Rob Smith(LXXXIX)
- Director

I was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa with a love for filmmaking, Formula 1, comedy and music. I love dogs, hate heights, and spent half my childhood dressed up as a pirate.
I have been making short films since I was 14 years old, and have since been enchanted by the entire process of making movies.
After school I studied directing and scriptwriting at AFDA for 3 years, where I was top of my class.
After studying I worked at Velocity Films (then Africa's biggest production company), where I worked under Keith Rose. This internationally acclaimed director mentored me and helped develop my attention to detail and passion for perfection.
Over the past 10 years I have mainly directed commercials and documentaries in South Africa, but narrative filmmaking is where my true passion lies, as seen in my short films and music videos.
I have won a Cannes Lion, a One Show and many international awards for clients such as Johnnie Walker, ESPN, Carling, and Virgin. My short films have been selected for multiple international film festivals, including Aesthetica and KinoFilm.
I am naturally drawn to comedy. Even when creating a film primarily based in another genre, I'll always find a way to infuse my own offbeat humour, as I believe it opens up the viewer to feel more.
Having moved from South Africa to the UK in 2022, I am embracing a new chapter in my life, focused on my love for narrative filmmaking.
