- Apgar graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1929, where she studied zoology with minors in physiology and chemistry. In 1933, she graduated fourth in her class from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a residency in surgery at P&S in 1937.
- Inventor of the Apgar score, a quick and reliable way to determine the health of a newborn baby, an examination that is usually referred to today as a baby's Apgar test. Before her test, invented in 1952, there was no objective way to determine the health of a newborn, and babies were given little medical attention immediately after birth. Problems often escaped notice until they became critical.
- She was nominated for the 2018 New Jersey Hall of Fame in the Public Service category.
- She was inducted into the 2019-2020 Class of New Jersey Hall of Fame in the Public Service category.
