The world of documentary filmmaking is as diverse as that of its fiction sibling, although what’s regularly shown on television or in larger theater chains may lead you to believe otherwise. While fiction is seemingly freer to imagine different stories and forms, the culturally dominant approach to nonfiction cinema hardly suggests its possible dynamism. Since documentaries are often hamstrung by notions ironically imported from mainstream fiction filmmaking—character arcs, straight-forward storytelling, satisfying conclusions—the kind of nonfiction movies that achieve broader cultural interest tend to be neatly packaged delivery vehicles for information one could easily glean much more quickly from an article. This approach while most visible is hardly the norm, and the world is far too messy and filmmakers far too adroit at being inspired by this terrific confusion to be limited to the commercial standards of truth-telling. After all, while the truth is a necessary component of living,...

In its 19th edition, Film Comment Selects provides a showcase for various films from around the world, their contribution to cinema deemed important and vital by Film Comment Magazine's esteemed editors. This year's lineup includes Steven Soderbergh's High Flying Bird, once again shot on an iPhone; László Nemes' Sunset, his followup to Son of Saul; Flight of a Bullet, a one-take docu into the heart of the Russia-Ukraine conflict; Up the Mountain, Zhang Yang's formally daring portrait of Bai people in Western China; and The Hidden City, a sensory tour of Madrid's underground. Most of these films in the selection are not what you call masterpieces, but each brings a spark and its unique colors to cinema. This is the reason why I love the series. It...

“Poetry is that which is worth translating. . . . Great poetry lives in a state of perpetual transformation, perpetual translation: the poem dies when it has no place to go.”—Eliot Weinberger, 19 Ways of Looking at Wang WeiBeginning February 8th and continuing through most of the month, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is presenting a series of eleven films by Chinese director Jia Zhangke, alongside seventeen films from directors he is said to admire or who have influenced him. It’s an unusual program: more than a simple historical retrospective, it provides the audience different, sometimes contradictory, contexts through which to view the filmmaker’s work. Though it is far from comprehensive (how could it be?), the series offers a unique opportunity to measure Jia’s work against masters from the past and present, from European, Asian, and American traditions. This is entirely appropriate for a filmmaker whose work remains...

Two years after China’s Hehe Pictures rescued it from receivership, former Asian industry powerhouse Fortissimo Films is making a full return to the international film sales business. The revived and revamped company will debut next week at Berlin’s European Film Market, and will also launch an international film marketing services subsidiary.
In its former incarnation, Fortissimo played a major role in growing Asia’s art-house film business and launched the careers of dozens of Asian auteurs. Although it operated out of Hong Kong, the company was legally registered in the Netherlands and filed for bankruptcy there in August 2016. Hehe Pictures backed the acquisition of the company from Dutch bankruptcy administrators in February 2017.
The new Fortissimo will keep its Amsterdam office, but decisions will now be made from Beijing by a team headed by former Im Global executive Clement Magar, Fortissimo’s general manager. Gabrielle Rozing, who was instrumental...

Korean drama movie, “Clean Up” took the best film prize on Friday night at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival and Awards Macao.
The jury, which comprised Chen Kaige, Danis Tanovic, Mabel Cheung, Paul Currie, and Tillotama Shome, said: “’Clean Up’ is a powerful, visceral film which is symbolic and naturalistic at the same time… The director unfolds a psychological drama with simmering intensity, and humanists the criminal without condoning the heinous crime in any way.”
The festival, completing its third edition, wrapped up with another breezy and efficient closing ceremony, kept largely on schedule thanks to its local live broadcast.
Celebrities on the red carpet included Phillip Noyce, Aaron Kwok and Ben Wheatley. Industry executives in attendance included Ellen Eliasoph, Michael J. Werner and Shekhar Kapur.
The closing ceremony was also the occasion for Variety and the festival to present awards to Asia’s next wave of talent.
