This author recalls reading an issue of TV Guide in 1994 about the then-upcoming TV series "Star Trek: Voyager," set to debut in January of 1995. The TV Guide noted that Robert Picardo, a Joe Dante repertory player, would play a character named Doc Zimmerman, the holographic doctor on board the U.S.S. Voyager. This name was culled from pre-production notes on the series, and the showrunner fully intended for Zimmerman to be the character's name.
The premise of the show, however, dictated that the Doctor have no name. The Doctor was an Emergency Medical Hologram, only meant to be activated in times of extreme crisis when a chief medical officer is not available. Once the crisis was over, the hologram was meant to be shut off. Thanks to the stranded state of the U.S.S. Voyager, however — it was stranded across the galaxy, 70 years from home — the Doctor was never shut off.

When we reviewed Mythic Battles: Pantheon just a month or two ago, I had no idea that soon-to-follow would be a newer, more refined take on the divine conflict genre that I had immediately fallen in love with. Mythic Battles: Pantheon is brilliant, and for me, the Greek mythology setting is perhaps the absolute pinnacle – but Mythic Battles: Ragnarok is more refined, more balanced and arguably – even though I enjoy the Norse mythos less – even better. The fundamentals of gameplay are the same, but you can see where four or five years of feedback has been invested in Monolith’s immense follow-up.
Mythic Battles: Ragnarok shares the same setting as Mythic Battles: Pantheon, with the idea that some cataclysmic event has rendered the Gods down to Earth, making them mortal and forcing them to fight for divine stones in order to reclaim their power. Wes Anderson is driving through the Spanish countryside with his eight-year-old daughter, Freya; it’s her school holiday. At the end of our half-hour phone conversation, he reaches Barcelona. He has always loved making shorts, clocking a dozen since his career launched with 1993 Sundance entry “Bottle Rocket,” the short that inspired his eventual debut feature of the same name, when we first met. Now, he has an Oscar frontrunner, Venice premiere “The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar,” the first and longest (39 minutes) of four increasingly strange Roald Dahl shorts currently on Netflix. “Henry Sugar” is notably the highest-rated live-action short of 2023 on Letterboxd.
Netflix, which owns the screen rights to the Dahl library, provided the budget for “Henry Sugar,” and when Anderson delivered the first film economically, he had some money left over and asked for a budget to complete three more shorts. Is he done? “It’s completely up to them,...

The exec producer behind BBC comedy-drama We Might Regret This has said his ambition was for a show starring and written by a disabled performer to be “at the very top table of creativity.”
The Office and People Just Do Nothing producer Ash Atalla, whose Roughcut TV outfit is making We Might Regret This in association with Village Roadshow Television, said there has been a tendency for British broadcasters to “use the dry slopes of smaller budget shows or ancillary channels as training progams” when it comes to projects led by disabled people.
Penned by Kyla Harris and Lee Getty, We Might Regret This, on the other hand, is being positioned as a bigger-budget primetime offering for the UK’s national broadcaster, which its backers feel could be a potential awards winner.

This post contains spoilers for "The Witcher" book series.
Ciri is nowhere to be found. At least, that what the princess' parent figures Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) thought when fans of "The Witcher" last saw them recovering from the battle of Tor Lara. Season 3 of the popular Netflix series ends with the pair poised to head in different directions on a mission to save Ciri. Sorceress Yen takes on the task of rebuilding Aretuza after her mentor's death, while Geralt (soon to be recast with Liam Hemsworth taking over for Cavill) plans to track down The White Flame (Bart Edwards), Aka Ciri's long lost father.
That's all well and good, but it turns out Ciri (Freya Allan) actually ended up somewhere unexpected. After portalling to the desert and lizard-bashing her way out of there with the help of some creepy ghosts (or hallucinations), she ended up kidnapped by bounty hunters.

Some of the best scenes in "The Witcher" season 3 fast-track the show's central relationships. After two seasons spent splitting up and reuniting, Princess Ciri (Freya Allan), Geralt of Rivera (Henry Cavill), and the powerful sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) were finally in one place -- and surprisingly happy. There was still some bad blood about that whole 'Yen almost sacrificed Ciri to a Baba Yaga-esque demon' thing, sure, but "The Witcher" pretty swiftly moved past it. The season premiere features a surprisingly endearing montage of the group evading detection together, all while Yen trains Ciri to be the hero she's meant to become.
These scenes worked well thanks to the cohesion of the core cast, who all have a familial chemistry that makes even a sped-up bonding experience look sweet and believable. According to Chalotra, though, it took some coordination between the actors to get the bond between Ciri...

Rhona Rees is ready to shock with “Freya,” set in the near future where abortion is completely illegal and contraception is only available to men.
“That’s what I like about sci-fi. If we show an extreme future that’s still preventable, it will allow us to start a conversation,” she says.
“I get really emotional when I talk about it. It’s unbelievable, the way we are sliding backwards in human rights, because women’s rights are human rights. If this was happening to men, there would be World War III.”
Now in development, “Freya” was recently awarded at Frontières, winning PurpleDOG Post’s post-production prize worth Cad$ 10,000. Kristyn Stilling and Athena Russell produce for Freya Films.
Rees has already explored a similar universe in a 2020 short directed by Camille Hollett-French, which she wrote and starred in as Jade, pregnant after a one-night stand. Suddenly, the government-mandated AI assistant,...

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if Jim Carrey‘s filmography was revered like Shakespeare’s catalog? This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "The Witcher" and the source material.
It's been a few weeks since Volume I of "The Witcher" season 3 aired on Netflix, ending with a cliffhanger that anticipates the massacre after the Thanedd Ball. While the first two seasons have been pretty eventful so far, season 3 gets to the meat of the overarching story pretty quickly, making it fairly clear that Geralt (Henry Cavill) is not the sole protagonist of the series. In Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" novel series, there are many players that assume key roles, but Geralt and Ciri emerge as equally important in a tale about power, betrayal, and political upheaval. While Geralt still plays a crucial part in guiding Ciri (Freya Allan) in the right direction, the series will soon set up Ciri as the main character, as the fate of the Continent hinges on her actions.

She revealed how she had remained silent all these years because Adrienne had threatened to take her child away. However, Joe Saad, under the influence of alcohol, made a disastrous choice by erupting in anger at the wedding of an ex-member of The Kindred. Amy knew that Adrienne would seek revenge, leaving her worried about the safety of her son, Billy. The seventh episode ended with Billy going missing, prompting Amy to take immediate action to find him. Now, in the final endgame of The Clearing, Amy’s journey becomes even more treacherous as a dark and horrifying twist unfolds in her life.

The previous episode of The Clearing revealed a series of mysteries surrounding Amy, also known as Freya, and her family history. We were introduced to Maxine, Freya’s daughter, who was abandoned by her mother when she was very young. Amy’s decision to escape the cult she was part of ended up aiding the police in their investigation of the cult. However, capturing Adrienne, the cult leader, proved to be difficult for investigator Joe Saad because she had managed to go into hiding. The police did find the children and arrested supervisor Henrik and his wife for their involvement in kidnapping those children. Tamsin, another member of the cult, managed to escape and avoid capture by the police, resulting in the dissolution of the cult. Despite the cult disbanding, Adrienne continued to secretly expand her influence with the help of one of her followers, Anton.

In the previous episode of The Clearing, viewers were introduced to a cult led by a charismatic woman named Adrienne. She had orchestrated the kidnapping of children and formed her own cult. Among the members was Amy, a teenager who had been taken by Adrienne and was involved in the kidnapping. However, in a different timeline, it was revealed that Amy had grown up under a new identity, Freya. As Freya, she became a protective mother to her son Billy. Despite her efforts to move on from her past, Freya’s fears of the cult resurfaced when she suspected a white van was involved in another kidnapping. Through a series of flashbacks, it became evident that the children within the cult had suffered severe physical abuse and were subjected to Adrienne’s cruel methods of drugging, referred to as “Clearing.” The third episode of The Clearing features additional intriguing revelations...

Previously in The Clearing, we were introduced to a teenage girl named Amy, who assisted in the abduction of a little girl named Sara and transported her to a secret location where a cult was active. The cult was founded by a middle-aged lady named Adrienne, who arrived there shortly with her secretary, Dr. Latham. In a different timeline, probably in the future, Amy had grown up to be a young mother named Freya, who was protecting her son Billy. Hearing of another abduction, Freya feared the cult’s involvement in it. A surprising twist revealed that Freya, aka Amy, was still taking care of the cult leader, Adrienne, who had significantly aged and become ill.

The past never stays in the past, does it? In Hulu‘s The Clearing (premiering May 24), Freya Heywood (Teresa Palmer) grew up in a cult, brainwashed, starved, and abused yet utterly devoted to the Kindred’s supposedly divine “mother,” Adrienne (Miranda Otto). “Freya’s endured a childhood most wouldn’t even be able to imagine,” Palmer says. But she made it out and is a parent herself to a son, Billy. Which is not to say she’s unscarred. “Her demons still follow her,” the actress adds. “She’s overprotective and paranoid at times.” Imagine her reaction when a local girl is kidnapped under circumstances that remind Freya of her time in the Kindred. Ben King/Hulu “The hold Adrienne has on her followers is still prevalent,” Palmer explains. “She is as manipulative, cunning, and secretive as she’s ever been.” Before long, Freya is forced to confront what Palmer...

Standing before technicolor stained glass, her golden curls gleaming, Adrienne Beaufort (Miranda Otto) resembles a saint. She preaches her gospel to a room full of acolytes, decrying materialism and urging the washing away of sin. Then she showcases what might one day be the crowning achievement of her spiritual movement: her family of nearly a dozen children. Most of them have had their hair dyed platinum blond and chopped into harsh bangs and bobs—crude reflections of Adrienne’s own exquisite styling. “They are as pure and untainted as it is possible to be,” Adrienne says to the crowd. “A generation raised away from the suffocating rules of society. Nurtured under the most perfect conditions.”

Plot: An emotional and psychological thriller that follows the nightmares of a cult and a woman who’s forced to face the demons from her past in order to stop the kidnapping and coercion of innocent children in the future. The series burrows under the skin and inside the mind, blurring the lines between past and present, reality and nightmare in a truly unnerving way.

Sorry Kate Winslet, but you can’t just do this to me. I sat down to watch the Oscar winner and queen of Reading star in I Am Ruth, and, two hours later… I’m a broken woman. In Channel 4’s feature-length drama, Winslet plays a mother wracked with worry as her daughter’s mental health disintegrates. What destroyed me wasn’t the way Ruth fulsomely swears out loud when she’s alone in the car, nor how she scuttles into the garden to smoke a secret ciggie when completely exasperated. No, it was the way her voice is always just a little bit too high, hanging on by a thread, cheeriness hiding desperation – she exists, instinctively, to gee up everyone else.
As is the way with Dominic Savage’s female-led I Am anthology series, the story has been devised alongside Winslet herself, and the action is all improvised.

Kate Winslet has revealed why she felt it was “really important” for I Am Ruth to be set in “a middle-class world”.
Winslet stars as concerned mother Ruth, in Channel 4’s newest instalment of director Dominic Savage’s I Am anthology series, whose daughter Freya slowly retreats into herself as the pressures of social media begin to weigh on her.
Freya’s played by Winslet’s real-life daughter Mia Threapleton, 22, whom she shares with ex-husband Jim Threapleton.
In a new interview with Sky News, published on 8 December, Winslet spoke about the feature-length drama and her reasoning for it being set in a middle-class world.

Kate Winslet had to fight every ounce of maternal instinct in her body on the set of her latest project, I Am Ruth. In the feature-length Channel 4 drama, Winslet and her real-life daughter, Mia Threapleton, star as a mother and her child caught in the cold, lonely grip of a mental health crisis. “There were moments when I would look at Mia and go, ‘Oh my god, she’s doing it. She’s really doing it.’ And I wanted to hug her and make it stop,” Winslet told press at the event’s launch last week, blinking back tears as she recalled her 22-year-old acting out a panic attack. “My instinct was to go, ‘I’ve got you,’ straight away, and I had to resist it at every turn.”

Kate Winslet gives daughter Mia Threapleton a hug in the first image released from their upcoming drama “I Am Ruth.”

God of War Ragnarok is many things, but one of the game’s best features is its nearly unrivaled cinematic presentation style. Of course, the sequel’s ambitious narrative and storytelling would be nothing without the perfect cast of voice actors to play every character.
Thankfully, Ragnarok features such a cast. While many of the game’s principal characters (and voice actors) are returning from 2018’s God of War, those familiar faces and voices are joined by some fully-realized new characters that help make this game the most epic God of War adventure yet.
Before we dive a bit deeper into all that, you should know that the full God of War: Ragnarok cast is massive. Not only would it be incredibly difficult to list every single voiced character in the game in anything close to a legible format, but we would be spoiling a significant portion of the game...
