The cast for the new movie includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sam Worthington, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Úrsula Corberó.
In our review of the new Kevin Hart movie, we actually gave the Mvp award to the soundtrack (Andrew specifically referred to the needle drops). As a result, we’ve eagerly compiled the full list of tracks, whether from the soundtrack or the original soundtrack from its composers.

Having premiered in Sundance, “Jamojaya” focuses on a topic that has been repeatedly dealt with both in music and sports films, regarding the corruption of the industries and how they can swallow talented youths whole when left unprotected, and at the same time, how the people around the talents, as in the case of their family members, occasionally can hamper their future with their meddling. Justin Chon implements these topics as his base, adding though, an Indonesian flavor through the roots of the two protagonists, while commenting on the generational and cultural gap between a father and a son who suffer from the same trauma, but in rather different ways.
“Jamojaya” is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival Spring Showcase
James is an aspiring Indonesian rapper, who had some minor success in his country and is now at a resort in Hawai'i to produce his first album for a major US record label.

Jamojaya takes its name after a legend: As relayed in an animated sequence narrated by Joyo (Yayu A.W. Unru), Jamojaya was a prince transformed against his will into a banyan tree. In an act of love, his brother turns himself into a bird to look for him. But their inability to communicate keeps a proper reunion forever out of reach — the bird unable to recognize his brother’s new form, the tree unable to reveal himself even when his brother stands in his branches.
It’s a story Joyo adores so much he’s named his two sons after it: James (Brian Imanuel), now an up-and-coming rapper, and Jaya, who died years ago in a plane crash. And its sense of searching permeates the entire picture, to mostly moving, occasionally frustrating effect.

There is no shortage of stories about fathers and their kids, specifically sons. But in Justin Chon’s film, “Jamojaya,” the relationship becomes bogged down with the added aspect of career and ambition. There’s the duty that a father feels toward his son and a son’s desire to take care of himself and fly away from his father. But amidst all that, the relationship that drives the story can become a bit muddled in the imagery and silences in the film at times.

Up-and-coming Indonesian rapper James (Brian Imanuel) has taken a major professional leap signing with an international label. But just as the music execs are eager to take his music global, they demand he dilute his cultural identity to appeal to industry trends in the West. Yet “Jamojaya” –the new feature from director Justin Chon, premiering at Sundance — is only partially about James’ tug of war with the greedy forces impatient to exploit him. A familial fissure haunts him as well.
The rising star has chosen to part ways professionally with his father and now former manager Joyo (Yayu A.W. Unru), a decision the latter hasn’t taken well. Under pressure to record his album in Hawaii, James initially welcomes his dad’s presence during an unexpected visit. The more time they spent together, however, the more toxic their exchanges turn.

The broad strokes of Indonesian rapper Brian Imanuel’s improbable life serve as the framework for his big-screen debut in director Justin Chon’s coming-of-age drama Jamojaya, premiering Jan. 23 in Park City. Imanuel, better known to global hip-hop fans by his stage name, Rich Brian, gives a convincing performance in the film as a fish-out-of-water musical sensation very much like his real-life self.
Born to a middle-class family in West Jakarta, Imanuel was home-schooled and taught himself English by watching YouTube videos and listening to American rappers. After experimenting with various forms of internet content creation, Imanuel began recording hip-hop at age 15 as “Rich Chigga” (a name he later said was invented out of naivete, prompting the change to “Rich Brian” after he was criticized for mocking hip-hop culture and his use of the N-word in song). He quickly became a global sensation after the video for his debut single,...

Before Covid upended the film festival scene, Sundance premieres were a hotbed of drama as studio chiefs and streaming executives staked out the best seats in the theater and then beat a path for the exits as soon as the credits rolled in the hopes of outmaneuvering each other for the hottest films. After two years of going virtual, Sundance is back in-person. However, it’s unclear if the all-night bidding wars that were such a staple of past festivals will also return in force. At a time of cost-cutting and box office struggles for indie movies, a new era of fiscal restraint may be the order of the day.
But Sundance’s thin mountain air could cause all that economizing to evaporate. And if it does, here are 13 films that could have buyers writing big checks.

Luca Guadagnino has set himself quite an ensemble for his next film with Zendaya set and Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in final negotiation to star in Challengers. MGM recently acquired rights to the package with Amy Pascal, Guadagnino, Zendaya and Rachel O’Connor of Pascal Pictures producing. Justin Kuritzkes penned the script.
The story follows Tashi, a tennis player-turned-coach who has taken her husband, Art, and transformed him from a mediocre player into a world-famous Grand Slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a “Challenger” event — close to the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour — where he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick: his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.
While the project is eyeing a March start, the package has been coming together since late last year, with the ever-busy Guadagnino...

Hollywood-based Chinese film financier Peter Luo and Oscar-winning producer Donna Gigliotti (“Shakespeare in Love”) have boarded upcoming female-led Syrian war drama “Nezouh,” directed by Soudade Kaadan, whose debut “The Day I Lost My Shadow” won the 2018 Venice Film Festival’s Lion of the Future.
“Nezouh,” which is Kaadan’s followup to “Shadow,” is set against the backdrop of the Syrian conflict in Damascus where a young woman named Zena and her family reside in a zone that is about to be bombed. Her father takes the firm stance to stay home. With little time left, Zena and her mother Hara face a very tough decision.
Kaadan’s new film was shot in Turkey, produced by Kaadan, Yu-Fai Suen, and Marc Bordure (“Gloria Mundi”), and lensed by ace French cinematographer Hélène Louvart.

Exclusive: Details are emerging about Justin Chon’s (Blue Bayou) under-the-radar music drama Jamojaya, starring rapper Rich Brian. Recently wrapped in Hawaii, the film’s producing team includes Peter Luo (Crazy Rich Asians) and former Columbia/TriStar head Chris Lee.
Chon wrote, directed, and produced the English-language feature, which sees rising Indonesian rapper Brian make his acting debut.
Chon, whose Blue Bayou recently debuted at Cannes, has previously said the project is a “break-up story” of a father and son. The film charts the fallout after the son, whose career as a rapper is about to take off, hires a U.S manager and label to take over his career from his father who has steered it to date.
LA-based Stars Collective financed and is co-producing the project, which in addition to Chon, is produced by Alan Pao (Under The Silver Lake) and executive-produced by Chris Lee (Superman Returns), Peter...

One is likely to have many thoughts flit through their head while watching Marvel’s latest epic origin story Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. “Wow, Tony Leung really is handsome.” “I didn’t realize [Redacted] was going to be in this!” But chief among those thoughts is sure to be: “Am I crazy, or does this soundtrack slap?”
Well dear, reader, you are not crazy. The soundtrack for Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings does, in fact, slap. Marvel apparently agrees as it was sure to release the 18-track album the moment the film premiered in theaters on September 3. The soundtrack is available now. You can check out the full tracklist via Spotify below.
Marvel is fairly conservative about which soundtracks of its films it chooses to hype up. While just about every Marvel film receives one, it’s really only James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy...

As women and girls continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV and AIDS, a galaxy of brands and stars are once again stepping out for the annual World AIDS Day Campaign, the (Red) Shopathon, to raise money and bring urgency to the AIDS fight.
Ahead of the Global Fund to fight AIDS’ mobilization of countries to finance the fight for the next three years, (Red) is mobilizing companies and their customers, and celebrities and their fans, to generate millions and give people everywhere countless ways to get involved.

Nobody in the crowd at 88rising’s early October show in New York City, an unapologetic riot on the brand-new open-air rooftop at Pier 17, is confused about where they are and what they’re doing there — except the security staff, who wander around most of the night in abject confusion. A few of them watch the whole concert from the edges, looking lost; one, when I ask for directions to the elevator, asks me in return to fill him in about what’s going on.
The audience suffers no such bewilderment.

The streaming age has – happily – broadened hip-hop’s boundaries, allowing U.S. and English-speaking listeners to easily discover how other cultures have put their own spin on the genre. The New York-centered collective 88rising is representative of hip-hop’s ascendant globalism: It includes acts from Indonesia (rapper Rich Brian and R&B singer Niki), Japan (R&B singer Joji), China (the rap/pop group Higher Brothers) and South Korea (rapper Keith Ape), as well as L.A. artist August 08. The crew’s debut echoes of-the-moment sounds, particularly on the thumping trap of Higher Brothers,...

One of modern country’s greatest songwriters, the author of Tim McGraw’s winning “Humble & Kind” echoes its themes here, musing on verities of family and community with matter-of-factly hard-earned, time-ripened wisdom. The craft is remarkable and deceptively understated, with fine-turned phrases glinting like dewdrops. Highlight: “The Lot Behind St. Mary’s,” a song about getting busy in blue jeans while in the literal (and figurative) shadow of the local church. Parlor game: Guessing which songs will get remade by mainstreamers wanting an artistic upgrade.
