Stumptown Season 2 may have been officially on ABC’s fall schedule, but, in a shocking turn of events, it appears that the network has reneged on its renewal, due to coronavirus concerns.
ABC has retroactively canceled freshman crime series Stumptown months after its May renewal for a second season. The news, which arrives via Deadline, proves that the show’s Season 2 prospects were short-lived, thanks to the pandemic, which delayed the Portland-set show’s start in its production home of Los Angeles. Consequently, with the aforementioned renewal having hinged on the now-impossible notion of the series being ready to air in the fall to help kick off ABC’s 2020-2021 season, Covid-caused circumstances have ended its ABC run altogether. However, the subsidiary studio behind the show, ABC Signature, will shop the series around, meaning that Stumptown Season 2 could eventually manifest on another network or even a streaming platform.

And, another one bites the dust.
Despite a renewal and even getting mentioned in the ABC Fall 2020 slate of programming last June, ABC has swung the ax on Stumptown.
Heavy is the heart that watches broadcast TV in 2020.
Stumptown wasn't a ratings heavy hitter, but the quirky premise and star appeal of lead Cobie Smulders ensured a healthy audience.
The story follows Dex Parios (Smulders), a veteran who has seen better days.
She began pretty down on her luck but with a trusted group of friends who had her back.
As the season progressed, Dex earned her Private Investigator stripes by taclking difficult cases and putting her trust into mentors.
It didn't always work out, but we still loved watching her.
Other stars include Jake Johnson, Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus, Adrian Martinez, with Camryn Manheim and Michael Ealy, all playing characters with a vested interest in Dex.

“Stumptown” has been canceled by ABC after one season due to Covid-related circumstances, TheWrap has learned.
The Cobie Smulders-led drama was picked up for a second season in May, but on Wednesday the network was forced to reverse its decision due to scheduling concerns, according to an individual familiar with the matter. The studio behind the series, ABC Signature, will shop the show to other outlets.
The decision comes as the network’s fall schedule begins to take shape. Initially announced back in May with a scripted-heavy slate — including the planned second season of “Stumptown” — ABC has since shifted the schedule around as its various series have begun to return to production in recent weeks. Several of the unscripted and comedy series that have been able to resume filming have received premiere dates across the coming weeks, but none of the network’s dramas have yet been slated.

Studio ABC Signature will be shopping the series to other outlets.

Exclusive Updated: This will come as a shocker to Stumptown fans. The breakout series starring Cobie Smulders, which was renewed for a second season in May, will not be going forward with the Season 2 order. The studio behind the show, ABC Signature, plans to shop it and find a new home for it, I hear.
Stumptown was part of the fall 2020 ABC schedule announced in June, slated to return to the Wednesday 10 Pm slot it occupied last season. According to sources, a timing issue related to the production start delay made it impossible for the show to be ready for a fall launch when the network had scheduling needs for the 2020-21 season. As a result, the network made a decision to not move forward with the previously commissioned new season.

ABC, the last network to make pickup decisions on its new fall series, has given back orders to comedy Mixed-ish and drama Stumptown. Additionally, the network has ordered additional episodes of sophomore drama The Rookie, which had a 13-episode pickup.
I hear the Black-ish prequel has received an order for nine additional episodes for a full-season 22-episode run. Things are still in flux for dramas Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders and The Rookie starring Nathan Fillion. They are expected to produce at least five additional episodes each for a total of 18, and could deliver 1-2 extra episodes beyond that. Like it is the case with a number of stars these days, I hear Smulders’ deal caps the Stumptown seasons at 18 episodes, though ABC brass would like to get more. I hear The Rookie‘s order could get up to 20 episodes, matching Season 1.

ABC has given full-season pickups to its new fall comedies “Mixed-ish” and “Stumptown,” as well as the sophomore drama “The Rookie,” the network announced on Monday.
That marks full-season orders for two of the three new shows that ABC debuted this fall, leaving only the sci-fi thriller “Emergence” awaiting word of its fate from the network. Meanwhile, “The Rookie,” which was renewed for a 13-episode second season back in May, now has been picked up for a full season.
“This fall, ‘Stumptown’ has delivered a rich, inventive and fun thrill ride each week with a stellar cast that features one of the most fearless female characters at the center; ‘mixed-ish’ has established itself as one of the sharpest, funniest and most original new comedies of the season; and ‘The Rookie’ has continued to bring compelling storytelling and powerful performances to its passionate and loyal fan base,” ABC boss Karey Burke said in a statement.

[Editor’s Note: The following review is more of a first impression, as the only episode available for advance screening was the pilot. For new broadcast series that warrant a deeper look, check IndieWire for a more thorough analysis in the coming weeks.]
“Stumptown” knows how to start a show. Yes, the actual start of the show is two petty criminals discussing the finer points of Portland slow roast. And yes, that gives way to private investigator Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) besting said criminals with a fire extinguisher and her two bare hands. But what follows that easily anticipated intro, both in the briskly paced cold open and in the first episode beyond, is a more-than-sturdy foundation for a fresh spin on the network detective series.
To the extent that “Stumptown” feels the need to tick the expected items off a checklist, it does so with incredible efficiency. The opening episode — titled “Forget it Dex, It’s Stumptown.” — proves Dex’s skills at her chosen job, sets up her military background as a way to explain the lingering physical and psychological effects, and even manages to make room for a casual hookup in between evidence gathering.

The cast and producing team of ABC’s forthcoming adaptation of Greg Rucka’s graphic novel Stumptown took the dais at TCA to talk about the new series that is more than just a procedural action-drama. There’s a lot of secrets folded into the lives of the complex characters.
The whole Stumptown gang was there for TCA: Actors Cobie Smulders, Michael Ealy, Tantoo Cardinal, Adrian Martinez, Cole Sibus, Jake Johnson and Camryn Manheim were joined by show creator Jason Richman alongside fellow executive producers David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer to unpack the anatomy of the show and its different take on the genre.

Greg Rucka’s graphic novel Stumptown is headed to ABC – but there are no heroes in capes or tights, villains who are plotting to take over the world, magic, mutants or out-of-this-world powers. It’s about a mortal woman named Dex Parios, a marine veteran who is just living her life. But don’t get it twisted — it very much has the grit of a graphic novel. And a very inclusive one at that.
After showing Smulders kick butt in the high-flying cold open of the pilot, producers Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad and Rucka were joined on stage by cast members Cobie Smulders, Jake Johnson, Michael Ealy, Camryn Manheim, Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus and Adrian Martinez to talk about the new series.
