The year 2023 was an embarrassment of riches when it came to animation. Movies like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” became massive commercial successes and crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office, while movies like “Nimona” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” hit big with audiences and critics. There were films that boasted wildly different aesthetics and showed the power of the animation medium, like “Blue Giant” and “The First Slam Dunk.” We also saw the return of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, who gave us his most personal film to date with “The Boy and the Heron.”
That’s a lot for 2024 to live up to — luckily, it seems the year will bring with it a healthy mix of big studio franchises and more grown-up animated fare. There are still big and highly anticipated animated movies slated to be released in 2024. Here is a rundown of 2024 animated releases with updates to come.

Plot: After a tragic loss, Tom Lee, a Chinese-American teen, learns he’s part of an order of guardians tasked with protecting an ancient phoenix. Clueless about his heritage, avatars of the Chinese zodiac assemble to show him the ropes and join the fight against the villainous Loo.
Review: Fantasy fiction is a slippery slope. After the meteoric rise of characters like Lyra Belacqua, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson, the literary market became flooded with young heroes, each with a magical lineage to discover or a world-ending mystery to solve. It takes a lot to stand out among the crowd and leave your mark on young minds worldwide. Thankfully, The Tiger’s Apprentice taps into an extraordinary world shaped by timeless heritage and iconography, with the Chinese zodiac as its foundation.

Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding and Sandra Oh are among the all-star voices in this likable but generic story of a San Francisco teen and a posse of animal shapeshifters
This perky, likable but profoundly derivative animated feature arrives just in time for both lunar new year and the February half-term school holidays. Like a shop-bought char siu bao, it’s over-sweetened but moreish: Chinese-flavoured comfort food in cinematic form. The story, based on a novel by Laurence Yep, revolves around teenage Tom (voiced by Brandon Soo Hoo) who lives in San Francisco with Amah (which means “grandmother”), voiced by Tan Kheng Hua; the latter is an eccentric old dear who insists on slathering their 19th-century house in so many good luck charms that people leave oranges on the doorstep thinking it’s one big shrine.

Previously, March 15: Paramount has moved the release of its Tiffany Haddish-Rose Byrne buddy comedy Limited Partners back by six months to January 10 and dated its literary-adaptation toon The Tiger’s Apprentice for 2020.
Limited Partners, which the studio acquired as a pitch in July, had been set to roll out on June 28 but no will open January 10. That frame is where Stx launched another buddy comedy this year: The Upside, which went on to gross $105 million. The Haddish-Byrne directed by Miguel Arteta romp will face off against an untitled Chris Lord-Phil Miller toon from Sony that weekend, moving away from Universal’s Yesterday and Warner Bros’ next Annabelle chiller.
