“The monster has returned,” lieutenant colonel Nancy Jaax ominously writes to her former mentor Wade Carter in the premiere episode of National Geographic’s limited series “The Hot Zone.” When Jaax (Julianna Margulies) believes that Ebola Zaire has surfaced in an ill monkey in Reston, Virginia, she reaches out to the ostracized Carter (Liam Cunningham) for advice, though she suspects he may not answer her clarion call. Both Jaax and Carter lie at the heart of “The Hot Zone,” and Margulies and Cunningham both deliver strong performances that anchor the miniseries with their emotional intensity.
Though much of “The Hot Zone” takes place in and around Washington, D.C. in 1989 and centers on Jaax’s mission to contain a potential outbreak of the Ebola virus, a significant portion of the program depicts Carter’s journey to Zaire in 1976 when he first encounters Ebola. In order for these storylines to work,...

There is an awful lot happening in Wednesday’s finale of National Geographic Channel’s “The Hot Zone.” Julianna Margulies’ Dr. Nancy Jaax thinks Jerry (Noah Emmerich) going down is the biggest problem her team is currently facing.
Might want to check the freezer. Yeah, you’re missing a marsupial — and on this miniseries, that’s a particularly huge problem.
“There could be a monkey out there spreading a mutating virus across the city,” Wade Carter (Liam Cunningham) informs his protege in a sneak preview clip, which is exclusive to TheWrap.

The Hot Zone‘s Lt. Col. Jerry Jaax seems like exactly the kind of person you’d want to lead you into a situation that could wind up with your contracting one of the planet’s deadliest diseases.
He’s forthright. He’s clear-eyed. He’s an Army veterinarian who’s not above reminding you that the ill animals you’re about to recover are “little guys” who are way more scared than you are.
Too bad he’s chosen a virus-obsessed researcher/realist as his wingman for this particular covert op. So in tonight’s two-hour miniseries finale (National Geographic Channel,...

There are many horrors in real life. Some are so ghastly that it might seem more like fiction than fact.
On The Hot Zone Season 1 Episode 1 and The Hot Zone Season 1 Episode 2, the alarming discovery that the deadly Ebola virus might have made it's way onto U.S. soil is the focus of National Geographic's, six-part limited series airing over three nights.
The series is inspired by the true events outlined in Richard Preston's 1994 best-selling novel of the same name.
If you haven't read the novel, no worries. This series will pull right into the actual terrifying race to prevent a global crisis of epic proportions.

And if you've seen the 1995 movie Outbreak (which was also based on Preston's book) starring Dustin Hoffman and Rene Russo, you can forget you ever saw it because this series blows it out of the water.

The Ebola virus is one bad bug. And in the late 1980s, when it first appeared on American soil, one United States Army researcher was at the forefront of keeping it from infecting the populace. That researcher was Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax, and The Hot Zone — the National Geographic Channel miniseries based on Richard Preston’s bestseller — is her story.
