Denzel Washington is unarguably one of the best actors and personality as a whole that the entertainment industry could ever be gifted with. Not only is he one of the most respectable celebrities in all of Hollywood, he is also one of the most widely commended actors of all time. If anything, he doesn’t hesitate to speak his mind and act his heart out.

That being said, he also aimed to break one long-standing stereotype about him while working on his 2001 thriller-crime masterpiece with Ethan Hawke, Training Day. According to what Hawke shared during an interview, even when people tried to stop him, Washington stayed on his decision to prove that he could play a bad guy and still be a role model by “being great at my job.”

Actor Denzel Washington scored the role of a lifetime when he was cast as crooked officer Alonzo Harris in Training Day. The film required him and his co-star Ethan Hawke to be in real-life shady neighborhoods.
In one of these neighborhoods, the film’s cast and crew found themselves the victims of an actual crime.

In the 2001 feature, Washington and Hawke frequently drive around in what’s now seen as an iconic Monte Carlo. The car is almost another character in the movie itself, accompanying the pair in some of their most tense scenes. But there was someone on set who wanted the Monte Carlo for themselves, and so decided to take it when no one was looking.
Instead of getting upset, Hawke was actually impressed by the crafty thief.

Antoine Fuqua was just a child when he was shot on the streets of Pittsburgh. But the memory is spectacularly vivid. “I was 15,” says the 56-year-old director of the Oscar-winning Training Day. “I remember running through an alleyway and I remember it raining and I remember hearing a voice say ‘run’. I don’t know where it came from. But I remember every detail of those moments. Every detail.”
Hearing Fuqua describe what happened is like watching a sequence from one of his own neo-noir movies. “The bullets hitting the telephone poles. The splintering. The sound,” he says. “The rain on the guy that was shooting. The glasses he wore. The water hitting his glasses. The rifle in his hand.” Each freeze frame comes with a gesture: Fuqua’s hands splayed wide for the bullets, his knuckles gliding past his eyes for the rain, his finger pulling an imaginary trigger.

For any actor, playing a villain or just a plain bad person can be a true joy, because it lets them flex their imagination and acting muscles to play someone (hopefully) unlike themselves. That has also led many of those performances to winning Oscars. Even so, if you ask many actors (especially Christoph Waltz) about “playing a villain,” they’ll probably tell you that they couldn’t look at their character in that way, since they needed to create a believable motivation for their character to do all the awful things they do. And yet, so many actors have won Academy Awards for playing generally bad people, as you can see in the gallery above (or click here for direct access). Read on to see all of the Oscar-winning villains from the past 30 years.

King Kong ain’t got nothing on Lamorne Morris!

In the sketch, which played during Morris’ monologue, the actor played both himself as a rookie host, and Denzel Washington as his corrupt cop character Alonzo Harris from the film.
At one point, Alonzo tries to bully Morris into stealing a TV from the show’s green room. When an alarm goes off, he throws a bag of white powder on Morris, telling him, “Hold this.”
“Oh my god, is this crack? Did you put crack on my neck?” Morris asks.
“Crack? Hell no, those are Guillermo’s stones,” Alonso tells him.

Lamorne Morris was the latest guest host for “Jimmy Kimmel Live” while Kimmel is on his annual summer break, and on Monday’s episode, he imagines his preparation for the job as something out of “Training Day.”
The pre-taped sketch, which dropped late into the monologue, had the “New Girl” star playing both the rookie host and the insane, corrupt trainer ala Denzel Washington’s Oscar-winning Alonzo Harris from “Training Day.” And on the real, Morris does a pretty damned good impression.
Highlights from the sketch include a bit inspired by the “didn’t know you like to get wet, though” scene in “Training Day,” where fake Alonzo bullies Morris into attempting to steal the television from the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” green room.

There are very few pure action movies, a fact one only comes to appreciate once they try to compile a list like this. "The Expendables," "Commando," and the "Fast and the Furious" franchise are examples of such films in which the only objective is to blow things up in creative and satisfying ways. Instead, most action movies fall on a sliding scale and also incorporate thriller, horror, and comedic elements.

Whether you've seen "Training Day" or not, you've probably heard about the "King Kong speech." Said speech happens toward the end of the film, when Denzel Washington's Alonzo Harris unleashes a tirade against his former criminal accomplices after his partner Jake (Ethan Hawke) gathers evidence that proves he's a corrupt cop. Washington shouts the now-famous line "King Kong ain't got s*** on me!" then threatens his friends with prison time -- even threatening to burn down the whole block where the film takes place. It's the cherry on top of a spectacular performance for Washington; he even snagged an Academy award for the role.

Whether you liked the original 2001 film, Training Day, or not there is no denying that this feature helped cement Denzel Washington as one of the best actors of our generation. It was the first time that the actor stepped into the villain role and Denzel Washington knocked it out of the park. The general consensus about the Antoine Fuqua vehicle is that it’s one of the best cop dramas in the early 2000s. Now, spoiler alert, Alonzo Harris is ruthlessly gunned down by the Russians after he fails to pay back the fee. There were no teases of a

Ridley Scott’s 2007 feature, American Gangster, let Denzel Washington lead a regime change in uptown mob movies. That heralded position had always been held by Bumpy Johnson, who steered the underworld through the real-life Harlem Renaissance, holding his own against the Irish and Jewish mobs, and enjoying a long relationship with New York’s Italian criminal outfit. Partnered with Harlem’s crime queen Stephanie St. Clair and her gang the 40 Thieves, Johnson made his bones in the turf war with Dutch Schultz from the Bronx in the 1920s and ‘30s. Lucky Luciano gave the order to take out Schultz and declare Bumpy a family associate. Bumpy played chess with the head of the Five Families for years in front of the Ymca on 135th Street.
Laurence Fishburne played “Bumpy Rhodes,” based on Bumpy Johnson, in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1984 gangster film, The Cotton Club, and reprised the role as Johnson in the 1997 film Hoodlum.

In Training Day, Denzel Washington’s undercover detective Alonzo Harris is playing the long game, and edging both sides against the middle. “This shit’s chess, it ain’t checkers,” he explains to Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke), the rookie cop being led down the road to perdition. As another Denzel copper learned in the 1998 Satanic thriller Fallen, the devil often appears in the least likely of guises. For Training Day, Washington plays against type to lay out the temptations of easy money and real, street legal power. Alonzo may not have nabbed Jake’s soul with his opening gambit, but he walked away with an Oscar thanks to this scene.

Training Day is one of the archetypal crime dramas of its time. It features a classic standoff between a young, fresh-off-the-street rookie police officer named Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) and his veteran partner Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington). The older cop is ostensibly evaluating his young partner, but in actuality he’s breaking Jake hm down and trying to corrupt him–just as Alonzo himself, one of the great screen monsters of the past 20 years, is corrupt beyond all redemption. Here is a supposed officer of the law who acts more like a crime boss, ruling over his neighborhood with an iron fist.
The tension that burns at the center of the movie–will Jake be turned and will Alonzo get his comeuppance?–forms the bedrock of a classic dramatic scenario. The power inherent from being in law enforcement can be both a force for good and a weapon of evil.

Training Day’s “King Kong” monologue stands tall among the great speeches of cinema. Denzel Washington elevates the iambic pentameter of Iago, the villain of William Shakespeare’s Othello, to syncopated street rhythms. It is on par with Marlon Brando’s reflections on the horrors of war as Col. Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, it is the inverse of Gregory Peck’s monologues as Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, and it ranks with Joe Pesci’s “Do you think I’m funny?” scene in Goodfellas or Groucho Marx’s breakdown in the middle of reconciliation in Duck Soup. But the single line of dialogue which hits it home wasn’t in David Ayer’s screenplay. It was pure Denzel.
“King Kong ain’t got shit on me,” LAPD Det. Sgt. Alonzo Harris declares in the most memorable scene in Training Day. Washington improvised the line in the heat of the moment.
