Exclusive: Ari Aster’s new A24 film Eddington has rounded out its cast with four additions: William Belleau (Killers of the Flower Moon), Cameron Mann (Mare of Easttown), Matt Gomez Hidaka (Silo), and Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes).
The actors join a stacked ensemble led by Joaquin Phoenix, who reteams with Aster and A24 following their collaboration on surreal epic Beau Is Afraid, as previously reported. Additional cast includes Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
While the film’s plot is being guarded, it’s been discussed as a Western. Aster is directing from his own script and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Production on the film kicked off earlier this month.

Aquarius Releasing founder Terence “Terry” Levene, who released dozens of B-movies in grindhouse theaters in the 1970s and ’80s and beyond, died Jan. 13 in Englewood, NJ. He was 90.
After working at Commonwealth United, Levene started Aquarius Releasing, which released genre films ranging from kung fu to sci-fi and far beyond and serve as a sub-distributor for Roger Corman and others. Aquarius had offices above the Selwyn Theatre on 42nd St. in New York, and released films including “Silent Night, Deadly Night,” “Isaac Hayes: Black Moses of Soul” and Lucio Fulci’s “The Beyond” (retitled as “Seven Doors of Death.”)
Among the other films he distributed or booked were the New York release of the wildly successful sex film “Deep Throat,” the Northeastern release of “Halloween” and John Sayles’ “Alligator.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone embraces her monumental responsibility as an Oscar nominee, utilizing her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and hoping to pave the way for more actors like herself.
During a panel conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Virtuosos Awards, Gladstone — of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu heritage — addressed the harmful depictions and references to Indians in media, notably mentioning the Kansas City Chiefs the day before their Super Bowl win.
“Honestly, you could hold both teams accountable,” Gladstone tells Variety. “The 49ers are based on the California Gold Rush, which was an incredibly brutal time for California Indians. And then the Chiefs. There are many ways that you could interpret the name ‘chief.’ It’s not just the name that bothers me. It’s hearing that damn Tomahawk chop. Terry Levene, the schlock showman who as the head of Aquarius Releasing was behind such films as Bruce Lee Fights Back From the Grave and Doctor Butcher, Medical Deviate, has died. He was 90.
Levene died Jan. 13 surrounded by his family in Englewood, New Jersey, Severin Films executive Josh Johnson announced.
Operating out of an office above the Selwyn Theatre on West 42nd Street in New York, Levene creatively marketed low-budget American features including Isaac Hayes: Black Moses of Soul (1973) and Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984).
For grindhouses and drive-ins, the onetime amateur boxer rebranded Lucio Fulci’s supernatural horror film The Beyond (1981) as Seven Doors of Death (1985) and Umberto Lenzi’s Italian shocker Cannibal Ferox (1981) as Make Them Die Slowly (1983), promoting the gory latter as “The Most Violent Film Ever! When Martin Scorsese strikes up a relationship with his cinematographer, the collaboration tends to last for more than one film. Throughout his legendary career, Scorsese has worked repeatedly with such top names in the art of cinematography as Michael Chapman, Michael Ballhaus, Robert Richardson, and now Rodrigo Prieto. The acclaimed cinematographer, who was an Oscar nominee for “Brokeback Mountain,” has been at Scorsese’s side for the last four of the master filmmaker’s projects. During that run, Prieto has received three Oscar nominations for his artistry.
“It is crazy to imagine that I could even one day in my career say, ‘Yeah, it’s my third nomination with Martin Scorsese for an Oscar.’ What are you talking about?” Prieto, who was nominated this year for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It’s thrilling and I feel very privileged to be in this position.

Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on December 5, 2023 as part of our 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony package, which celebrated 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. This interview has been lightly updated to reflect Lily Gladstone’s recent Best Actress nomination.
Lily Gladstone thrives on the unexpected. For instance, she’ll happily answer the usual questions — like, oh, what was it like working with iconic Hollywood actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro on Martin Scorsese’s lauded “Killers of the Flower Moon”? — but she’ll really light up when you ask her something a little different. More like, what was it like working with so many fellow Native and Indigenous talents on that same film?
“It is incredible to have had [that experience] on ‘Reservation Dogs,’ it’s incredible to have had it on ‘Fancy Dance,’” she said during a November interview with IndieWire. “It was...

Given the strong slate of this year’s Oscar nominees, the pre-Academy Awards season has been devoid of the intrigues and mud-slinging of previous epochs. Oops! – could a new outbreak of Barbie-phobia break the harmony and bring naysayers out of the shadows?
I already hear a few negative murmurs: Not only is Barbie suddenly “a bad movie,” but Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon, as his director originally planned. And Oppenheimer was a brilliant movie but arguably could have focused on a different physicist.
While most of us are disposed to admire the Oscar Best Picture nominees, and may even vote accordingly, this is the moment when we always hear from grumpy film nerds. They led the wave of indignation in 1982 when Et was critiqued for lacking the cultural depth of Gandhi. Et made us smile, not yawn, it was later pointed out,...

Martin Scorsese thinks the length of 'Killers of the Flower Moon' "felt right" despite complaints about the runtime. The 81-year-old filmmaker's epic new movie is over three hours long and he admits that he is at a loss at how to respond to those who think that picture should be shorter.Scorsese told Variety: "I really don't know how to respond to it except for the fact that many people seem to go with it. Some people say, 'I want to see it again.'"Not every film is for every person. Not every novel is for every reader, not every painting, etc. I don't know if it's something that will be universally accepted. This one felt right (at this length), and I felt that while I was watching it. I felt inside of it."Lily Gladstone has been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role...

As the 96th annual Academy Award nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, Martin Scorsese was in New York, the city that shaped his gutsy and gritty style of filmmaking. His latest epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” picked up 10 Oscar nominations, although lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed. With his director nod, Scorsese has been recognized 10 times in the category, making him the most nominated living filmmaker, edging out Steven Spielberg. But as he achieved that feat, his thoughts returned to old friends from “the neighborhood,” those rough-and-tumble streets of Little Italy where he came of age.
“The ones I knew are mostly gone, along with the neighborhood itself,” Scorsese says. “But they’re always with me, wherever I go. Maybe they’re joking around with me and giving me a hard time, but they’re proud.”
At the same time, the film’s star, Lily Gladstone, was braving a frost in Pawhuska,...

Spoiler Alert: This story features details from recent episodes of The Traitors.
Superfans of The Traitors UK will have the option of heading to their local cinema to watch Friday’s anticipated season two finale.
So far, four independent cinemas in London and regional towns across the UK have launched bespoke screenings for the BBC gameshow. Those cinemas are London’s Catford Mews and Ealing Project cinemas, Birmingham’s Mockingbird Cinema and Reading Biscuit Factory. This could be the first time a show of this kind has been shown in cinemas.
Mockingbird Cinema has styled their screening as a “watch party,” with a 140-minute run time. “Join us for The Finale of The Traitors Season 2 on The Big Screen,” the cinema’s listing reads. Tickets for the screening cost just £1 ($1.28), and the cinema has said all proceeds will be given to charity. Tickets at the other three cinemas, however, are free.

Rodrigo Prieto had a lot of mixed emotions running through him on Oscar nomination day. As the cinematographer of “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the latter of which earned him his fourth nomination, he was thrilled to see so many of his colleagues get nominated, especially four of the actors whose performances he captured with his camera.
But like so many others, he was “startled” to see Greta Gerwig miss out on a Best Director nomination for “Barbie.”
“Greta made a groundbreaking piece of cinema, one that is going to be remembered for years and years to come,” Prieto told TheWrap. “Of course, art is always subjective and these awards races bring competitiveness, but all the other nominations that ‘Barbie’ earned were because of her vision. This was her film.”

Lily Gladstone was FaceTiming her parents when her best actress Oscar nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon was announced.
They were both up to watch the announcement, the actress, who portrays Mollie Burkhart in the Apple film, says.
“My mom had the camera flipped around, and she was filming the TV,” Gladstone recalls to The Hollywood Reporter. “And I told her, ‘No mom, I don’t want to learn from like watching it through your phone. I wanna learn on your and dad’s faces.’ Sure enough, I could barely hear my name through the phone, but their reaction told me that it was a nod.”
With her nomination, Gladstone became the first Native American acting nominee in Oscars history. While she may be the first, the actress is certain she won’t be the last and argues that the honor isn’t just for her — it belongs to several people.

Each January brings high hopes and bitter disappointments, surprises and snubs. This Tuesday morning was no different when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominations for the best films of 2023. There were some obvious frontrunners who were always going to get in, be it Oppenheimer or The Holdovers, and some that always seemed like at least a strong possibility.
Still, there were plenty on the bubble, so it’s a relief to see Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives get in. Be that as it may, as an audience member who couldn’t afford to go to the movie theater every weekend, it might be understandable if you feel daunted at seeing so many films just added to your watch list. Silence greets Ernest Burkhart when he enters a meeting with the business leaders of Osage County, Oklahoma. This late into Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) has proven to be easily pliable, to the point that his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert De Niro) can convince him to poison his beloved wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone). But he can be pushed only so far. If the leaders do not want Ernest to testify against his uncle, they must be subtle.
Thus the quiet when Ernest enters the room, which Scorsese and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto shoot like a baroque painting. The low mumble of their conversation fades as each withered white face turns from the shadows to face Ernest, who nods in a suggestion of understanding.
But the quiet breaks when W.S. Hamilton, the lawyer for Hale and Ernest,...

Killers of the Flower Moon sees director Martin Scorsese tell the story of a series of murders that plagued the Osage Nation in the 1920s. Based on the David Gran book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon is more than just one of the best movies of 2023. It’s a sweeping epic about the United States’ history of corruption that also manages to tell the story of a truly doomed “romance” while shining a light on events that had previously either been ignored or widely misrepresented.
Yet despite the movie’s good intentions and nearly three and a half hour runtime, it doesn’t quite capture everything you need to know about these sobering historic events. For that matter, Scorsese’s decision to modify its source material’s structure by focusing more on the relationship between Mollie and Ernest Burkart and revealing the identity of the conspirators...

Few filmmakers in the annals of cinema have earned the right to take a bow like Martin Scorsese. For nearly 60 years, the maverick storyteller has pushed the limits of his art form and found new ways to leave an indelible mark on the audiences who still show up. So for more than a handful of critics who clapped at my screening when the maestro materialized at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon, it must have seemed like a well-earned mic drop; a chance for Scorsese to take visible ownership of a passion project he’s been shepherding to the screen for the better part of a decade.

Yet my personal reaction to the moment was initial bafflement and a curious melancholy. Staring directly into the camera, the director of Raging Bull and Goodfellas, Taxi Driver and Gangs of New York,...

Patti Smith had some touching words to share about Killers of the Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone.
The beloved singer-songwriter made her first public appearance on Thursday night since her hospitalization last month and honored Gladstone at the National Board of Review Awards Gala, presenting her the award for Best Actress.
“Thank you everybody. There’s a lotta you here. It’s a lot easier playing Madison Square Garden. But I’m very excited to be here,” Smith first told the crowd, which included the likes of Bradley Cooper and Martin Scorsese,...

Lily Gladstone has responded to Devery Jacobs‘ criticisms of Killers of the Flower Moon.
Jacobs previously tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese drama brought forth deep emotions based on its “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people.
The film follows the real-life killings of the Osage after oil was found on their land in Oklahoma.
Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure.
“I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair. Her reaction is hers,” Gladstone said of Jacobs. “We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when Certain Women played at TIFF.

Lily Gladstone is defending her Reservation Dogs co-star Devery Jacobs’ right to her opinion about Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s take on the Osage murders.
The Golden Globe winner briefly addressed the Echo star’s comments about the film, in which Jacobs described the experience of watching it as “hellfire.” The film chronicles the “reign of terror,” a string of unsolved murders by white Americans as part of a plot to steal the wealth of the Osage tribe, which retained the mineral rights, including oil leases, on their reservation.
This was carried out in part by white men marrying women of the tribe and becoming guardians of their Osage partner’s estate. In the film, Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman who is targeted alongside her family by her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), for their oil headrights on their Oklahoma reservation.

Lily Gladstone is speaking out after her “Reservation Dogs” co-star Devery Jacobs’ criticisms of “Killers of the Flower Moon” went viral.
Jacobs tweeted that watching the Martin Scorsese true crime drama was “fucking hellfire” due to the “unrelenting and unnecessarily graphic” portrayals of the 1920s murders of Osage people. The film follows the real-life killings of indigenous Osage after oil was found under their land in Oklahoma. Gladstone won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage Nation woman whose family was murdered by her in-laws for oil inheritances. Gladstone is predicted to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Gladstone told Rolling Stone in a new interview that Jacobs’ “reaction is a response to a lot of trauma” that Native women endure, especially when reliving the ancestral murders.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone recently joined Rolling Stone for an interview in which she was asked to weigh in on the heated criticism of the film made by “Reservation Dogs” actor Devery Jacobs, who Gladstone said is a friend. Gladstone also appeared on “Reservation Dogs.” Jacobs is a fellow Indigenous actor best known for playing Elora on three seasons of the FX and Hulu comedy series. She called out “Flower Moon” last October for not portraying its Osage characters with “honor or dignity” and for further dehumanizing them by depicting their deaths.
“We’re friends. I crashed on her couch in Toronto when ‘Certain Women’ played at TIFF,” Gladstone said when asked about Jacobs’ criticisms, with Rolling Stone noting the actor’s “face drops” when the topic is brought up. “I don’t want to bring heat back on her for this because I think that’s unfair.

When Lily Gladstone was growing up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in rural Montana, acting in plays was an escape from bullies, who targeted her for being “verbose and goofy.” The idea came from her father, a Native man of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, whom she describes as “a bit of a wizard” and “had me convinced when I was younger that he was able to move clouds.”
“My dad saw early on when I was onstage that I just thrived,” Gladstone says. “When I was nine, it was the worst of it.

When the call went out for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Cara Jade Myers first read for the part of Rita and then for her sister Mollie, the focus of the film. Finally, she auditioned for the third sister, Anna, who is the most independent and the most troubled, her mother’s favorite but also a hard-drinking partier.
“She was almost larger than life in that character, with a bravery and an unpredictable quality,” says Rene Haynes, who was the film’s Indigenous casting director. “She’s also smart and can think on her feet.”
(Haynes says Zoom bombing a meeting with Myers and her manager to tell her she’d landed the role was “one of the most moving moments of my career,” while Myers says she wishes she’d recorded it. “I just started smiling and sobbing — it was probably the most ugly cry.”)

In Martin Scorsese's stirring drama "Killers of the Flower Moon," the legendary "Taxi Driver" star plays the sinister and scheming King Willam Hale, who has been unfolding a plot to take land and money from the people of the Osage nation by marrying wealthy members of the community and methodically killing them off. Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-contender “Killers of the Flower Moon” (AppleTV+) went through many iterations on its way to the big screen. Scorsese and his co-writer, Oscar-winner Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”), made several dramatic pivots on their way to a final script.
Even author David Grann, who wrote the 2017 non-fiction bestseller on which the book is based, when over half a decade he was obsessively researching the mysterious Osage killings in Oklahoma in the 1920s, had to start over when he discovered facts that changed his version of history. He had thought that the character William K. Hale, played by Robert De Niro in the movie, was the primary leader and evil villain of the piece. But as he dug into the Osage guardianship system in a vast archive warehouse in Fort Worth, Texas, he uncovered something different.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

Killers of the Flower Moon: Paul Schrader says DiCaprio should have played the cop and not the idiot
Paul Schrader, the writer behind Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Bringing Out the Dead, has something he’d like to get off his chest about Scorsese’s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon. Speaking with France’s Le Monde, Schrader says he would have approached the lengthy epic differently, especially regarding casting. While Schrader thinks Killers of the Flower Moon is a “good movie,” he thinks Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent investigating the Osage murders. This part eventually went to Jesse Plemons.

Paul Schrader has a casting quibble with the latest Martin Scorsese picture.
It’s by now the stuff of “Killers of the Flower Moon” lore that Jesse Plemons and Leonardo DiCaprio eventually swapped roles for Scorsese’s epic about the systemic killing of Osage people in 1920s Oklahoma. Plemons plays Bureau of Investigation agent Thomas Bruce White Sr., who shows up in the film’s last third, while DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, a dimwitted pawn in the murders and the husband of Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone). Eric Roth originally wrote the role of White for DiCaprio, who instead pushed to play Ernest, nephew of the film’s primary villain, William King Hale (Robert De Niro).
In a recent interview in Le Monde, ever-candid “First Reformed” director and “Taxi Driver” screenwriter Schrader said he would’ve preferred the casting’s original configuration. “Marty compares me to a Flemish miniaturist. He would...

Paul Schrader wrote Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” and it appears he would’ve handled things differently had he been the one to pen “Killers of the Flower Moon.” In a recent interview with France’s Le Monde, Schrader called “Flower Moon” a “good movie” but one that could’ve been better had DiCaprio been playing the FBI agent investigating the Osage murders.

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

From angry confrontations to romantic reunions, Guardian writers pick the big-screen moments that have stayed with them the most
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is frequently enthralling over the course of its three-and-a-half-hour runtime, sinking into the depths of American shame as it follows William Hale (Robert De Niro) and his unofficial lieutenant Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) as they grasp for the money and land controlled by the Osage tribe in 1920s Oklahoma, which involves slowly poisoning Ernest’s wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone) as they kill off members of her family and community. Lily Gladstone wanted to honour Mollie Burkhart's family with her performance in 'Killers of the Flower Moon'.The 37-year-old actress plays Mollie, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese's epic and explained how she placed lots of value on the opinion of her character's granddaughter Margie.Lily told Deadline: "The person whose opinion I valued most at the end of the day was always going to be Margie Burkhart, who was Mollie's granddaughter and Cowboy's daughter. Margie had never met her grandmother – Mollie passed away in 1936 – but she had pieced together her sense of who Mollie would've been from little stories from her dad, but not many."So, when we were meeting with Margie, I knew that she wasn't going to hand me a list of, 'This is Mollie and how to play her.' There was no blueprint, but where you find that is the legacy they leave within their family.

With early snowfall in parts of the country and the forecast of a possible El Niño pattern, all signs are pointing to a vibrant winter on the slopes. “Ski season is revving up, and like most of the past busy seasons, we are seeing high bookings and low availability already,” Tiffany Layne, CEO of Lavon Private Luxury tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Thanks to the Ikon and Epic season passes, members will discover even more perks this year. “These large passes continue to find ways to add value and make skiing more approachable for their members,” says Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder and CEO of Indagare, the members-only luxury travel company. “That means updated lifts in many ski areas, new terrain, Michelin-awarded restaurants and enhanced mobile apps.”
Here’s the latest on what’s new in Colorado, Utah, Idaho and elsewhere in the mountain west, as well as international destinations in Europe and Japan.

If it seems like Lily Gladstone is winning Best Actress prizes for her acclaimed performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” multiple times per week, that’s because it’s true. Since the New York Film Critics Circle announced Gladstone as the group’s Best Actress prizewinner on November 30, the 37-year-old star has been awarded Best Actress by the National Board of Review, Boston Society of Film Critics, and Chicago Film Critics Association, and earned Best Actress nominations from the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.

It’s been a little bit rapid-fire this last week, so I kind of have been joking that I get this news and I intellectualize it and I know it’s going to be waiting down...
