Artemis Fowl on Disney+ is just one in a long line of films to change the race of supporting characters while preserving the ‘white hero’ trope
Mainstream family entertainment has made progress when it comes to representation of non-white people, and Disney+’s lavish new fantasy Artemis Fowl ticks a lot of the right boxes, at least on paper. But some conversations still need to be had. Especially when it comes to taking white-centric stories and simply swapping out a few supporting characters while preserving the white, usually male, leader at the centre.
Artemis Fowl is a sort of high-tech Harry Potter, adapted from the bestselling books by Irish author Eoin Colfer and directed by Kenneth Branagh. Its hero is a boy genius (newcomer Ferdia Shaw) with inherited wealth and a smug sense of superiority. Assisting Fowl on his adventure to find his missing father is his “friend, mentor and bodyguard” Domovoi Butler.

Based on the series of young-adult novels by Eoin Colfer, Artemis Fowl landed in the nest that is Disney Plus recently, and has garnered a very-mixed, often negative response from fans and critics alike in the small time it’s been available. I, then, tried to avoid these reviews so I could sit down and watch it with an open mind, as I try to do with every film I see.
With the horrendous virus causing the world to go into lockdown, we’ve had a few months of not-too-many new movies coming out, especially bigger blockbusters. Sure, we’ve seen some release digitally or on streaming platforms, but they’ve been few and far between. Artemis Fowl, then, is something that may appeal to those who...

For starters, it’s no Harry Potter. But when Aretmis Fowl debuts on Disney + on June 12th, you’ll wonder why this fussed-over and broken film version of Irish author Eoin Colfer’s young-adult bestseller — about a 12-year-old criminal mastermind — had to be this dramatically inert and emotionally barren. Colfer once described his fantasy series of eight Artemis novels as “Die Hard with fairies.” If only. What’s on screen comes up short on excitement despite the presence of some heady talent at the helm. That’s Belfast’s Sir Kenneth Branagh directing,...

I’m sure there must be some appeal to the Artemis Fowl book series that serves as the basis for this film adaptation of the same name. However, whatever might be there is certainly not translated to the movie. Artemis Fowl is something both bizarre and bland, boring while also being deeply strange. What could have been a fun and somewhat different kind of blockbuster for kids is instead just a big ugly mess. Pulled from a handful of different dates on the calendar over the last two years, it’s now being dumped on Disney Plus tomorrow, saving it from the box office failure that was undoubtedly in its future. The movie is a fantasy adventure, based on two of the first books in the Artemis Fowl franchise. I’ll keep the synopsis brief, since it frankly doesn’t make any sense, anyhow. Here, we’re introduced to Artemis...

“Artemis Fowl” was supposed to be Disney’s “Harry Potter,” the kick-off installment in a young-adult fantasy franchise that might have spawned sequels and merch and its own corner of the company’s theme-park kingdom. Instead, it arrives 20 years on, a very late addition to an already overcrowded genre, adding little but noise, garish CGI and more convoluted mythology about the supposedly real civilizations of magical folk — fairies and goblins and trolls — that live among us. Better films have tried and failed to launch hit series, which suggests that “Artemis Fowl” should have taken a lesson from such unwieldy one-offs as “The Golden Compass,” “Ender’s Game” and “The Last Airbender”: Don’t count your chickens before they’ve flopped.
First optioned in 2000, “Artemis Fowl” was finally shot in 2018 and delayed multiple times before being dumped onto the Disney Plus streaming service (by a studio with bigger franchises to focus...

Like a fairy trapped in a cage, there’s a different movie trapped inside “Artemis Fowl,” struggling to break free of the more conventional trappings of the big, kids-oriented fantasy adventure story that premieres on June 12 on Disney+.
And by the way, there’s a real fairy trapped in a cage in “Artemis Fowl,” along with a whole lot of dwarves, goblins, elves, trolls, the occasional centaur and enough other magical creatures to make a lot of “Harry Potter” fans happy, along with scattered aficionados of, say, “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “His Dark Materials” and even “Star Wars.”
But while an energetic kids’ fantasy with cool creatures fighting each other is probably a reasonable win for Disney’s new premium service in these days before most theaters reopen, it’s hard to watch it as an adult and not wish for something that produced a little more magic of its own.

Originally destined to be a tentpole theatrical release in May, Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of the much loved Eoin Colfer books instead premieres as a Disney+ exclusive. It’s a shame in a way, since Branagh’s movie is colorful, kinetic, and highly cinematic with several rollicking set pieces and some Harry Potter-level world building.
On the other hand, the streaming release does at least save fans of the books feeling cheated out of the price of a cinema ticket and a bucket of popcorn as well as a morally ambiguous and frequently ruthless main character. As many predicted, the least interesting thing about Artemis Fowl is Artemis himself.
A 12-year-old genius and criminal mastermind, Fowl Jr. played by newcomer Ferdia Shaw, is the son of wealthy Irish businessman Artemis Fowl Sr. (Colin Farrell). The elder Fowl has been accused of stealing various priceless items from museums including the Rosetta...

Sometimes no matter how hard you try, it comes a time to admit to yourself that you really might not be the intended demographic for the movie you’re watching. This moment came for me about 20 minutes into Disney Plus’ latest feature length offering, Artemis Fowl when I realised that I had absolutely no idea who anyone in the story was or why I should care about any of them.
Based on the popular Ya fantasy series by Eoin Colfer and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the film stars newcomer Ferdia Shaw in the titular role and tells the story of a young criminal prodigy, on the hunt for a secret society of fairies.
When his father, the suspected international criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl Sr (Colin Farrell) disappears without trace, 12 year old Artemis junior (Shaw) vows to find his father and bring him back home whatever it takes. Aided by his...

For every “Twilight,” there is a “Divergent.” For every “Resident Evil,” there is a “Warcraft.” And for every “Harry Potter,” there are a number of movies just like “Artemis Fowl.” Disney’s adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s popular Ya series has been mired in development hell for nearly two decades, first cycling through producers and directors, only to weather an association with Harvey Weinstein, face a series of delayed release dates, and finally end up on the Mouse House’s streaming service in the middle of a pandemic.
Starring newcomer Ferdia Shaw (who lacks both the charisma and skills to carry an entire feature film) as the eponymous Artemis, the film opens long after the events we’re about to see play out have ended, the first indication that everything that follows is going to be far more convoluted than necessary. The Artemis Fowl movie was supposed to hit theaters at the end of May. But with the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to impact movie theaters, Disney has decided to premiere the film on their Disney+ streaming service. Since the first trailers came out, reaction from fans has been mixed. (Some have expressed their dismay by saying that now they understand how Percy Jackson fans felt about their film adaptation—something Disney+ hopes to remedy with their upcoming Percy Jackson series.)
The reason fans are so torn by the trailer is that the Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) introduced is a fresh-faced, naive child who discovers the fairy world after his father, a “collector” of stolen artifacts, goes missing. He gets an explanation from his bodyguard Butler (Nonso Anozie) that his father was actually part of a group trying to keep dangerous magical artifacts from harming mankind.

Here’s how June is supposed to work, entertainment-wise: multiplexes fill up with big, loud, expensive movies, and television scales back ambition in favor of low-risk, low-impact programming. But in 2020’s upside-down world of closed theaters and social distancing, the old rules don’t apply. Sure, you can tune into the Watt brothers playing an elaborate version of tag. But you can also watch: a potentially franchise-launching adaptation of a popular Ya series on a streaming service; a documentary on Bruce Lee; new movies from Spike Lee and Judd Apatow...

"Your mission – is to steal it." Disney has released one more official trailer for the long-awaited Artemis Fowl movie, an epic adaptation of the fantasy book series by Eoin Colfer. This trailer confirms that the movie will be available streaming on Disney+ on June 12th, skipping theaters entirely (due to the pandemic shutdown). The story follows a 12-year-old mastermind named Artemis Fowl, who discovers a world below ground of armed and dangerous--and extremely high-tech--fairies. He kidnaps one of them, Holly Short, and holds her for ransom in an effort to restore his family's fortune and find his father. Ferdia Shaw stars as Artemis, and the full cast includes Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Nonso Anozie, Tamara Smart, Miranda Raison, Joshua McGuire, and Hong Chau. This looks like it might be an entertaining adventure, probably best they're dropping it online right away. Family-time fun. Here's the...

Earlier this month, Disney made the official announcement that Artemis Fowl, the feature film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling middle grade novel, would be debuting on Disney+ rather than in theaters. Now, we have a release date…
Artemis Fowl will hit Disney+ on June 12th, which is not so different from its planned May 29th cinema release date. For the uninitiated, Artemis Fowl is the story of 12-year-old genius, um, Artemis Fowl, who descends from a long and proud line of criminal masterminds. When Artemis’ father goes missing, the young Fowl finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning with a powerful race of fairies, who have kept themselves largely hidden from the human world.
The 2001 book would launch an eight-installment series, so should the film do well (and the Covid-19 pandemic ever end), there is much more material to adapt to future film installments, should Disney want to—though,...

Disney set the streaming-only premiere date for live-action sci-fi fantasy “Artemis Fowl” on its Disney Plus service worldwide — hoping it gives more juice to the subscription VOD product while theaters are shuttered.
“Artemis Fowl,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, will be available exclusively on Disney Plus beginning Friday, June 12. It had originally been set for a May 29 theatrical debut.
Based on the best-selling Ya book by Irish author Eoin Colfer, “Artemis Fowl” follows the journey of a 12-year-old criminal mastermind as he desperately tries to save his kidnapped father. Artemis must infiltrate an ancient, underground civilization of fairies — and track down the Aculos, the fairies’ most powerful and coveted magical device, to pay the ransom.
In a statement, Branagh said that Artemis Fowl would “be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney Plus.”

Artemis Fowl is the latest Hollywood film to have its planned rollout changed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Disney announced today that the adaptation based on the bestselling Eoin Colfer kids fantasy series would be happening not in cinemas, as planned, but on Disney+. The film was set to be released in theaters on May 29th. As of this writing, there was no date for the Disney+ release, but I would imagine it will be sooner rather than later.
We really are living in a new age of movie distribution. Perhaps we were already heading towards more direct-to-streaming big-budget releases, but, if that is true, the “social distancing” restrictions put on all of us in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic has certainly moved up the timetable: Hollywood blockbusters are now debuting not in cinemas, but on subscription streaming services.

With movie theaters closed to hopefully no later than early June, the major studios have a permission slip to test out big pic releases in the home. Now, they’re not so insane that they’ll burn down the house to keep warm. Major movies like Disney’s Mulan and Black Widow which have the potential to do $1 billion at the global box office, thus triggering off a downstream of ancillary riches, aren’t the types of movies you’d debut in the home.
However, in the roll-of-the-die, Dreamworks Animation/Universal’s Trolls World Tour and now Disney’s former post Memorial Day weekend release Artemis Fowl are worthy experiments given how studios’ hands are currently tied in the current frozen theatrical marketplace. Disney will announce the release date for Artemis Fowl sometime in the near future for its streaming service.

Disney’s “Artemis Fowl” will forgo a theatrical release and will instead launch on Disney Plus. The sci-fi fantasy was scheduled to open on May 29, but the coronavirus pandemic has led to the closure of most movie theaters.
Disney has overhauled the release dates for most of its upcoming films — shifting everything from “Captain Marvel 2” to “Indiana Jones 5” while it tries to game out how long the public health crisis will last.
“Artemis Fowl” had looked like a dicey commercial proposition. It was originally slated to open on Aug. 9, 2019, but its release was pushed back by a year even before the pandemic swept across the globe. However, its digital debut will likely draw attention to Disney Plus at a time when streaming services are surging in popularity. It gives Disney Plus a big-budget original offering.

Disney has pulled its upcoming adaption of “Artemis Fowl” from its theatrical release and will now debut the movie exclusively on its Disney+ streaming service.
The Kenneth Branagh-directed film was supposed to be released on May 29, during the summer blockbuster season (it had been earlier slated to hit theaters in August of last year before getting delayed). It is unclear when the film will become available on Disney+, but it will be sometime in the summer. On Friday, Pixar’s “Onward” became available on the platform, less than a month after it debuted at the box office and just a few weeks after it was available to buy on video-on-demand.

Eoin Colfer's beloved book gets a big screen adaptation but fans on social media are clamoring Artemis Fowl doesn't reflect the book's plot. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the 12-year-old criminal mastermind (Ferdia Shaw) searches for his missing father (Colin Farrell). However, the book's character is an anti-hero rather than a hero as portrayed in the new trailer. However the author has endorsed Disney's vision of the book.

The first trailer for Disney’s adaptation of the fantasy novel “Artemis Fowl” shows the young, boy genius and title character becoming a hero out on a mission to save his father, all while battling some trolls in nifty green sunglasses.
It’s a classic hero’s origin story and adventure film directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Colin Farrell, Josh Gad, Judi Dench and Ferdia Shaw as Artemis Fowl II.
But fans of the book series have had some mixed reactions to the trailer Monday morning, pointing out that in the first book of Eoin Colfer’s nine fantasy novels, Artemis Fowl is actually a villain who uses his criminal mastermind thievery and gadgets to kidnap a fairy princess and hold her for ransom, becoming an anti-hero you root for by the end of the story.

Last year, Disney‘s “Artemis Fowl” was scheduled to hit theaters August 9, 2019. That obviously changed and the movie—based on the beloved Ya fantasy novel by Eoin Colfer is now hitting theaters eight months later in May. That’s a pretty big push, but Disney has set a much more summer-friendly date for the film, so maybe reshoots or whatever the problem was, helped.

"Your father is in a complicated profession – for years, he has protected powerful secrets that have kept mankind safe..." Disney has unveiled a new full-length trailer for Artemis Fowl, an epic adaptation of the fantasy book series by Eoin Colfer. This was originally going to be released last summer, but Disney delayed it by almost an entire year. Now it's in opening in theaters this May with an upgrade - at least it looks a bit bigger and better.
