Like Flowers in Sand has me wondering if Jang Dong-Yoon is a professional athlete, because those running skills are incredible. We’ve got to admit, it’s incredible how the Korean entertainment industry mixes small-town slice-of-life with crime thrillers. This one is an especially impressive show with its inspiring storytelling and sweet message. However, things are getting moody now that we’re approaching the show’s end. We’ve passed the mid-way mark, so it’s time to get into the gritty details of what went down in this town, not just in the recent past but 20 years ago. Last week, Hyeon-Uk noticed there was something strange about Mi-Ran, and this week we’re going to learn how she’s connected with Du-Sik and the rest of the ssireum team.

Netflix’s new K-drama, Like Flowers in Sand, is a series without waste — a deliberate, consoling dive into ssireum, a traditional form of South Korean wrestling, set in an unassuming Geosan town reflected perfectly in Jang Dong-yoon’s earnest and unrefined Kim Baek-doo. The series begins as Baek-doo’s ssireum career ostensibly ends. A former childhood prodigy, the 33-year-old has failed to win a senior championship. As a scion of a family of winners, in a town defined by ssireum, no one can explain his failure. After getting blackout drunk,...

It’s almost the end of the year, and Netflix doesn’t seem to be done with serving Korean content just yet. The Korean entertainment industry is all in this time of the year, and we’re getting a taste of everything they have to offer! From the reality dating show Single’s Inferno to the highly anticipated Gyeongseong Creature and Death Game, the holidays seem to be covered for us, but Like Flowers in Sand may turn out to be the underdog that takes us by surprise, just like its protagonist. Like Flowers in Sand stars Jang Dong-Yoon and Lee Joo-Myoung in leading roles and follows the story of a “Ssireum” athlete (a traditional wrestling sport) who gives up after losing too many championships. When his childhood friend returns, she reignites the sporty spark in him.

Project Wolf Hunting begins with a mass return of Korean criminals captured in the Philippines. As they’re being led through Seoul airport somebody with a grudge against one of them detonates a suicide bomb killing himself, his target, and everyone else in the vicinity. To avoid a repeat of this, the next group is to be transported on the Frontier Titan, a specially fitted out cargo ship and delivered to a pier in Busan harbour to which the public doesn’t have access. I guess simply flying them into a military base never crossed anyone’s mind.
The Frontier Titan leaves Manilla with forty-seven criminals, twenty guards, two medics, and the ship’s crew. At least that’s what they think they’re leaving with because...

Kim Hong-Sun’s movies are always intensely thrilling and, more often than not, they are also quite violent. The 2017 title “The Age of Blood” was Hong-Sun’s debut feature-length film. Operating as a nonstop action adventure and period piece, “The Age of Blood” told the story of a swordsman who quickly finds himself immersed in an attempted prison break, and must do everything in his capacity to keep the escaping convicts at bay. In “Project Wolf Hunting,” Hong-Sun returns to the escaped convict motif. This time around, though, things get a little bit… weirder. “Project Wolf Hunting” is a rampant action-horror mashup; although not for the faint of heart, the movie is wildly entertaining and contains enough twists and turns to keep audiences on their seats all-throughout.
