New Delhi, July 25 (Ians) One of Independent India’s biggest and most monumental milestones, the hard-fought victory in the Kargil War, is celebrated each year on July 26 as the ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’.It is an occasion for us to look back at the films inspired by the war, the most recent one being the hit 2021 movie ‘Shershaah’, starring Sidharth Malhotra, playing the martyred war hero, Captain Vikram Batra, and Kiara Advani.
Each of these movies adopted a different approach, some took a more realistic and grounded approach, other stuck to the traditional cinematic route, but each mixed together a bunch of elements, from emotions to dance, drama, romance, war action, and, above all, patriotism and national pride.
‘Shershaah’, a pandemic-era multiple award-winning biographical film on Amazon Prime Video, tells the story of Captain Vikram Batra from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, who was given the codename Shershaah by his superiors...

Gulmohar (Disney+Hotstar)
Directed by Rahul V Chittella
Rahul V Chittella has worked extensively with Mira Nair. It shows in his debut film. Gulmohar is like Mira’s Monsoon Wedding without a wedding, or for that matter, even a semblance monsoonal bliss.
There is a peculiar sterility and joylessness about the characters, scattered and rudderless even as they speak repeatedly about keeping the family together, they seem to have little interest in actually sharing the same roof.
Chittella and his co-writer Arpita Mukherjee spread out the plot onto a wafer-thin canvas. For such a tediously skimpy scenario to come alive, one needed a more dedicated storytelling and performances. Tragically the actors seldom get a chance to have a say, let alone cohere in a familial clasp.
This family doesn’t believe in group hugs. The matriarch Kusum Batra(Sharmila Tagore) makes much out of keeping the family together. But she...

After some of its officials were arrested in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam, the Ioa plunged into internal conflict and when elections were finally conducted in December 2012, Abhay Singh Chautala and Lalit Kumar Bhanot were elected as president and secretary general respectively.
As both of them faced court cases and charges of alleged corruption, the Ioc considered their election as a violation of the Olympic Charter and suspended the National Olympic Committee of India (Noc) from all Olympics-related activities.
This meant that India could not organise any international competition in the country and its sportspersons were not allowed to participate in international events under the national flag. Accordingly, the Indian representatives at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia participated under the Ioc flag.

Putting her 2022 Commonwealth Games ‘horror show’ behind, Manika has performed well in the last few tournaments and looks all set for a superb season ahead. On Tuesday, she reached her career-best 33rd position in the International Table Tennis Federation (Ittf) women’s singles world rankings, which came after her brilliant semi-final run at the Wtt Contender Doha.
Prior to that, the 27-year old claimed a historic bronze medal for India at the Asian Cup in Bangkok in November. However, before this superb show, Manika had a very tough last year, in which she made the semi-final of just one event and quarter-finals of two tournaments, including the Commonwealth Games 2022.
