BBC Studios has acquired Werner Film Productions, the company behind Australian drama hit The Newsreader.
BBC Studios Productions Australia paid an undisclosed amount for Warner, marking the latest in several high-profile deals for the BBC’s commercial division. Last month, it paid £255M ($325M) for ITV’s share in their streamer, BritBox International.
The Werner deal is billed as “a significant investment” in Australia’s production ecosystem, and comes soon after BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell confirmed the BBC company was raising its debt facility to £600M as it seeks to invest in new business and double its size by 2027/28.
Werner is best known making ABC drama series The Newsreader, which stars Anna Torv and Sam Reid as an embattled anchorwoman and an ambitious reporter who confront studio politics and their own issues during the 1980s, in association with eOne. The series has won multiple Logies and Aacta awards and season three is currently filming.

John Lennon was frequently critical of Paul McCartney. When The Beatles broke up, he publicly discussed his problems with his bandmate, calling him controlling, frustrating, and egomaniacal. Still, Lennon could give his former bandmate credit where credit was due. He said McCartney was one of the best bassists in the music industry and did not have an over-inflated ego about his talent.
John Lennon said Paul McCartney wasn’t an egomaniac about one of his skills
While McCartney had the most technical training of The Beatles, he was primarily a self-taught musician. Lennon did not think this impacted his skill in any way. He thought that McCartney was one of the best bass players alive.
“I think Ringo’s drumming is underrated the same way as Paul’s bass-playing is underrated,” Lennon said in The Beatles Anthology. “Paul was one of the most innovative bass players that ever played, and...

When John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr took the stage during Beatles concerts, they could hardly hear themselves play. Their audience began screaming before they saw the band and rarely stopped until after the band had departed. Members of the band found this frustrating, but Lennon defended their fans. While he seems like the most unlikely defender, his wife said he felt a great deal of gratitude for Beatles fans.
John Lennon defended noisy Beatles fans
Footage of The Beatles running to take the stage during their concerts almost always includes shots of people covering their ears. The sound of screaming was so loud that the music could hardly reach the audience. Even the band couldn’t hear what they were doing.
“Screaming had just become the thing to do,” Starr said in The Beatles Anthology. “We didn’t say, ‘Ok, don’t forget, at this concert — everybody scream!

When The Beatles told producer George Martin that they wanted to get back into the studio to record an album after Let It Be, he could hardly believe his ears. He assumed the band would break up. Recording Let It Be had been a miserable experience for all involved and he didn’t see a future for The Beatles.
George Martin said making The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ was a terrible experience
In early 1969, The Beatles gathered to begin working on Let It Be. Tensions among the band members were at an all-time high. Their recording sessions for the White Album had also been challenging, and Let It Be was no different.
“This was a very difficult period,” Paul McCartney said in the book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now by Barry Miles. “John was with Yoko full-time, and our relationship was beginning to crumble: John and I were going through a very tense period.

It’s an unusual scene outside Jaipur cinema houses as people can be seen queuing up on tractors and trucks to watch ‘Gadar 2’, starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel. Meanwhile, inside cinema halls, as soon as song ‘Main nikla o gaddi le ke’…. is played, people run towards screen and start shaking their legs. This is the scene in almost all cinema halls where people dance fiercely and clap on each and every scene and songs of ‘Gadar-2’ movie.
Sanjeev Sharma, General Manager Marketing, Inox said: “There is a good atmosphere in the theaters right now. The most important thing is that those who had stayed away from the theaters post covid, have come back happily once again. You go to any cinema hall, you will see people from all strata of society.
“Earlier these people had lost their fascination for cinema. The shows are housefull since last five days.

Kolkata/Guwahati, Aug 5 (Ians) The 2021-22 Indian Super League (Isl) champions Hyderabad Fc take on debutants Delhi Fc, who have been newly promoted to I-League Second Division, in the 132nd Durand Cup at Guwahati’s Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, on Sunday.
Double headers will continue in the 132nd Durand Cup on the first Sunday of the tournament as local giants East Bengal Fc open their campaign against the Bangladesh Army Football Team (Baft) in the second match of the day, at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Vybk).
The day will see two matches that would seemingly be comfortable outings for the fancied teams involved.
Even though Hyderabad Fc go into Sunday’s first match of the day after just four training sessions at home, with a new-look squad and a new first-team coach in Conor Nestor as well.
However, they still possess enough quality to put it across Delhi Fc.

Bokeh Game Studio took a bit of a break from working on Slitterhead to release a new developer diary video for the still-in-development horror title. This time around, the video takes a look at recent user tests for Slitterhead, which also includes new in-game footage.
The video kicks off with Bokeh’s Project Manager, Takuro Konno, talking about his role at the studio, which also includes conducting user tests. “Getting real opinions helps define whether the response is what development had in mind,” explains Konno.
Given what kind of game Slitterhead is hoping to become, the topic of stress during user tests is important. “We analyze whether stress is provoked intentionally to prepare a feeling of achievement afterwards,” says Konno. “The team is very receptive to these results and actively participates in the though process for the next steps.”
Interspersed with footage of the players are glimpses of Slitterhead in action.

The Night Manager, the famous spy thriller novel, has so far had two adaptations. The British show, adapted for the screen by David Farr and directed by Sussane Bier, took the audience through the world of arms deals, civil unrest, and the politics of the Middle East and North Africa and how British intelligence was indirectly involved in them. In the Hindi adaptation, created by Sandeep Modi and written by Shridhar Raghavan, the setting was altered to reflect the politics of the Indian sub-continent and how intelligence messes with the domestic matters of neighboring countries for the national interest.
What makes both shows similar and unique is the treatment of the spy thriller, where a regular hotel employee or ex-military officer turns into an intelligence agent for his country. The protagonist wants to bring down the man who is responsible for the murder of a woman he was trying to...

The Beatles caused a bit of controversy when they first rose to prominence, but their public image was much cleaner than many of the bands that came after them. They wore neat suits and charmed the press with their humor. Behind the scenes, though, they lived a more rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle than some might expect. According to Ringo Starr’s temporary replacement drummer Jimmy Nicol, The Beatles spent many of their nights in a haze of women and alcohol.
A temporary drummer said The Beatles’ behavior didn’t align with their public images
In order to appeal to a wide array of people, Beatles manager Brian Epstein wanted to make them seem friendly and approachable. The image fit them well, but certain details of their private lives might have surprised fans, according to Nicol. He joined the band on tour while Starr had tonsillitis.

According to a recent Acast survey1, more than a quarter of consumers (27%) would be more likely to sign up for a subscription if they also received podcast benefits as part of that subscription. More than a fifth of consumers (21%) would be willing to pay even more to get the added podcast benefits.
With the launch of Acast+ Access, companies with existing membership offerings — including news publishers, media organisations, streaming services, and more — can now integrate podcast benefits into the paywall they already use for their subscribers.
