follows "The Abductee" (Braxton Hale), an everyday American who finds himself hijacked by extraterrestrial beings and taken on a terrifying journey of self-preservation, running afoul of classic "grey aliens", disturbing human-et hybrids, and the U.S. government's shady Men in Black. Based on countless documented reports made by self-proclaimed abductees, The Alien Report is a meticulous, straight-faced look at what an real-life alien abduction would be like, from the perspective of first-person cameras.
The Alien Report has screened at festivals worldwide, winning awards in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Brazil. Shot on iPhone and GoPro cameras as a non-traditional narrative composed of re-assembled found footage, the picture plays out as both a sci-fi thriller and first-person documentary. It is the intended first chapter in a trilogy of films about extraterrestrial abductions.
The Alien Report was directed by Patrick Donnelly and produced by Kevin Schroeder and Michael Sell.

The Bloody Disgusting Selects zombie period piece Exit Humanity has taken a bite out of Screambox.
Hailed as “not a movie, but a piece of cinema” by Fangoria, it features genre legends Dee Wallace (Cujo), Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), and Stephen McHattie.
The film portrays a young man’s struggle to survive in the aftermath of an undead outbreak during the American Civil War. Heavily inspired by classic films such as Jeremiah Johnson and The Outlaw Josey Wales, Exit Humanity is a poetic tale told through the journal entries of its protagonist Edward Young.
The Canadian feature blends live-action and animation to explore deeper themes of fear, hope, redemption, and evil.
Starring horror icons Bill Moseley, Dee Wallace, Stephen McHattie, and new horror hero Mark Gibson, Exit Humanity is a zombie saga that tells the tale of the ultimate battle of good vs. evil. Brian Cox provides narration.

One of the scariest movie characters of all time is no doubt Zelda from Pet Sematary, the deathly ill sister of Rachel Creed who was actually played by male actor Andrew Hubatsek in the ’89 big screen adaptation. Zelda, who suffers from spinal meningitis, makes a brief but unforgettable appearance in the film, and she continues inducing nightmares to this day.
Our friend Gabe Lapeer over at Homemade Horror has captured that original version of Zelda in a brand new hand-sculpted figure, and he’s launching pre-sales in one week.
Pre-sales will run from March 13-15 on the Zelda figure, which recreates the most terrifying moment from Mary Lambert’s movie. Gabe even included Church in the sculpture.

For a guy who writes about awful stuff happening to people, Stephen King sure likes liking things. Just think about how many times he’s used his position to praise other creatives and projects. “I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker,” declared his blurb for the American release of Books of Blood. “Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel,” he said of The Fall on Twitter in 2022. “Wish I’d written it.” Heck, his horror history book Danse Macabre ends with an appendix recommending over 100 books and nearly 100 movies.
But when the 76-year-old writer praises the upcoming film adaptation of his seminal novel Salem’s Lot , King’s word carries a bit more weight. King published Salem’s Lot, about a man who learns that his old hometown has become infested with vampires, in 1975 and is still regarded decades later as...

Ready to take a “Night Swim?”
“Night Swim” is the story of a young couple (played by Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon), who move, with their family, into a new house. One of the biggest draws of this new house? The oversized swimming pool in the back yard. (Russell’s character has a degenerative disease; he thinks the pool will help.) Of course, soon after moving in they start to notice that the pool is exhibiting some alarming tendencies. Yes, this pool is haunted.
It’s the perfect movie for people who get unnecessarily freaked out when they wade into the deep end, who wonder what is lurking in the shadowy corner of the pool or who have ever read the Chuck Palahniuk short story “Guts” (don’t look it up – it made people puke). And it’s the perfect subject for a horror movie, uncannily turning an everyday space...

Genre icons Dee Wallace – whose credits include The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, Cujo, and Critters – and Felissa Rose – who will always be remembered for playing Angela in Sleepaway Camp – have signed on to star in the horror film The Boy from Below alongside Richie Ramone, who was the drummer for The Ramones from 1983 to 1987. Directed by Tory Jones, The Boy from Below is described as being a “retelling” of Jones’ 2017 film The Wicked One (which previously received a sequel titled Wicked Ones).
Jones had this to say about the project: “In 2014, I set out to create a new slasher character reminiscent of the horror heavyweights of films past. This would lead to the creation of The Wicked One, a corrupted teen who transforms into a hulking psychopath in a scarecrow mask. You Like It Darker: Stephen King’s next short story collection includes the Cujo sequel Rattlesnakes
A year and a half ago, legendary literary master of horror Stephen King mentioned that he was writing a novella called Rattlesnakes, which he referred to as a sequel to his 1981 novel Cujo (buy it Here), which was turned into a movie (watch the movie Here) that King thought should have earned star Dee Wallace an Academy Award. Although the events of Cujo are referenced in other King stories, it has never gotten a direct follow-up – which makes sense, since it’s about a rabid St. Bernard dog that doesn’t survive past the final pages. But now Entertainment Weekly has revealed exactly how Rattlesnakes is connected to Cujo: the lead character happens to be Vic Trenton, whose wife Donna and son Tad were the characters trapped in a car by the rabid St. Bernard. They have also revealed that Rattlesnakes is going to be one of the twelve...

Sometimes, dead is better. That’s the lesson in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, an origin tale about the ominous graveyard in Stephen King’s novel, which resurrects anything buried in it. Set in 1969, the film stars Jackson White as young Jud Crandall (played in the 1989 flick by Fred Gwynne), who discovers his family’s role in an age-old curse. Bloodlines is full of frights, famous faces and King staples such as… (Credit: Philippe Bosse/Paramount Players) It’s set in Maine. King’s home state has inspired many of the towns in his works, be it Ludlow in this film, It’s Derry or Needful Things’ Castle Rock. There are creepy critters. The Green Mile has a resurrected mouse, Mr. Jingles. Cat’s Eye followed a feline that saved a girl and, of course, there’s Cujo, the rabid Saint Bernard that could give Pet’s undead mutt a bloody run for...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in August, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature folk horror, killer animals, and more.
Dark August (1976)
Directed by Martin Goldman.
With August 22 being World Folklore Day, horror fans don’t ever have to look too far to find mysticism and superstitions. Right in their backyards are plenty of homegrown horrors that showcase the extraordinary. Martin Goldman’s Vermont-shot regional horror Dark August centers on the man who accidentally runs over and kills a little girl. While J.J. Barry‘s difficult character is found innocent in court, he still suspects the victim’s grandfather has cursed him. Now the protagonist...

By 1983, Stephen King had rocketed to the top of the publishing world within a fairly short period of time. His first novel, Carrie, had been published only nine years before but he was already considered the modern master of the horror novel. The adaptations of his work, Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976), Tobe Hooper’s TV movie Salem’s Lot (1979), and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) had only served to feed the fires of his popularity. King had become a cottage industry by the third year of the new decade and the three films based on his work released that year remain among the best connected to his name while exploring some of the greatest issues he grappled with in the early years of his career.

In a career so far spanning 50 years, Stephen King has published 65 novels (with a 66th imminent) and more than 200 short stories. His books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, and have been regularly snapped up for film and TV adaptation. As a brand name, King is almost as prolific on screen as in print, with at least 60 movies (not even including the eight sequels to Children Of The Corn) and 50 shows to date, with more always incoming.
Cinematically, however, while some of the author’s adaptations are clear-eyed classics, the King association has not always been a guarantee of quality. In the early days, the gold rush to mine his back catalogue yielded more turkeys than treasure. So, with Rob Savage out this week (based on a 1973 short story in King’s _Night Shift collection), Empire have put together a list of the 15 greatest big-screen versions of the legendary scribe’s stories.

Stephen King has been having a resurgence in the last decade regarding his stories being adapted for the big screen. As The Boogeyman hits big screens, it is the perfect time to go back and look at what kind of monsters he has brought to cinema by way of his novels. One of King’s specialties is finding small, everyday things that can turn on us and invoke a deep seeded fear that chills us to the bone. Out of all of the films that have been made of his works, who are Stephen King’s scariest movie villains?
John Rainbird – Firestarter (1984)

The creature feature just isn’t explored enough anymore. Jaws was a monster of a success story and ended up having three sequels on its own and had a slew of imitators. 1980 would give us, in my humble opinion, one of the better ones with Alligator starring Robert Forster. It was successful too, making 6 and a half million on a 1.5-million-dollar budget. I know that’s not crazy money, but it was a hit and had a fun pedigree with it that remains very popular today. Its one of the movies that keeps selling well with new and old fans and so it recently got put on 4K. There weren’t as many creature flicks through the rest of the...

George A. Romero is one of my favorite filmmakers, so of course his 1982 Stephen King collaboration Creepshow (watch it Here) is one of my favorite films… and I’m glad to hear that Scream Factory is set to give the classic anthology movie a 4K Uhd release on June 27th. Copies are available for pre-order on the Scream Factory website, and there are multiple options to choose from. You can buy the 4K Uhd copy of the movie on its own, in a bundle with exclusive posters, an exclusive slipcover, and a prism sticker, in another bundle that adds an enamel pin set into the mix, or in another bundle that adds on some lobby cards. There are limited numbers of these bundles available, so head over to Scream Factory Asap to get yours.
Directed by Romero from a screenplay by King, Creepshow has the following synopsis: Writer Stephen King and director George Romero.

The series adaptation of Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction is on the way from Paramount+, and the official trailer has arrived ahead of the series premiere on April 30, 2023.
Lizzy Caplan (“Castle Rock”) is starring as female lead Alex Forrest in the upcoming Paramount+ reboot series, with Joshua Jackson (“Dr. Death”) playing Dan Gallagher.
“In the film, Alex is the villain of the story, and Dan is the hero and there is no gray area,” Caplan told Entertainment Weekly in a recent preview piece. “Now, audiences have changed so much, we are no longer primed to believe in this villainous woman story. She’s clearly mentally ill and that’s not something that is really touched upon at all in the movie.”
Amanda Peet (“The Chair”) and Dee Wallace (Cujo, The Lords of Salem) will also star.

She last graced the screens in 2002's "Manna from Heaven" as Detective Dubrinski. Now, a little over 20 years later, renowned scream queen Shelley Duvall has re-entered the chat in Scott Goldberg's "The Forest Hills," set to release this month. This feature film is a take on Goldberg's 2007 short film of the same name, but that appears to be the only similarity as of right now. The 2007 short, alternately titled "Danielle's Revenge," takes place in Kentucky and is centered around two horror website admins in search of an urban legend.
The highly-anticipated 2023 version is set in the serenity of New York's Catskill region, where our protagonist Rico (Chiko Mendez) is recovering from a head injury, with Shelley Duvall playing the role of his mother. Duvall and Mendez are joined by Edward Furlong ("Terminator 2"), Dee Wallace, and Stacey Nelkin ("Halloween III: Season of the Witch"). It looks like it's going to be a trippy,...

Movies aren’t the only place where horror continues to thrive as we begin 2023; all signs point to a banner year for the genre on the small screen in addition to the big screen.
On the smaller screen, 2023 brings the return of acclaimed favorites “Yellowjackets,” “The Witcher,” and “Evil,” plus “The Walking Dead” spinoffs, the final season of “Servant,” and more. And here’s hoping “Chucky” gets that season three renewal announcement soon.
But for all the returning series, we’re excited about the brand-new series on the horizon.
Here are thirteen new genre shows to look forward to in 2023.

When the "It" film series was preparing for its second installment, few were more jazzed than star James McAvoy, who would get to meet celebrated author Stephen King. "It: Chapter 2" is the latter of a two-part adaptation of King's behemoth 1986 novel, "It," released a couple of years after the first "It" in 2017.
McAvoy stars as the adult iteration of William "Bill" Denbrough, whom audiences met in "Chapter One" as the adolescent, resolute leader of the ragtag Losers Club. Along with fellow kids Beverly Marsh, Richie Tozier, Mike Hanlon, Ben Hanscom, Eddie Kaspbrak, and Stanley Uris, young Bill battles the supernatural entity of the title who takes the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, a clown responsible for several cycles of child deaths in Derry, Maine. When Pennywise resurfaces 27 years after the Losers defeated him in 1989, Mike gathers the old band back together for a final showdown with evil.

“It’s the law of the jungle,” one character says fairly early on in Beast — “early” as in after we’ve established that a lion decides to become a four-legged vigilante once some poachers slaughter his pride, but before this one-cat army sets his sights on our hero and his family. The way the man inhales and pauses before he delivers the next line suggests he’s about to drop some serious science: “The only law that matters here.” Ah. Ok!
To be fair, there are other laws that also apply to this survivalist thriller.

There is an almost elegant, simplistic beauty in the existence of the new film "Beast," which is about as close to peak late-summer-movie as you're going to find in the year 2022. Here is something that gives you exactly what you would expect when you hear that it is a movie in which Idris Elba fights a lion with his bare hands. If that premise sounds inherently ridiculous, that's because it is inherently ridiculous. No matter the context for why Elba fights a lion or what the outcome is, you can only take a movie so seriously when its climactic moments feature such a cartoonish battle. "Beast," to its credit, does not have grander aims in mind, with its mild ambitions as straightforward as possible. "Beast" is not a great film, but it is exactly as silly as the logline implies, or as much as you might hope.

We tend to associate David Cronenberg more with horrible mutations and corruptions of the flesh rather than the supernatural, yet one of his most gripping and compulsively watchable films came in 1983 with "The Dead Zone." It was the third and best of the Stephen King adaptations that year, released between the rabid dog thriller "Cujo" and John Carpenter's menacing killer car movie, "Christine."
"The Dead Zone" was also Cronenberg's second film of the year, his first working from another writer's screenplay, and something of a palate cleanser after the gnarly excesses of "Videodrome." He wrote (via Den of Geek):

Stars: Tony Todd, Billy Zane, Bruce Dern, Adrienne Barbeau, Ed Morrone, Crash Buist, Danielle Gross, Meg Foster, Courtney Gains, John Kassir, Mike Ferguson | Written and Directed by Justin Lee

Writer/director Justin Lee isn’t exactly somebody I expect a good film from, but even he can’t go wrong with a cast that includes Tony Todd, Billy Zane, Bruce Dern, Adrienne Barbeau and a few other genre vets, can he?
Wheelchair-bound Nam vet Bill Unger (Dern) is out visiting his wife’s grave when he hears something in the woods. “Dancing with the Stars” will miss Halloween by just one day (wait ’til next year though), so it has to spook it up six days early on Monday’s Horror Night.
The remaining 10 couples will perform routines inspired by scary movies… and also “The Vampire Diaries”? One of these is not like the others. Meanwhile, Melora Hardin and Artem Chigvintsev‘s “Cujo”-inspired jive will be to “Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog.” Incredible pairing. If no one’s dressed up as a dog, we riot.
See the full list of dances below.
