Michael Fernandez(IX)
- Cinematographer
Michael "Cambio" Fernandez is an LA-based cinematographer whose most known work includes Sing J Lee's The Accidental Getaway Driver, which premiered at Sundance in 2023; Walter Thompson-Hernandez's If I Go Will They Miss Me, the winner of Sundance's Grand Jury Prize in 2022; and Beyonce's 2022 Black Is King.
Fernandez grew up in the heart of California's working class, agricultural Central Valley. His love for storytelling and filmmaking was sparked by watching movies with his mother and five brothers, and though his route to film work was untraditional - he got a master's degree in history and taught high school for 10 years - his love for cinematography was real and his talent promising.
Fernandez was still teaching when he shot his first breakout feature film, The Burial of Kojo, which was directed by Blitz Bazawule and described by the New York Times as "a dazzling modern fable."
In 2019, Fernandez signed with Iconic Talent Agency, where he has since shot various commercials, music videos and films around the world. He earned his Union Card as a Director of Photography for Local 600 Hollywood, and was recognized by the ASC and its membership as a rising star in 2022.
Other notable credits include Bardo, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and R&B artist Leon Bridges' "Live From Gold-Diggers Hotel Album Film", directed by Natalie Rae. Fernandez has also worked with famed director Guillermo Del Toro. Fernandez recently shot Joshua Kissi's 2022 Amazon Music documentary For Love & Country, spotlighting Black country music singers and recently served as 2nd Unit DP on Ava DuVerney's upcoming feature Caste.
Fernandez's commercial credits include Nike, Jordan, Beats By Dre, Lululemon, Vogue, Google, NY Times, Facebook, LA 2028 Olympics, Nissan, NASA, Ronald McDonald House Charities, SK-II, Amazon, Motel 6, Pepsi, Corona, CVS, Fox Promo, Clippers Fan Film, Gymshark, Indeed, Jersey Mikes, Walmart, and McDonald's Wedding Stories, which was a Vimeo Staff Pick.
Fernandez has also shot music videos for The Killers and Rich Brian.
